Federer for Wimbledon? Anyone?

Depends on Murray, Nadal to suck there for Federer to win :(

Federer Halle 2012 was better than Halle 2013....even though he won this year.

Federer not playing good enough yet....better than he was in Clay this year.

We will see....He is my pick though!

Once Mikhail finally came back down from all the lines he was hitting, the match was a done deal. Youzhny started to go for too much thinking he could continue to hit that way the entire match, and that was it.

At Wimbledon,Federer certainly needs play better in the return games. He played well in this match on serve, but if his return is not on par he might have to face a lot of tiebreakers.

There is just something magical about Federer on grass. I think he's looking for the 8th Wimbledon title to go for the record. If he wins, it would be truly epic considering the last 10 months or so.

Where do people rank Federer for Wimbledon in terms of who's the favourite and all that? I would say he's only 4th with the way he's been playing, but I guess you could make the argument for third favourite.

let him fly under the radar, remember last year? Nadal and Djoko going in a heavy faves, you saw what happened

Wow, looking at the last 2 matches, Federer has no chance at Wimbledon. He'll need a lucky draw just to make it to QF stage. Certainly no chance of beating Nadal.

Now Fed has at least 6 titles in Halle, Wimbledon and WTF, good reflection of his favourite surfaces, if he can get 6 at Cinci, Dubai and USO as well... :)

Yeah, lets pray that Rosol doesn't decide to play this year. We can't have him opening up a can of you-know-what every year.

I would agree with you if it`s clay. But on grass even if he is not playing well from the baseline he can always hang in there if his serve is working. And if he gets himself into tiebreakers he would like his chances vs Nadal. Also we don`t know yet how Nadal will play on grass and how well his serve is working.

Fourth, but we haven't seen Novak and Rafa on grass, so it's hard to call.

Sad stuff today even though Federer won. I don't think he has much of a chance at Wimbledon since he struggles against Mikhail Youzhny these days.

hahaha! LOL!

He's being serious too. The hate is strong in this one.

Fortunately the event happened so recently that I won't need to make a dedicated thread for this one, he'll still hunt me down anyway.

Rogers serve is looking good now.I seriously cant understand what happened to his FH in the space of 10 months?

Nadal lost to an unknown punk in that 250 event...and then had a long clay season to look better, Fed only has Wimby after this to do something but I trust the Eagle.

The only thing I worry about regarding Rosol is that Rosol will tank the round before he's due to meet Nadal (as he did at Roland Garros). Having a winning slam h2h over Nadal is a once in a lifetime opportunity. He won't want to look the gift horse in the mouth.

The only thing working for Nadal last year at Wimbledon was his serve. Nadal hit 23 aces vs Rosol. But, yeah you can be skeptical of his serve if you like.

Well, I'd rather Nadal didn't live in a hole with shame for another 7.5 months, if Rosol beats him again. This time, even 7.5 months probably won't be enough....Rosol tanking will at least help keep Rafa on the tour.

He would of thought of retirement if Novak defeated him at the French.

Nice avatar btw. :)

His whole ground game is off -- it's barely top-15 level at the moment.

Does anyone know if he's experimenting with a lower tension setup ?

This is a bit like asking "Nadal for RG, anyone?" ;)

Of course, there is actually some serious competition on grass, while there hasn't been any other top claycourter but Nadal since Gaudio and Coria went away in 2005, but still...

No it's not. Not even close to the same thing these days actually, regardless of "competition." If this was 2006 I'd agree with you, but not today. Besides, there was no competition on grass in 2006 either because Federer blew the doors off anyone like Nadal does on clay because they're that good.

Of course it is. A bit. Which is why I used a smiley, btw. But discounting a seven-time champion, winner of the last edition and winner of the most titles on grass since like forever is *exactly* like Clarky saying that Nadal has no chance at all of winning RG.

Not saying that he's going to win, nor that he's the favourite, but of course he has a chance. With diminishing returns each year now that age has caught up with him, but still, it was enough in 2012, so he's still in the running.

So, Federer for Wimbledon, anyone? Heck yeah. At least as much as Nadal, Djokovic, or Murray. Maybe even as much as some of them put together. ;)

(Oh, and I know it's fashionable to diss Roddick on these boards, but he and Hewitt were definitely serious contenders on grass half a dozen years ago. Had Roddick won in 2004 and 2009, it would have been totally deserved.)

Which is also why I said it's not even close to the same thing these days. And why I said I would've agreed with you if it was 2006, for example. I'm not discounting him at all, and I think Roddick and Hewitt were fine competition, I just don't think the two questions are anywhere close to being the same. Nadal is a massive favourite every year at RG only slightly questionable since 2011, but it's highly questionable whether Federer at his age is even the favourite at Wimbledon, let alone a huge one.

So Federer for Wimbledon? Sure, I could see it, but it's not a bit like Nadal at RG IMO. Anyway this is semantics and is not important at all.

Other examples - one of the defining points in the Wimbledon semis which further turned the tide in Roger's favour mentally occurred in a very long rally where Fed eventually won the point by drawing an error with a beautifully struck backhand dtl, where he redirected the pace beautifully. The only reason he was able to win this point is because his weaker stroke just wouldn't break down.

Same occurred against Murray in the final.

For Roger to win Wimbledon his only choice and chance is to make sure that his weaker stroke can't be adequately attacked.

I always thought federers backhand won him last years Wimbledon..those end of set 2 and set 3 exchanges that went on and on..

and federers so-called feeble backhand gets him out of jail plenty o times :)
