It's his 4th tournament back, he didn't damage his arm so his shots and finding his range were never going to be the issue long term. He's had 4 tournaments to find his groove for those. In his post match interview he seemed very confident with his movement. Good signs for him.

I think Del Potro's problem here was that he won the first set. He should've let Nadal win it, and then he could've taken the last two like he did against Murray and Djokovic.

Beating injured Federer, pigeon Berd, exhausted DelPo is an open draw. The only hot player he beat was Gulbis, cmon don't deny it.

If you start a match, you are fit to play. That is the rule. Injury can be a reason for a poor performance, but not an excuse to take away credit from the winner. Berdych beat Nadal in 3 of their first 4 matches, so wasn't always a "pigeon" of Nadal's. Both Gulbis and del Potro played very well indeed.

Clarky must be thrilled, I predict she will make him favorite in every match from now on

Oh my God, it will be hilarious to what what Clarky comes up with to dub Nadal as the bottom of the pile underdog for all upcoming events

This could be fun if Djokovic goes on another run against him, purely because this win has removed all excuses ;) To be honest though more likely Novak goes off the boil and Nadal grabs number one again. Shame the 2 won't meet til clay, then it'll be 23-14 H2H

Im happy for nadal and he truely deserved it but come on he basically had 1-2 tough matches.

Berdych- is forever his pet
Federer- bad back (he barely even retrieved half the shots Im surprised he even managed 6 games)
Del Potro- YES! and he showed mental toughness and it was well deserved! happy for him.

Federer WIM 09 draw:

QF: Karlovic (22 seed)
SF: Haas (24 seed)
F: Roddick - forever his pet

DelPo winning this match definitely would have been a better story, after going through Murray, Nole and Rafa to win his first MS. Hopefully he won't get discouraged by this result and gets confidence from it, as he should, so he can remain a huge threat for everyone on tour.

Surprising victory for Rafa. He has probably been lucky that the top 3 are not at peak form and JMDP has reached the final a bit gassed out. But credit to him for grabbing the chance with both hands: beating Jekyll Gulbis, Fed, Berdych and DelPo on HC in a row is nothing to sneeze at after a long layoff.

Yea, I would not at all be surprised to see Nadal take back the number one ranking. He'll probably do his usual on clay, win 2/3 Masters and Roland Garros, and I like his chances for Wimbledon. At that point, he'll be so far ahead of everyone in the race that Djokovic would need to sweep the U.S. Open and several Masters to have a chance at stopping Nadal.

Unlikely. I don't believe that Nadal is at THAT level yet. Meaning he probably would have lost today had be played against Djokovic.

Djokovic may yet beat Nadal on RG and other clay events. Nadal IMO is not playing at the same level as he played at clay last year. But then Djoko's form is also a question-mark. Can he play better than he did last year? Nadal will definitely play a little better than he is doing now - as he gets more matches and more momentum.

I think the clay season will be very interesting. Djoko will be super-hungry for RG and Nadal as always won't give it up without a fight.

So what really is a tough draw then. Headcase tsonga? big john? Nadal beat so many big hitters back to back which is his worst matchup. Is a tough draw just defined as going through djokovic? Any victory where Nadal doesn't beat djokovic is an asterisk then? Maybe we should measure the toughness of Feds draws by whether he had to go through Rafa then?

According to **** logic, Nadal has to play the top 4 all back to back to back to back, for it to be a convincing and deserving title.

Fed however can sidestep his master Rafa for MONTHS (Most of 2009) and last year , sidestep Nole in the finals etc.. and its a top quality win:)

Level of play matters more than the brand name of your opponent in terms of getting past them. Berdych and Federer are "better" than Gulbis, but Gulbis definitely was the one who stuck it to Nadal the most, especially on his backhand drives. He had several break points to serve for the match if I recall correctly and never really let off the aggression. Delpo was amazing, but he seemed to let go of his winning gameplan at times due to fatigue.

In terms of the fierceness of his opponents, it seemed to be in this order: Gulbis/Delpo, Berdych, Harrison, Fed (lol).

That's all I've got.

It's really pathetic. They're just mad though. The trophy has been bitten, you'd think it was their necks :p

Agreed. I think it is safe to say that Gulbis played top 5-10 level tennis this week. I hope he can keep it up.

Hilarious and predictable garbage from the haters and ****s.

Nadal is on sterioids, he was on a silent ban, his knee was never injured, he moonballed his way to victory, he cheated, his celebrations are disgusting, he had an easy draw, Gulbis choked, Federer was injured, Berdych is his pigeon, Delpo was tired.

Apparently admitting that Nadal played well and is a great player is impossible.

All I have to say is:

And the really great thing is that it wasn't just a one-off. He's been playing well all 2013. Maybe he's finally devoting himself physically and mentally to staying consistent. It would be nice to see, as he has a lot of talent, even though he changed his forehand to that gut-wrenchingly hideous motion he has now.

They are always crying :). If its not about Nadal, its about Djokovic. If Delpo beats Fed a few times, they will cry about Delpo too.

Anyway we need to show these poor souls empathy and love to bring them out of their darkness.

So if Nadal struggles against journeymen it means he had a tough draw but if Djokovic double bagels everyone his draw was paethetic. Got it.

Your bitterness is reaching new levels. Djokovic is the world number 1. Nadal has only recently come back from 7 months out.
