The BB&T Atlanta Open is the first official tournament in the US Open series. We can now look forward to the North American hard court season and not look back! It seems the final round of qualifying will be played on Day 1 tomorrow, likely along with a few 1st round match-ups that are already set.

pospisil really needs a deep run here, unless he can repeat another run at the rogers cup his ranking will drop big time after it

I take Isner at home. The only guy who I can see issuing a challenge is Querrey (who knows Isner's game inside and out).

Monfils is a remote possibility too, I guess. If he can return well and have three good consistent sets.

I'm going for Anderson. He's quietly playing very well this year so it's about time he goes all the way and wins a title and this field looks like the one to do it in.

Final last year was terrible for Anderson, he was dominating, i am sure he had better stats than Isner, had many break points, didn't convert any (I think he had 2 match points as well).

Two real homeboys in the draw...Ginepri draws Staks R1 while Dudi won't need a chair to stand on to hug The Donald after their 1R match.

It's on British betting sites for those who can access betting sites or who care about Atlanta.

Go Pospisil. . He and Sock are playing doubles as well.

Thiemo de Bakker retired lost to Steve Diez 7-6, 0-2.

He will be playing him again in 1 Round.

Rajeev Ram missed out on winning against Michael Venus, he could have got a direct 2R because of Monfils withdrawal, at least he gets 1 more chance against Istomin as LL

Okay, the draw is really messed up now.

Steven Diez played Thiemo de Bakker in the final round of qualifying and de Bakker lost by retirement, yet de Bakker is now a lucky loser in the main draw against....Diez again! For starters, that's some weird coincidence but also, how can de Bakker be a lucky loser if he retired from his qualifying match against Diez? Wouldn't that mean he's unfit to play the tournament?

Not only that, but two other losers in the final round of qualifying today - Rajeev Ram and Alex Kuznetsov - ended up being re-inserted into the main draw as lucky losers.

Weird tourney so far.

EDIT: Woops, didn't notice tennisaddict beat me to it.

Gosh...what happened to Donald Young? I thought he was a up and coming USA player? Now he can't get out of round one at the BBT.

This is a bit of a joke tournament, so many LL, Debakker, Diez and qualifier Venus gets a bye for the first round.

Diez is not a lucky loser. He actually qualified for the main draw. But yea, 3 of the 4 losers in the final round of qualifying - de Bakker, Ram and Kuznetsov - get into the main draw, which is odd. Blame all the players who pulled out of the tournament though.

Harrison is getting obliterated by Smyczek 6-0 5-1. Talk about another USTA dud.

Meanwhile, after being fortunate to get by de Bakker, courtesy of de Bakker's retirement, in qualifying, Diez just lost the 1st set in the re-match 6-1. I guess de Bakker is fine now...

De Bakker up 6-1, 4-1 now.

Maybe he really was affected when they played before. Pretty unusual immediate turn around score wise.

Ryan Harrison has just hit rock bottom. Devastating loss to Smyczek, after getting edged by Hewitt in Newport. This could be a ten count.

Wow, 0 and 2! What the heck has happened to Ryan lately? Methinks time for a whole new coach and a whole new mind-set because the present ones are getting him nowhere. IMO he's too good to be constantly sustaining losses like that!

Haha that's hilarious. What are the odds of something like that happening? Playing the same guy twice in a row in the same tournament.

Yes, surprising return to mediocrity. I thought JMG would pull him together but it's still early in their arrangement.

BTW, Harrison got another WC into Atlanta, his fourth this yr. People always complained when DY got WCs, so far I havent really seen any comments on Harrison's WCs.

Man, I thought the Winston Salem Open didn't have a good player list, it seems like BB&T is hurting this year...
Is this just me? Last year it seemed like the tournament had a few more top names didn't it?

WS Open still has the four wild cards to hand out too, i'm stoked. I'm hoping we can snag a DelPo.
We've had Berdych and Tsonga in the past, so it's not too far fetched.

Indianapolis really sucks at supporting tennis. so that Is why this GREAT event is in super HOT Atlanta. That is the sucky state of tennis today

Gasquet, Monfils, and Stepanek all pulled out at the last minute which is why they had 3 lucky losers get in. If Gasquet and Monfils had stayed in I'd say it would have been the best field they've had since it started a few years ago.

On Harrison -

He just started with jan michael gambill for wimbledon. For those who watched the match, and paid attention to what respected analysts said both on air and online, you'd know that he played better ball there, despite losing. And, as noted, was edged by Hewitt in Newport. Sorry, but I'm not going to write off a coach after only 3 tournaments, especially in this case. Jmg has plans to develop Harrison's backhand and strategy, and that will take time.

There's something else that's interesting to note. Harrison had a back injury a month and a half or 2 months back. He pulled out of doubles here in Atlanta with Robby, which isn't something he normally does. So I'm wondering if that was a factor in the singles match.

Any fellow forum members going to the BBT this weekend?
I am waiting to see how things play out, but I hope to go either Sat or Sun.

Jack, is this a tournament that is worth flying out to see ? I live in another state and will have to fly there.
I used to go to Cincinatti but it is very frustrating there because it is very very difficult to get Tickets close to the court. It is pretty much impossible to get tickets in and near box seats there.

Another option is Canadian open but it is too expensive when you add everything up.
Washington is a good option and I can get tickets very near the court still.
US open is NO longer a option for me because I can't get vacation time during those 2 weeks anymore

The US dollar goes a long way in Canada... and it's a great tournament

He has pulled out of the dubs due to a "foot" issue.

My wife and I are going on Sunday. I purchased my tickets about a month ago, and this will be my third year attending. We're sitting in Section 102.

I'm not as excited this year, because the players I was hoping to see (Monfils or Gasquet) are no longer in the tournament. I'm hoping Sock / Pospisil make the final in doubles; it will be nice to see them play.

I stopped by Atlantic Station for lunch today and saw John Isner. He was taking pictures with kids and signing autographs. I'm not a real big fan of his game, but he does seem to be a genuinely nice guy.

Both Sock and Pospisil win their singles match. It would be interesting if they won the doubles title..and one of them won singles?

He is a pleasure around groups. He played an exho at the club I worked for right after his epic 1st USO Series run and was super friendly to all there!
