2014 Blue Gray Classic

This is a well run event that happens each year in Montgomery. I attended this event two years ago, the last time Clemson was in it. Some cool stuff about this event is that the players of each of the 16 teams (8 men and 8 women) stay at host families in a nice area of Montgomery as opposed to a hotel. 2 players per household. It was nice because there were die-hard Auburn fans hosting Clemson players and coming out to the match of Clemson vs Auburn pulling for Clemson because of the players they hosted and of course the families of the other teams supported their players as well.

Also there is a nice banquet the night before with all teams and coaches. The guys in suite and tie and the girls in nice dresses. (Except for the Texas Tech men two years ago who decided to wear jeans). The banquet is filled with games and such and its all very fun and of course the guys and girls scope out potential hookups. If I remember correctly, the Arizona women's team was quite aggressive.

This year's event is starting on Friday. The draw still isn't out though.

The men's teams competing will be: Alabama, Auburn, Miss State, Clemson, Texas Tech, Boise State, Princeton and VCU.

They try and make the draw so that the SEC teams avoid playing one another.

women's teams: Alabama, Auburn, Illinois, Oklahoma State, Rice, Tulane, Texas Tech, Rice

On the men's side the favorite is probably Miss State but not by very much. Clemson, VCU and Auburn will provide competition for the title and Texas Tech could pull an upset or two.

could be really interesting, how MSU is faring here, cause i still ve my doubts about this team. Auburn and especially Clemson will give them a good fight, Texas Tech has lost some good players (all the brazil) , Boise State and VCU has a little bit a down year , also VCU certainly still has some talent, but they lost at Penn State on Sunday. Okla State could be interesting, as they ve beaten Vols before.

Predictions:

Miss State 4, VCU 3
Auburn 4, Texas Tech 2
Alabama 4, Boise State 2
Clemson, 4, Princeton 0

Miss State 4, Auburn 2
Clemson 4, Alabama 1
VCU 4, Texas Tech 1
Boise State 4, Princeton 3

Texas Tech 4, Princeton 2
VCU 4, Boise State 1
Auburn 4, Alabama 3
Clemson 4, Miss State 3

Auburn/Texas Tech should be pretty good - I might lean toward TT 4-2 or 4-3. Regardless should be a close match.

I will be pulling for Texas Tech because I want to eliminate any possibility of Clemson getting a rematch with Auburn, would rather play new teams. And I agree that they definitely could win.

Showing Boise State has taken doubles after 6-3 and 6-5 wins. I thought this nonsense was supposed to stop after the indoors. Or is this just kinda like a choose your own adventure season? More than half the season will use this Disney scoring at this point.

Decision was made to use this weekend to keep tournament on schedule as all matches are played outside.

Answer I got regarding the scoring.

See this was my fear with this system. I was under the impression that it could NOT be used at all after indoors because it was simply experimental. But this makes it seem like it's an option for time saving. Leaving the door open for the rest of the season for any matches threatened by rain or hell even coaches who just want to get home earlier. Slippery slope.

this is really surprising me, as VCU just lost last sunday vs Penn State.
SEC has problems in my eyes. 'i like Boise and VCU so its okay for me.

I guarantee a victory from a SEC school on Saturday at the Blue Gray. Somebody has to win the Miss St/Auburn match.

For those of us who suffered through the ridiculous 2013 season with respect to SEC rankings, today was a good day. Sorry to be negative, but I am looking forward to some computer rankings bad karma spreading through the SEC via non-conference losses.

It is nice to see I agree. I watched the Auburn coaches interview previewing the GT and Clemson matches a week ago and there was an abrupt change in tone in his voice each time he uttered "the SEC". It was with such reverence as if he was speaking the name of the god he worshipped.

Alabama destroys Princeton. Princeton must have been really down after yesterday. They gave a very poor effort today against a reeling Alabama team

Now the #5 singles goes from 2-1 to 4-3 for VCU after being stuck for eons, but #3 singles is still stuck on 4-3 VCU.

EDIT: Now 6-3 VCU at #3, 4-2 VCU in the dual match. Finally. Was there a rain delay?

that's what I was thinking but then there wasn't any delay in getting the Clemson match started. The doubles was being updated while VCU match was still stuck.

Inexcusable really. Clemson now up 3-1 apparently but no idea what's going on. No twitter either.
Miss State and Princeton though with spot on score updates, 7th place match more important than the 3rd place one.

The Auburn/Texas Tech women's match said the same thing. My guess is they've got 4 matches going on at the same time so they can get everyone out of town and they don't have the resources to do live scoring for 4 matches at once.

But in that case then how are they updating the team scores at all? If they can update the overall score then why not the court by court?
And also Clemson/TT will be the only mens match of the day to not feature live scores by court.
