Halep is back, but facing a very tough draw after 2 rounds:

Halep: Bye, Flipkens, V. Williams/Safarova, Sharapova (QF), Kvitova/Bouchard, S. Williams/Kerber
- very tough

Kvitova/Bouchard: let's see if any of these two get to the revival of the W final

Bouchard: Bye, Giorgi/Kuznetsova, Ivanovic, Kvitova/Suarez-Navarro (QF), Halep/Sharapova, S. Williams/Kerber
- pretty tough too

Walk in the park for S. Williams on her side and perhaps in general, if Halep doesn't really show up:

S. Williams: Bye, Stosur, Penetta, Jankovic/Muguruza/Sloane/Azarenka (QF), A. Radwanska/Kerber, Halep/Sharapova/Kvitova/Bouchard

Funny for Serena to have again Stosur in 2nd, as in Montreal. Jankovic and Sloane might play each other again after Montreal.

Cirstea Ivanovic

the winner on Bouchard's path
Cirstea needs to recover a troveload of points after Montreal.

Venus up 1st today, you would have though Cincy would have given her a later match since she was in Canada on Sunday playing.

Disappointing to see Venus go out already but her loss is more understandable than Tsonga's. She's 34 years old and her run last week seemed more Cinderella-like. On top of that she was playing a competent opponent in Safarova.

Clearly, Venus put up a fight, while Tsonga didn't.

Oh lord Sharapova takes a 10 minute "bathroom break" after losing 2nd set to keys. I swear only azarenka and Nadal use this crap as often as she does. The crowd boood her and good for them.

Bouchard: Bye, Giorgi/Kuznetsova, Ivanovic, Kvitova/Suarez-Navarro (QF), Halep/Sharapova, S. Williams/Kerber
- pretty tough too

Camila Giorgi 4 7 7 3
Svetlana Kuznetsova 6 6 4 6

It's Kuznetsova, the least convenient of the above pair, next for Bouchard.

And yes, I am shamelessly quoting myself. I am that good :)

Halep doesn't have yet the best of serves
and only some of her winners
she still needs to improve/learn her slice and volleys.

Flipkens has played tough, inconveniencing her with her slice, volleys and dropshot -- very varied game.

Halep takes 1st, after many set points.

I saw Ivanovic against Cirstea and she was smoking FH and BH winners effortlessly, painting the lines.

I think she is in great form and expect her to do very well till USO. She lost in a very close match to Coco at Montreal, but i think she is in for a deep run .

Svitolina takes the 1st set against Kvitova 6-2.

Aaaand, this is why I've never been able to take Kvitova seriously. I tried to after she won Wimbledon - I love her game - but she obviously can't be or seems disinterested in being a consistent contender.

Well, I gave you her reading based on a doubles match in Montreal, and it has been confirmed:

Elina Svitolina 6 7 7
Petra Kvitova 2 6 2

Easier path for Bouchard (QF) and Halep (SF), if they themselves are going to get there.

Serena Stosur match living up to its potential for once. No breaks up to the tiebreak (but not a total servefest either). Serena down 4-0 in the tb but pulls it off in the end after 58 tension filled minutes ni wish it was over already! I don't know if I can take a second set :)

I haven't seen Stosur this focused in ages. She's on a mission to make everyone forget last week's drubbing. Still hope (and think) ReRe will pull it out, but this is nice to see.

Disappointing she lost that tiebreak. She should have taken it.

Lol I love her passion

Edit: and she wins! Yes!!!!

"Sick" according to Serena. I concur  I feel like I can finally breathe.

Serena eeks this one out 7-6(7) 7-6(7). Great effort by Stosur to make it close but she still fell short when it counted.

Serena's got Pennetta or Townsend in the 3rd round. It'll be cool if she faces Townsend!

It really is. I'm grateful I'm only a part time fan of hers. I'm too weak to handle full time fandom of her :)

one of the most complete games on tour, one of the few who can stand toe to toe with Serena; but it's more or less constant underachievement for her since she won the US Open.
