Berdych prevailed over Federer last year in the semis after saving 3 match points.

Federer in 3, he needs this title. Especially with the absence of Nadal, Djokovic, or Murray in the final. Although, the hardest opponent for him besides those 3 is arguably Berdych, he has beaten Fed on many big stages like Olympics, Wimbledon ect. Should be a great match, hoping for the Fed to prevail.

I'd like to see Federer get a win here... gain some more confidence for 2014... but I just don't see it.

Even though Berdych never seems to be able to win titles on his own initiative... he seems to thrive on beating top players when they have something to prove... or when something important is on the line for his opponent. The guy is a walking Top-10 spoiler. It seems to be the only thing that drives him to play well against the Top-10.

Berdych in 3.

Hoping for the best (Fed in 2). But not holding any expectations since Fed has already exceeded what I wanted as he has beaten Djoker. A good week for him regardless of the final.

Berdych in 2.

He's been very very good and Federer pulled out everything he could to take out Djokovic, i dont think he will have enough left in the tank against Berdych. Predicting 2 close sets but it'll be straight sets.

Federer had this match last year and should've won. No let ups this time around. Berdych is playing well, but if Federer shows up I'll never favour Berdych over him. It'll be close, but I think Fed will win in 3.

Its been too long for Federer, Berdych had to wait a long time before his Rotterdam success now its Federers turn to end the trophy drought.

The surface suits and with the mood he is in I predict straight sets for Federer. If anybody around here is a bettor his odds are huge!

Hopefully he takes the net away from Berdych and gets him running side to side.

I pick Federer in 2 sets. Confidence boost after beating Djokovic. Also Berdych-Federer never played since Federer went to the new racquet this year, he won't outpower him as much. Should be interesting.

Tough to call. Berdych is in incredible form these days and has enjoyed a lot of success against Federer lately. He likes to crush the second serves of Federer.

I just hope Federer can play as well as he did today.

It won't be easy for Roger to play his net game against Berdych who hits the ball with so much power.

Before the RF-Djoker SF, I had Djokovic beating Berdych in the final or Berdych beating Federer. So, I go with Berdych in 3. Berdych enjoys playing against Federer.

But then I was wrong about Djokovic beating Federer in the semi final. So...I could be wrong again.

Or right the second the time:twisted:

The new racquet didn't help Federer against Nadal at all. It won't be the reason Federer beats Berdych if he does beat him. It would be because he's playing great.

Yeah, but that's Nadal. I agree Federer has to play good/great, but the racquet might help him if he does play well. A closer match would be to look at how he demolished Tsonga.

Roger was great against Jo in Melbourne, but the latter's erratic form had a lot to do with it. I'd argue that there is no precedent for tomorrow's match - it's simply a toss-up.

I agree, but it's still better to compare Berdych to Tsonga than compare Berdych to Nadal.

Depends which Federer shows up in the final. If he's in any kind of form reminiscent of today, he wins in straight sets. If not, it can go either way in 3.

Fed's been on and off on his first serve this week, and with only a 2% margin between him and Djokovic on 1st serve he'll have to get it going EARLIER on. He needs to be careful not to let Berdych get to comfortable with him. IMO Fed's backhand has shown improvement with the abbreviated swing and lessened spin/flatter, and it should prove to be a useful weapon for returning pace against the big hitter, and for passing shots when he decides to come to net.

Berdych struggled vs Kohlschreiber who is a far less capable player than Federer in-general. Federer serves and hits his forehands way bigger and even then Berdych was beaten many times for sheer pace by Kohlschreiber.

Unless Berych serves amazingly I doubt he'll beat Federer.

I haven't watched Birdman play this week but I'm going with Fed. I hope he brings the serve & variety tomorrow.

Fed just needs to remember his variety.

Take his matches against Delpo for example. Sometiems he tries to go toe to toe during the baseline exchanges and often end up losing. Then he tries the slice, which even though puts him into a defensive position, it changes up the play well and often Fed can change this into aggression during the rally.

Plus the S&V and dropshot definitely needs to be there. Last year when Fed gets himself into a hole he forgets his variety and tries to slug it out on the baseline.

Fed's got a big ego. He wants to be the best from every court position. No player can be like that regardless of how gifted you are.

You don't try to out-serve Isner or Karlovic. So why try to out-hit Delpo or Berdych, eh? Berdych's strength is his powerful shots. That's probably all he's got along with a good serve. If Federer tries to go toe to toe with the Birdman to see who hits the ball harder, he'll make himself look like a fool and lose the match.
If he plays smart and brings his all court game, Birdych will be in trouble.

So, the Birdman says he's happy it's Federer he has to face in the final because he can beat him.

Federer says "good for him".

Should be good.

Federer is playing more aggressive and with more confidence then he has in quite a while. He seems to be comfortable with his new frame now. And Edberg has him attacking more then he has in years. Federer will beat Berdych for sure. Even if he's not playing his best.

You are talking about Fed couple years ago. Looking at his recent victories in 2014, he doesn't get in to beating the opponent at their game kind of mindset. He is bringing his variety & touch to throw opponents off balance.

Wish he had done that years ago instead of getting in to a baseline contest with Nadal (look at 2008 wimbledon Final when he tried to outhit Nadal from baseline).

Should be a good match and his backhand seems to pack a bit more punch and flatter (larger frame + short swing). He can and probably will throw Birdman off.

what i don't want to see is fed 'feelin' it' with the new stick and getting into a slugfest, which will lead to berdych pulling the trigger on dtl bh, get lots of weak stretched fh returns, and putaways to the open court.

he used to beat tomas with regularity with his old-school tactics—get that short cc slice rocking, move him around, and exploit his relatively average net game.

Haha, I had the same. But after seeing Fed vs. Djoko, I have a little more hope for Fed - it's gonna be pretty close though.
But as discussed above, he needs to bring his variety, needs to get Berdych to the net with the short slice and all those things. If he plays well, he wins. If he doesn't, Birdman is too solid and is playing too well to not take advantage. And contrary to facing Djokodal, Birdman actually has actual belief and thus mental power vs. Federer. As opposed to 5 years back.

I'd say T-Birds hit his Wawrinka phase, as in he wants a slam bad.

I think he's worth a look at Wimbledon

Wow, what a complete lie. i mean the person who wrote that news item. Berdych actually said:

“Both of them are the greatest, so choosing between them is too hard,” Berdych said when asked who he would prefer to meet. “I just need to focus on myself and be prepared because I will need to bring my best tennis.”

True. Berdych will blow if you off the court if you keep feeding him those fast baseline shots. You need something to pull him out of his comfort zone. The guy is 2m tall, so has trouble moving around the court and getting to low balls. Federer should try to exploit that instead of trying to see who can hit the hardest.

No, Federer is the favourite according to the odds.
I just put 100$ on Federer to win this final, he played so good yesterday, and Berdych seems to be bothered by a sore back.
