Congrats to Rafa Nadal, 9 RG titles, an awesome feat and I doubt it will ever be equalled. Truly the King of Clay.
My commisserations to Djokovic. It just wasn't his day today. I can only hope he won't have to wait for fortune so long to finally come his way like it did with Federer...

Unfortunately it was a rather mediocre match from both sides today. Surely not Nadal's best final at RG, but it was enough to get the job done, as Djokovic didn't look up for the task eventually. Started off very well but just couldn't keep up his level of play, started to make more and more errors and even stupid decisions at times. A bit déja vu actually - not unlike the many finals a certain someone else has had to endure the past decade so many times.

Well, finally, on to grass now. Hopefully Rafa will show up in Halle, I'm looking forward to seeing him play live over there. :)

Oh and that idiot who shouted out while Djoko had to serve to save the match for himself should be very, very ashamed of himself. Terrible. This kind of "fans" should be getting a lifetime stadium ban.

So Once again...... WHAT is the explanation that Novak can beat up on Nadal in Italian open but NOT at the French open....... Was Nadal just BETTER today,,, or is it the Clay,,,,,,or Is it the court or balls ? What is it ???????????????????????????????? very confused

I'm kinda of happy for you. You are best Nadal fan by a mile.

Hey! Thanks a lot mate. :) but i'm kind of a fanboy ...not the best Nadal fan.

Now on to the Grass season. Good luck to your favorite King Roger there. Grass is his kingdom :)

Congrats to the king of clay for his 9th FO and 14 slams! Amazing that he's won the tournament 4 straight times, and then 5 times! That's crazy!

This is the 10 consecutive years at winning at least 1 slam. And he's leadind the Grand Slam tally this decade so far:

8 Nadal
5 Djokovic
2 Federer
2 Murray
1 Wawrinka

What a beast!

Stop being such a silly Djokovic hater..sigh lame Nadal fangirl will never learn.

No, you have it wrong. Unlike you I am not a hater of any player. I felt badly for Djokovic but the reality is he will very likely not beat Nadal at the FO. Federer could not do it and now Djokovic has lost there more times than Federer! I am being realistic. You should try it sometime when you stop vomiting sour grapes. Don't you see how silly and insecure you sound?

so nadal has more than Borg now ,,,right ?

What is this ? what kind of classless fans would yell out before Novak's 2nd serve ???

"Just like the 2012 final, Djokovic double-faulted on match point. This time, he was not helped by the crowd as two spectators shouted before the Serb's second serve."

I don't hate Djokovic but how many times do we have to see him play Nadal at the FO and lose? We are at number six and it was five for Federer. I have seen enough to face reality. If you want to live in some cuckoo fantasy land fine with me.
Don't worry, the message should be very clear after Lendlvic donates another slam to Murray in a few weeks time.

Thanks in advance Novak

Anyone thought the final was somewhat boring? I mean I didn't expect another 2013 encounter but still...

This here 2014 Roland Garros Final is the most intense thing I've ever seen on a tennis court, and I felt this crowd was more exciting than last year's SF crowd. This here 2014 Roland Garros Final is the most entertaining tennis match I've ever seen. I know Nadal had more winners last year (61 winners in 5 sets), but I definitely found today's 44 winners more exciting.

Thanks m8, I think Wimby might his last chance to take GS-title (actually very realistic, tbh) and USO of course if Fed is lucky with the draw but that remains to be seen. :)

It is as simple as best-of-three versus best-of-five.

It took him a few years of hard work, but Djokovic has become good enough on clay to put together two high-level sets against Nadal. He should be congratulated for that. That is a major achievement that nobody really has.

However, he does not yet have the ability to sustain that level for three, four, or five sets. And this is what you must do with Nadal. Only one man has done it -- Robin Soderling. Soderling was able to serve out of his mind and hit club-forehand winners for three sets. It was a once-in-a-lifetime performance against Nadal.

Last year, Djokovic held his level for two-and-a-half sets, but his form dropped in the last two games of the final set. Nadal would just not lower his game.

Djokovic has nothing to be ashamed of. It isn't a bad thing to say that you're the second greatest clay courter in this era. Anymore than Andy Roddick should be ashamed to say that he was the second greatest grass-courter in his era.

*Sarcasm Alert* Surprise! Surprise! Congratulations to Rafa for his win. Glad to hear that Novak took a set off of him. Still think that for as long as Nadal is on the tour they ought to just advance him to the final and have everyone else battle to play him. Gosh Darn-does Borg EVER age????

I saw on another tennis forum, someone said that the French commentators said in the 1st Set Djokovic was serving at 5-3 and Nadal had breakpoint, and Djokovic served a double-fault according to hawkeye. So according to hawkeye, Djokovic didn't really win the 1st set.

I think we should also give credit to Fed for taking that rare 2009 opportunity and making the most of it. Otherwise his legacy would be totally different.

johnny mac said it, while anyone watching could see.

He had to come back from two sets down against haas in 2009.That would have been a disaster for fed had he lost that match.Fed is very fortunate to have taken that french open title. At least he can say he was the second greatest claycourter in that era imo

Why do so many people wear those hats with the ribbon around it? Guga and Nadal's sister and lots of other had the hat. Is it the official hat of Roland Garros?

It was a great match but too many errors to consider it a classic, never mind "the most entertaining etc."
If you think so, you have not been watching tennis for that long.
The list of better matches would not be that long (but 20 plus at least), starting with Bjorg-McEnroe matches in Wimby 80/81 and including some of the Nadal-Djokovic matches as well.
Still, great win by Nadal, the guy is immense, how long can he go on?

Actually, yes it is.... I believe that both RG and W have hats.... But RG definitely does

Fair enough. Nobody looked good with that hat. Especially the people that have good hair, they hid their quality. Guga and Nadal's sister are both known for their hair.

But, this was my favorite crowd ever. Very animated and vocal crowd, hanging on every point. It felt like a nervous crowd too. Like when they make the trumpet sound, a couple of people did it in a rush, like they were nervous.

Definitely of the grand slam finals I haven't attended, this is the one I would have enjoyed to be in the crowd of most.

I liked the hats! Rafa even looked great in the one he wore at his birthday celebration!

^ Yeah the hat looks ok in that picture. I just didn't like it on people with big hair like Guga and Nadal's sister.

Definitely my favorite match of all-time. But I've probably said that about several of Nadal's slam finals. Every time he's in a slam final it takes on more importance than the previous, because there is a new bigger record hinging on it. And the more history that is on the line, the more powerful each point becomes. But I think today's win broke more records simultaneously than his other titles. The record I've been anticipating for a while now, he got it: 10 straight years of at least one slam per year. That is probably my favorite record of them all.

That approach would also increase your unforced error count and the subsequent mental negatives that come with that.

Exactly.

All this people who say "just go for it" surely did not watch RG matches against Nadal or if they did they have not learn anything.

Yes, you would hit some great winners, but would you win more sets, never mind the match?

Statistically, unlikely.

I better see Soderling match again to remember how it was done (once)

That was good at the end when Nadal hugged Uncle Toni and then talked into his ear for a while. Also when Nadal got the cramps in his hand, that made the trophy holding portion of the show very unique.
