Gotta love Nadal twisting the knife. The mind games have become more annoying and more elaborate as he got older. Had this gone to fifth set, Nadal would have drowned in his own blood for the victory. Does anyone really think he wouldn't fight in 5th set?

Yeah, the conditions were tough, but he wasn't the only one who was suffering. Djokovic was a zombie for large stretches of the match.

Federer's comments about the RG Final

Federer: “I was very happy for him because it’s tremendous what he proves on clay every year,” he said. “You have to raise your hat to him. For me, it was clear before that he is the favourite. Now, everybody says that it was evident that he’ll win. But before it was said that he can’t play tennis anymore because he had lost on clay twice. Therefore, I think it’s nice that he proved them otherwise.”

Fed has truly lost his mind. How is his major rival getting closer to his slam count a good thing? His problem has been complacency. He needs to grab that #18 to truly distance himself from others. His legacy is under threat and he's turning into another Berdych. I want to see some fierce arrogance in Fed once more. When he was the top dog and he knew it. He still has it in him.

I actually agree with you for once. It does kind of annoy me every year when I hear Federer saying how happy he is that Nadal's won yet another RG, even though the two of them have been major rivals for the best part of a decade. If Djokovic had won on Sunday I guarantee we wouldn't have heard a peep from him.

Can't say I'm at all surprised that Federer's happy for Nadal. He'd probably be in a deep state of depression had Djokovic won it.

Yea. It's like because Federer wasn't able to beat Rafa at RG, he surely doesn't want Djokovic to do it. Because if he did, all comparisons will be started that Djokovic did what Roger could never do.
I think Roger would be glad if someone else took out Rafa at RG, anyone but Djokovic.

He hates Djokovic and always has but what can you do? Btw mate I want to apologise for the way I spoke to you last week. It was beneath me and I feel ashamed for getting so frustrated, I hope that you can forgive me.

Yea, i was surprised, more like shocked to read that kind of language from you. Didn't expect that at all.
But overall you're a good poster, I know that. Things can get a bit heated up here sometimes. But if all of us guys (apart from the likes of Monfed, cronus etc...) met at a pub, we would be sharing beers and enjoying Tennis debates, i'm sure. :)

So let's put that argument behind us, and move ahead.

In my opinion Federer said he was so happy for Nadal (and will continue to say it) because he likes people to think he's not worried about Nadal surpassing 17. Federer has no reason to tell the truth, so he may as well make himself look cool, calm and collected etc.

I agree too. He spoke about Nadal as if he's not feeling the tension, the anxiety and the agression against a major rival.

Not the way to go if you ever expects to beat this rival in the main stage of professional tennis.

I'm fine now FB but I'm not gonna lie, I've been feeling a bit low these past couple of days. I hope you're alright mate.

I already wrote it after the match:

I am not disappointing much. Rather I am jovial atm (I had a lot of personal issues to deal with in last few days, with some sorted out and Novak's loss would be the last thing I will be concerned about.). But, yes I feel for some other Novak fans.

Djokovic2011, cheer up bud. Okay, Novak lost but don't make this loss hinder your personal life. :)

jm1980, get over it mate. It's just a game.

I find it surprising that fans take these losses to the core. Whenever my favorite team or player loses, the effect lasts for couple of hours. For me, Most heartbreaking Novak's loss was RG SF 13. And the pain lasted for 4 hours only. ;)

If Novak can forget about his loss in 1 day and spend some leisure time at a beach delightfully, why should I spend my night and day getting depressed about someone's loss?

I have a clear cut demarcation between tennis life and personal life. :)

Aww that's such a nice thing for you to say mate. I feel fine now, my sadness usually lasts for a day or so at the most and then I draw a line under it and occupy myself with other things. Let's look forward to Wimbledon and hope for the best! :)

It would be awesome if Djokovic loses in the 1st week of Wimbledon, because he'd lose a lot of points thereby gifting Nadal a big lead (and Nadal can really slam home the advantage by winning Wimbledon on what looks like very dry grass at this point). Even if Nadal makes SF, big profit for Nadal (720 points for SF). Although I'd be surprised if Nadal lost a SF, given that he's the greatest SF player of all-time.

Hey, I'd never noticed Fed's dad/Mirka/Gavin/Gwen were right next to Nadal's family! Classy Fed dad clapping BTW.

I never noticed that either.

I always thought that Nadal's celebration after winning the 2008 Wimbledon was almost disrespectful to his opponent and the tournament. I've never seen that before and it seems especially bizarre at Wimbledon.

They've done that at Wimbledon for years. I believe they only changed it a couple years ago. They always had the 2 families sit in the same box.

That's because Ferrer and Murray both play nervously against Nadal on clay and therefore make many errors. Djokovic is used to playing and beating Nadal on ALL surfaces so he just does not need to fear him like those 2 (and everybody else) do!

Neither Ferrer or Murray have the game to beat Nadal on clay to begin with. I laugh how some mock Ferrer as Nadal's spanish lapdog when in fact he is a huge overachiever in his head to head vs Nadal. A guy who is basically a poor mans Chang with 7 wins over Nadal, 2 on clay. That is so much better than he ought to have done. His head to head vs Nadal shouldnt be any better than his record vs Federer.

Why should Ferrer never have beaten Nadal? He's got an incredible work ethic and can play very well on HC as well as on clay. He's got a great return, terrific defense and his fitness is probably the best on the tour. I think you're being really harsh on him.

Well if it wasn't for Professor RalphAgassi himself to grace this thread.

Didn't Ferrer beat Ralph at MC 14 AND took a set off him at RG 14, Professor?

Its frustrating that Ferrer is not declining at all. Nadal is heavy favorite each time they meet at slams, but Ferrer is a real nuisance because he forces Nadal to use up energy at the QF stage. Ferrer is the first name I look for in Nadal's draw, hoping that Nadal doesn't have to play him in QF. Its ironic that Ferrer is so self-motivated, given that he quit tennis to do brick-laying. I guess brick-laying scared him into becoming the hardest working player on tour. And I've heard a story about him having motivational problems as a kid, and his tennis coach punishing him for slackness.

I wouldnt say he should never win, but he has something like 7 wins which is IMO a huge overachievement. The matchup just shouldnt work well for him. He cant outrun Nadal, outmaneuver him, cant really overpower him. He probably has a better return of serve but in a matchup with 2 baseliners that isnt so much a factor. On hard courts I can see him matching up better with Nadal on clay since he can take the ball earlier, and his return is more effective, but on clay I cant see him doing much of anything to hurt Nadal and am surprised he is even as competitive as he is. I just find it funny when people pinpoint Ferrer as someone who underperforms vs Nadal, when in fact he does much better in the matchup than I expect if anything. If he is anyones lapdog or if there is any player he gives nothing against it is Federer, not Nadal, and there are players with Ferrer's style of play who trouble Federer while practically none with his style of play who bother Nadal other than Djokovic if you think of him like a zouped up Ferrer.

Is this a TTW match thread record btw? Searching other match threads, none of them seem so get past 140 pages.

EDIT: Of course, the actual match only lasted from pages 36-118...

I don't mind it, but there is reason Federer doesn't do it.

BTW, RG was Nadal's 7th final of the season. He's the leader. Amazingly #2 is Fed. Halle will be his 5th final. Djoko comes 3rd with 4.

I was just wondering vero if Nadal has ever played as many tournaments at this stage of the season before as he has in 2014. Halle was his 11th tournament so far this year.

Kind of hollow stat, given that he exited in the QF of Monte Carlo and Barcelona, and 3rd Round at Indian Wells.

Good question! This is actually in the ballpark of the # of events Rafa usually plays before Wimbledon. From 2005, most events to least events played:

1- 2005: 13
2- 2008: 12 + DC
3- 2007: 12
4- 2014: 11
5- 2009/2011: 10 + DC
6- 2012: 10
7- 2006/2010/2013: 9

Now what is the most remarkable is Nadal's extraordinary consistency in terms of success before W. Over 10 years, no less. Incredible. From most successful to least successful:

1- 2013: 7W + 2F
2- 2005: 6W + 1F
3- 2008: 5W + 2F + 2S
4- 2009: 5W + 2F
5- 2007: 5W + 1F
6- 2006: 5W + 2S
7- 2014: 4W + 3F
8- 2012: 4W + 1F + 3S
9- 2010: 4W + 1F + 2S
10-2011: 3W + 4F

There is only 1 year (2011) out of 10 when he arrived at Wimbledon with less than 4 titles!!! Beast stats :)

Why the hell did you guys have to bump up my post. I got an Infarction because of it.

I shouldn't have written it in the first place though.

Rafa has never had a 2nd part of the season (Wimbledon to WTF) more successful or even as successful as the 1st part:

1- 2005: 5W
2- 2013: 3W + 2F
3- 2010: 3W + 1F
4- 2008: 3W
5- 2007: 1W
6- 2011: 3F
7- 2009: 1F + 4S
8- 2006: 1F + 1S
9- 2012: awol

ETA: that means that unless history doesn't repeat (for the 1st time in his career), Rafa will win 7 titles total max this year...
