Every second tuesday of the French Open, the ITF celebrates the annual World Champions dinner. This year, the ITF has named Novak Djokovic as the best player of 2013. What do you think?

All Nadalians and Fedelians must burn the ITF institution right away!

that's…. Hard to support, to say the least, no matter what they say… Barely anything points to Djokovic as the best player of 2013...

World number two and the most consistent player the whole year. That's not hard to support.

okay… But best? :?

Roddick was the most consistent player (had the most wins) in 2009 or 2010 if I recall correctly… He wasn't called the best player as a result…

Look, I dislike Rafa quite a bit, but that title goes to him.

How come the number 2 in the world can be the best player of the year ?
He didn't lose Wimbledon's first round.

Yes

Really? In 2009, he reached world no. 6 and in 2010, he reached world no. 7. That statement is grossly exaggerated. And consistency doesn't equal number of wins. Consistency, I assume, is a combination of W/L ratio, titles won, and little variance in tournament performance.

The 2013 ATP World Tour No.1 was crowned on Nov.9, 2013.

I don't what the ITF's criteria for their "World Champion" are, but if they were awarding it to the best performer of 2013 they got it horribly wrong.

It's very simple, in 2013:

1. Nadal - 2 Majors
2. Djokovic - 1 Major, WTF
3. Murray - 1 Major

That's all that matters.

Nice to see ITF recognizes who was truly the best player in 2013 and is making a nice celebration about that fact.

Novak would exchange his 2013 results with Ralph in a heartbeat...Years down the line people will only remember slam wins.

Maybe because the #1 (IMO the true #1 for 2013 even though I am not his fan) has played less than 1/2 the year to get him to that point.
He flipped the switch on in March 2013 and flipped it off September 2013, that is 5 months of defending NO previous year points that got him to #1.
He may lose that #1 spot tomorrow, literally...

How come the number 1 in the world can't even win a set in the main draw of Wimbledon against a total journeyman?

Who was number 1 in Wimbledon?

Besides:
"Grass is for the cows,” said Ivan Lendl, while deciding to give the Wimbledon a miss in 1982 and go holidaying instead.

The only logical explanation is that Djokovic was the best player in the ITF-sanctioned events, while being close enough to Nadal in the ATP rankings. Nadal didn't play the Australian Open and lost in the first round of Wimbledon.

Think of how Serena Williams was crowned ITF Champion in 2012 despite finishing WTA #3, while Azarenka took home the WTA #1 that year. Both were Slam champions in 2012 and Azarenka was consistent in the WTA events as well.
