2014 WTA Tour Championship Singapore: Discussion Thread

BNP+Paribas+WTA+Finals+Previews+QmWjZZ3BNrEx.jpg

Welcome to this 2014 Tour Championship Singapore Discussion Thread!

The eight champions are in Singapore and the draw was completed.

Red Group
Serena Williams
Simona Halep
Eugenie Bouchard
Ana Ivanovic

White Group
Maria Sharapova
Petra Kvitova
Agnieszka Radwanska
Caroline Wozniacki

Will it be mainly a fight between Serena Williams and Sharapova?

Will Serena have a hiatus again and will this confirm the latest month, with a contest dominated by Shapova and Kvitova, perhaps the healthiest players at this time?

Will the newcomers Halep and Bouchard show they have healed and recovered from post-Wimbledon doldrums? Bouchard has done so lately.

Will the stalwarts Ana Ivanovic and Caroline Wozniacki confirm their great results during this year and get to the semifinals or more?

And finally, don't forget to vote in the poll:
Who is going to take the 2014 Tour Championship Singapore?

Predictions ...

Steve Tignor of tennis.com:

Semifinals: Kvitova d. S. Williams; Sharapova d. Halep

Final: Kvitova d. Sharapova

just saw Serena has a 59-4 record against the other seven..that's why it's tough to get too excited about the WTA

Yes, but she has a knee injury and Ana and Caro have both taken her out when she was at what appeared to be 85-90%, so I feel this YEC is not a lock for her. Also, Maria is in form and has to get a win off of her eventually...I hope it doesn't happen here, but it's certainly possible. If her movement is impaired, the women in this tournament are competent enough to take advantage.

I hope you're right. I am probably the most nervous Serena fan - I can only imagine what a wreck I would be if someone else was my fave!

Vanhool your kidding if you think serena was at 85-90%. If you mean health wise sure but if you mean in terms of actual tennis play your having a laugh. A 60% serena in terms of tennis play would win this thing.

an error on my part, it's 49-4...but still

and yes, maybe Maria has an opening here depending on Serena's health......and she can get to #1

and sure, nothing is guaranteed and all fans get nervous...I would say Serena fans have much less to worry about than other players and teams

I meant both. Sometimes injuries are obvious, sometimes not. I could tell when she lost to Ivanovic that her movement was not 100% there but it wasn't like AO 12 or 13 where everyone saw her get injured and she was taped up and hobbling around. Ana played really well that day....Serena wasn't up to par but I don't think she was at 60%. Fans saw within a few games that something was up with her movement, but non fans couldn't tell the difference. Although Serena at 60% could probably take out a lot of these women, they too would have to be not playing their best (which is entirely possible). Believe me, I'm happy to make excuses for lots of her losses, but at some point I have to accept that no player is 100% every time they show up for all kinds of reasons. To me she played well enough at AO 14 and Miami 12 that she would have beaten quite a few top 20 players, but Ana and Woz held it together and beat her.

Secret fur yeah:-)

Sharapova's shoes: she seems to have had two pairs with her at the drawing ceremony:

- one, black stilettos (the pic up top thread)

- another, flats (the "tweeting" pic, where the high heels are on the floor, beside her feet)

Now, that's what I call attention to detail.

The competition must have been awed by her visibly lugging both pairs unashamedly.

I wonder what cc0 thinks of Serena's dress this time? Personally I think she's looking fiercer than Tyra and Naomi combined and she know it!!

The "tweeter" pic seems to have been leaked by Sharapova. No wonder, she's having those legs as well as herself well under exposure and control.

Maria Sharapova tweeted her love for this behind the scenes photo from the draw ceremony on Saturday. When I asked her to explain why she loved it so much, she couldn't help but laugh. "Just because it's like a thousand words in one picture. It's incredible. Can't wait to write a book. Those are the moments where I'm like, 'Oh, my goodness. I just wrote a whole chapter in one evening.' Yeah, looked like a lot of fun, huh? Love those things." Do we sense some sarcasm there, Maria?

I HATE Serena's dress. Is this an 80's high school prom?

I don't like the dresses for any of the women.

Halep looks like one of those little trinket dolls you buy in the Netherlands, Radwanska looks like an ostrich, Sharapova's dress has that matronly schoolmarm vibe, Bouchard's dress, makeup and hair is horrible, much too harsh, Kvitova's getup is WTF, Woznicaki looks like she is going to some hipster dinner party and Ivanovic looks like she could be an escort at a player party or something.

You asked!

The girls always look ridiculous at this event. Bouchard and Ivanovic in particular are made up way too heavy.

Halep and Sharapova look great though.

Halep's dress, for more scrutiny and/or appreciation:-)

LMAO cc0!!!:lol: Has anyone ever told you you'd be perfect for Fashion Police?! I'm sure Kelly O is in need of a new co host now that Joan is no longer with us, God rest her soul.

Trouble is, both Bouchard and Halep used left thigh bandages during training in Singapore. Perhaps just protection, but ..

I think it is too late. Isn't Kathy Griffin replacing Joan? Maybe we could both get a job on Fashion Police, what do you think? ;)

OK, finally GAME ON.

Serena - Ivanovic

Strange/eerie mauve/violet lighting.

And both seem on.

2-1 Serena, on serve.

But Serena separates herself 4-1.

Is anyone watching on TennisTV? These commentaters are so annoying. They keep talking useless chitchat during play. Even on break points they just talk about completely useless stuff, like they're not even watching.

Well, unfortunately that wasn't enough for Ana, she made a couple of UE that cost her the match.
Next: Simona vs Eugenie
