Who will win the 2014 WTA Championship Singapore

The strength of Halep is that, when playing her average game, she can beat almost everyone else playing their average game.

But when she's playing a great player who happens to be playing well, it just seems that she doesn't have a final "gear" in her game that can match them. This has happened twice against Sharapova, and today against Serena.
 
Halep deserved this loss and to be fed a bagel by Serena. It should be a stern lesson to her that you don't let one of the greatest players of all time who rarely loses to the same player twice on the biggest stages back into the tournament when you have the chance to dispose of her in a match which is essentially a rubber. Stupid girl.

Serena is in a different league to Halep.

Yup, great analysis, I feel the same. Doesn't bring it when her opponent does. Still, great year for her.
 
same as it ever was, still Serena and everyone else...not one truly compelling rival for her..if Venus had maintained her health maybe she could have continued as it

Halep didn't play as well today but it was partly due to Serena zoning in the second half the match. Took it right out of Simona's hands.

Grats, Serena. 5 championships!

Better luck next time Simona.

Definitely. Wozniacki-Williams is a much better match-up than Halep-Williams. Halep caught Williams on a bad day in that first match. I doubt Halep will ever beat Williams again. Williams will be on high alert when she plays Halep on the big stage. It is very hard to beat Williams twice unless you are Venus or Henin for example and even then it is difficult.

Whats more mind boggling is that she on friday tired herself out in a three setter for absolutely nothing. In the end she lost anyway.

Your last words in that post is perfect. If you have the chance to put out the best, you do it.

soy, I think that is sort of harsh; Halep is still coming into her own, and considering the challenge of facing one of the few true legends of the sport, Halep losing to a player who learns quickly from any kind of deficit is not a shame.

It is a learning experience.
 
Personally, if I were Halep, with all great results (including on the financial side), which I'd be blind not to see and appreciate, I'd change coaches right now, as I honestly don't see any progress on the crucial technical and strategical side this year:

- STILL no slice

- STILL no volley, no occasional S-V

- not enough dropshots

- STILL no plan B to speak of (see Serena today, she applied her plan B throughout by coming to the net on each and every short ball)

- not enough coach on-court intervention to change course (perhaps Halep doesn't like that), including in today's match

just a good maintenance at a very good level, for which she should thank the current coach.

I had the same recommendation for Bouchard, even though her results aren't quite at the same level as Halep's.

Otherwise, she will continue to lack the variety of means to beat the best on a consistent basis, and will wear out her body, by her current insistance on staying parked at the baseline. She should change her style more toward's Henin's, than Clijsters'.

Am I too harsh? I don't think so. And I have had this recommendation for some time; as well, it's only confirmed by today's match.

There is a time for everything, and this is the best time for it, before putting in the hard work for the next season.

Suggestions? Paul Annacone, Stefan Edberg (even part time would help tremendously; and he might become available), Carlos Rodriguez (I know he has that academy in China, and he left even Li Na in the lurch because of it), even Justine Henin (if Mauresmo coaches, why not her? she has a tennis academy).

Now, Henin might not be available for touring as a coach for now:

Not sure how many observers saw this significant detail:

At the entrance on the court, in the tunnel, Serena didn't want to take the extended hand of the accompanying child - I guess to avoid any "softening" of her mood; the child just dropped it then; a good sign for the things to come on the court. I knew then she would be extremely aggressive

For all of you geniuses suggesting that Simona should have just thrown a match in order to knock Serena out of the tournament, how in the world could this possibly help her career?

1. It could potentially mess up her reputation.

but more importantly,

2. How would this help her mentally knowing that she purposefully ran from Serena. Most likely, she's going to have to face and beat Serena many times in the future if she wants to win grand slams and big tournaments.

If you want to be a great tennis player, you don't run away from anyone.

Those people suggesting she tank against Ana are bitter butt hurt Serena haters. You step out on the court, you are trained to play your best and to try and win each and every time. What if she tanked and then lost in the semis or finals to somebody else? Then what?

I am not a Serena hater. I never thought Halep had a chance if she had to play vs Serena for a second time. Anybody with a brain cell in his head would realize that. You are dealing with two classes of players here.


You step out on the court, you are trained to play your best and to try and win each and every time.

This is not a regular tournament with regular matches so you can't talk about regular situations. It became way more a matter of strategy in that "rubber" match vs Ana than it did about anything else. Halep had already made the SF no matter what she did. It becomes a strategy move like a chess move at that point.

So what? But at least you are taking the biggest danger by far out of the tournament. Halep had a chance to make career history and now most people out of the tennis world won't even know her name. Nobody remembers a WTA Finals finalist.

If Roger Federer had the opportunity to prevent Rafa from getting to the ATP Finals or vice versa by tanking the crucial SF match, you are telling me that you would encourage it and NOT use it against the player you like least in the fan flame war. I don't buy it. Simona has street cred now. A few of you may whine about her being stupid or making a poor decision but the vast majority of tennis fans are nodding our heads and saying, "Good for you. You knew that beating Serena a second time around would be difficult but you said bring it. Much respect".
