Draw:

REALLY strong lineup for this fairly small tournament (draw of 32). There are several strong players who aren't even seeded, like Stephens, Stosur, Vinci, Cornet, Safarova, Hantuchova and Pavlyuchenkova, Everyone is just cramming in their grass court practice I guess.

Qualifying wrapped up today and 6 1st round main draw matches were played as well.

The most surprising result was #1 seed Radwanska falling to Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 4-6 6-3 6-7(4). This is a discussion for another thread but I see Radwanska slowly continuing to fall from here on out. The other top players are too good and so is the up and coming competition.

Other results:

Kerber [5] def. Riske 7-6(6) 6-4
Wozniacki [8] def. Stosur 7-5 6-4 (Another sort of surprising results in my mind)
Stephens def. Garcia 6-2 6-4
Cornet def. Jovanovski 6-3 6-2
Vesnina def. Peng 6-3 6-4

Yeah, I don't get why more of these women didn't try to scoop up the easy pickings at Birmingham. I guess a few of them did but bombed out. Still a packed field.

I'm glad Pavls bounced Aga (no offense to Aga). The girl is so talented; she should be top 15 if not top 10 already. I wish she could keep it together on a consistent basis. Maybe she needs a new coach

There is no result from Woz/Stosur that could have surprised me (other than both of them simultaneously retiring). Happy for Caro, sad for Sam.

Nice to see Sloane win the battle of the rising stars.

After top seed Radwanska lost yesterday, seeds continued to fall today

#2 seed Kvitova squeezed by Safarova 6-1 5-7 7-6(4) but #3 seed Jankovic fell to young American Madison Keys 3-6 3-6 and #4 seed Azarenka lost her debut match coming back from injury to Camila Giorgi 6-4 3-6 5-7.

#7 seed Errani, not surprisingly on grass, was also taken out by the qualifier Lauren Davis 7-6(5) 6-2.

Other results:

Ekaterina Makarova def. Francesca Schiavone [Q] 7-5 6-3.
Varvara Lepchenko def. Shuai Zhang 5-7 6-4 6-1
Flavia Pennetta [6] Su-Wei Hsieh [Q] 6-3 6-3
Daniela Hantuchova def. Roberta Vinci 7-5 6-1
Johanna Konta [WC] def. Belinda Bencic [Q] 6-3 6-2
Heather Watson [WC] def. Tsvetana Pironkova 3-6 7-5 6-2.

C Giorgi (ITA) vs [8] C Wozniacki (DEN)
lookin forward to this one tomorrow ... caro should show she's washed that man outta her hair! :D

It was tight in the breaker and she served a double which Woz returned and she fired it skyward.

I just saw Kvitova deefed so Watson goes through on a walkover.

Giorgi is like a demon. A cute, cute demon. ;)

The most annoying thing about her is her overly demonstrative and debt avoiding dad, IMO.

Watson will think she's playing better tennis than she actually is going into Wimbledon.

but she has, remember she had to win all those challengers just to get her ranking up. she had a bad draw in paris which set her back but she will get a decent at wimbly which i think will give her a chance to go at least to the 4th round.

Let me have a little fun. One of the best things to do when you're a WTA fan is to predict failure.

Semifinals are set:

Angelique Kerber [5]
vs.
Caroline Wozniacki [8]

Madison Keys
vs.
Heather Watson [WC]

I like Kerber to make the final over Woz. The 2nd semifinal I have no idea, but I'd like it if the British wild card Watson advanced!

Amazing opportunity for Madison Keys to take this title. I think she beats Watson and can definitely outhit both Kerber and Wozniacki, but the question is, can she hang with their consistency? Would be a tough match, but I'm hoping Keys can win her first title!

Also, great effort from Watson making the semis. I haven't seen her name around in a while, she looked to be an up in coming player along with Robson but they've been no where to be found this year.

Kerber got through Wozniacki in 3, defeating her 3-6 7-6(3) 6-3, while Keys easily handled Watson 6-3 6-1.

FINAL:

Angelique Kerber [5]
vs.
Madison Keys

A really high quality match is currently taking place between Madison Keys and Angelique Kerber. The devastating serve and groundstrokes of Madison vs the impressive defensive skills of Angelique and on grass. The best tennis is when there is a contrast of styles and both players are playing at a high level.

When Keys is good, she's really good. When she's bad, she's really bad. Hoping she pulls through on this one. Fun match, in either case.

And she wins it! Surprisingly good day for Americans, since Coco Vandeweghe also managed to win her tournament.

Yay, Madison! This was the most controlled tennis I've seen her play. If she can maintain this level this coud be the first of many titles. And she's only 19.

60 winners! I really hope she doesn't disappear without a trace, I'm looking forward to seeing her do well at Wimbledon.

Fantastic performance from Keys. Huge power and consistency from her today. Great match from Kerber, too. Kerber made Keys have to hit 3 or 4 hard shots to win a point.

While I'm very happy for Keys today, she still needs to do even better. I'm hoping that her coaches really help her to temper some of that awesome power she has. Keys needs to learn how to work a point. You can't get to the top going 100% on every shot.

But she's got a lot of time (she's only 19) and has amazing talent to build from, that's for sure.

HOLY ****, is this stat right?! Madison Keys hit 17 aces while Kerber hit 0 aces :shock::)

Go USA!

Also Madison hit 60 winners to Kerber's 15 winners, let's gooo! :)

I've always thought that Keys had more potential than Stephens, and she's finally starting to show it. She'll be #30 in the world on Monday, still has a ways to go but she's getting there. Hope she has a great Wimbledon and can build on this result!

Go USA!

Looks like she is American tennis' female counterpart to Big John Isner (albeit without the mountainous height)!

Congratulations to Madison on winning her maiden title on grass. Let's see if she can replicate this kind of form at the Really Big Grass Event next week? :)
