3-time WTF semifinalist and World No. 2 Andy Murray comes up against Spanish terrier David Ferrer in this opening round robin match on Monday at the O2.
Murray leads Ferrer 11-6 in the H2H (winning recently in the Paris SFs, last loss in 2014 Shanghai). The pair have met twice before at the O2, with Murray winning in 2010 and Ferrer winning in 2011.

Who will prevail in this encounter though?

Ferrer is going to have trouble winning a match at WTF, but probably playing well. Recent history in these matchups is quite poor (Wawa, Rafa, Muzziah). Goes down in straight sets.

I think Muzziah wins this one, but it is the next two matches that will expose where Murray's heart truly is...something tells me Davis Cup
This should depress the Muzziah:
35/2013 QF US Open Hard Stan Wawrinka Andy Murray 6-4 6-3 6-2 4.42 - 1.26
16/2013 R16 Monte Carlo Masters Clay Stan Wawrinka Andy Murray 6-1 6-2 3.55 - 1.36

The Nadal vs Murray head to head is more competitive, but favors Nadal too. Not so sure pre back surgery Murray at US Open in 2013 a great barometer, but their history shows Wawrinka plays Murray well. The Stanimal and the Muzziah have never met, so do not like Murray's chances at all.

Even if Murray tries he'd be very lucky to make the semifinals.

Personally I feel regardless of the matches and players, Muzziah's head isn't going to be in it 100% and that alone will seal his fate here. I do expect Stanimal and Rafa to qualify, now who plays Djokovic as the runner up will be interesting. This is why the Stanimal V Nadal match will have a lot riding on it.

Murray in 2. Seriously, I think that if he'd tank somewhere it would be Paris-Bercy or Shanghai. He's not gonna go awol in the first match of the WTF.

2011. First Monday. Ferrer defeated Murray. History to repeat?

And then he retires from the competition just like in 2011!

I don't know, I think he will win his first match, but is going to lose vs Wawrinka and vs Nadal I don't know.. Anyway, I think that would be a sourprise if he has a good-great tournament.

"Even if he tries."

What this supposed to mean? If he is not here to try, then why he didn't sit in his home enjoying live action on TV?

Practicing on clay before playing WTF doesn't strike me as trying very hard to win WTF.

Federer did practise on clay last year IIRC and still made SF dropping minimum number of games at RR stage in his entire career.

and whether Murray is trying hard for winning WTF or not doesn't matter unless both Djokovic and Federer decides to skip the tournament.

Im not to worried about Murray's performance here. If he can win 1-2 of his RR matches then great but its likely that he's done enough to secure #2 with DC still to play and im sure he is very much focused on that. I think he'll beat Ferrer in straight sets tho.

Somehow Murray has to just make the semis and then we'll see....

Ferrer starting well, hit a few nice angles and gets a BP. Murray not starting badly per-say but prehaps a little too casual right now but im sure he'll get going.

Watching live now. Murray more or less playing close to his own 2015 best level. I will be genuinely surprised if he doesn't make semis here playing good enough.

Murray loves to play cat and mouse. Ferrer seems to be intimidated by Murray's coverage. If he snaps out from under Andy's spell and cuts the UEs this will be a close one.

Murray toying with Ferrer. Ferrer is happy playing cat and mouse game. He never wants to break that glass ceiling....just happy where he is now.
Murray's favorite mouse, but this one usually gets away:
Remember seeing this match live and so impressed with how Murray was able to toy with Nadal in the points and rallies. A shame this does not work so well usually and never with Nole and Fed.
