he just hasn't had a bad loss in a slam except for 1 in the last 10 slams or so. so whether consciously or not, he does turn it on in a different way. and to some extent, he's been doing it at the WTF as well (two semis, a point or two away from the final last year)

Slams are different though. They can allow Wawrinka time to get in a groove because they're BO5 and there's basically no danger of losing in the early rounds (however since the 2013 AO he has lost in the 1st round to Hewitt at Wimbledon 2013 and GGL at RG 2014). That's washed up Hewitt, don't forget. Right off the bat here, he's playing Nadal. It's a lot different.

No way, Federer would prefer to play them in this order IMO: Ferrer, Wawrinka, Murray, Nadal. Federer completely owns Wawrinka on hard courts, he has only ever been able to beat fed on clay. Nadal gives him more problems than any of them even on hard courts.
