I heard that too. A very stupid thing to say. I mean he could have said that the match would have been close or something like that.

OK, so I saw the score and the comments about how badly Wawrinka played. Did Nadal look good, or was it hard to tell because of how badly Wawrinka played? Color me curious.

Rafa was solid throughout the majority of the match. Started a bit slow, but found some good rhythm from the baseline. All he really needed to do was keep it in and Wawa would eventually miss. Or hit a winner, then miss a couple more times, lol.

The first set was normal, fairly competitive, and Rafa won 6-3. He had one particularly sick volley I remember hours later. But just not enough tennis played to appreciate his level.

Problem is that I think I'm one of the few here on west coast so different timing. It's way too early to sleep now. Seems many Novak fans Europeans rambling in here being over tired.

After the first 30 minutes or so, Stan was serving at lightning pace (similar to when Kim Clijsters would go into her deer-in-headlights mode), spraying errors, and appeared to have no interest whatsoever in the match. Facing such competition, it's difficult to gauge Nadal's game.

I have no investment in Nadal, but I have to admit that the guy looked good to me. I think it's the best I've seen him look all year. He had some really good gets and was super consistent. Nadal basically did nothing but frustrate Wawrinka to death. I don't know what others saw, but after Wawrinka lost that first set and then immediately got broken in the second set, I thought he totally gave up. He was barely even walking into position to hit a ball and shank it out. He was totally defeated.

I'm no expert on Nadal, but it looked like plain-old Nadal to me. Super-consistent, makes his opponents hit like three or four would-be winners in order to get a point, and grinded his opponent into the ground. Not much else I can say about it.
 
Damn it. I had to miss the match and hoped to catch up on a great one. Instead... :( This performance is nothing new, but it still hurts every time.

Congrats to Rafa. From the sound of this thread, it seems like he played a great match.

Wawa goes off the rails all the time. When he is off its a sorry sight. I doubt it was because of lack of interest though. He just isn't that great of a fast HC players.

But the WTF isn't that fast any more. It's much slower than it used to be and people are saying it's slow as mud this year. It should be ideal for Stan.
 
Now I wonder how things have panned out if Nadal had one extra points in each of the first set tie breakers both at Rome and Shanghai. Al both places, Rafa lost tie-breaker and then match after losing first set in tie breaker, after having set point.

Seems like mental strength is not something swiss people much endowed with to go along with their talent.

It is first match of this WTF that I watched and I am little surpised with the bounce of the court. I expected it to be fast and little skiddy. I know this match is not right barometer, but some of the forehand Nadal hit was just gorgeous. He made ball just spit after bouncing in some of the forehands. Some of the forehands were hit with so much spin that Waw couldn't catch them even ball had landed well inside service line and that's what i have earlier said as well that Nadal doesn't need to hit as deep as Novak or other players to earn a winner. Spin does the trick for him. However, when this spin is not there or surface is not conducive, same shots simply sit up in the hitting zone of hard hitters.

He likes the high bounce, just like Nadal. Slow and low (which is what this court is) is good for Djokovic and Fed.

We also forget that Stan is now an old man at 30 (older than Nadal), so expecting day in day out consistency which he didn't have in his younger days is probably too much to ask for.

After the Fed-Djoker match , there should be more clarity on how things will pan out (since we will know who tops that group). If we assume Djoker tops and Fed is second, Murray-Nadal match will be the tiebreaker for who avoids Djoker in the semi.

Every match Nadal wins, is either because the opponent was injured, or had a previous round tough match, or scheduling inconveniences, or choked, or didn't care, or bribed off by the Toni mafia or the light saber wielding Dinosaurs threatened to harm his family.
Literally posts the same sh1t in every single one of Nadal's match threads. More annoying and pathetic than tennis_commentator dude, quite frankly.

I get if your timing is off then that's tough to handle but he just looked disinterested the crowd didn't get there money's worth tonight which is a shame.
 
Rafa deserved to win, he was the better player. Wawrinka started excellent, broke to love, but Nadal simply broke back to love as well. From there on Rafa was quite under control of the first set, I was never under the impression that Stan could win that. The second set was just a winner-unforced festival by Wawrinka. Some nice shots, some terrible errors. Nadal simply had to play that one home and Wawrinka can be "lucky" that he didn't get warned for violating the best effort rule. He mostly refused to play rallyes by hitting the return or his next shot in the net or scoring a winner.

Just a terrible performance by Stan. And I thought that would be a super tough group, but I don't see Wawrinka beating Andy. So, Rafa and Andy are both through imo.

Actually, the O2 has always been extremely slow but with also very low bounce.

That's twice now top players said they don't know what grip they use - Federer on Sunday and now Nadal. They are not even aware that there are pre-defined grips :D
