Yeah I was hoping for Rosol to win today, but alas. Well, guess Fed has got to do the dirty work now

That match should be an indication about Federer's state, I guess. I hope he plays his best tennis, win or lose.

BTW, Sock finally holds and is on the scoreboard. A mini victory for him!:)

If Federer can't beat Berdych, he doesn't have much chance of winning this tournament anyway. I think he can do both though; this will be a good litmus test of his form.

Did you guys see that stat? Federer is averaging like 300-400 more RPMs than Nadal on his forehand, and even more than Sock as well. Equal pace to both of them as well. It was just based on the last match, I think, but still a good stat. Crazy racquet head speed from this guy at this age.

Fed always hits with tons of spin and can hit as much spin as Nadal. Usually he mixes things up a bit so his general average is a bit lower.

I hope he beats Berdych too.

Not sure about winning the tournament though. The surface and balls makes it a tough ask.

Wow, that BH. His strokes are certainly better than yesterday.

BTW, I think Fed has 2nd/3rd best chance of winning IW after Djokovic. We'll see.

The one they just showed like 10 minutes ago? Federer was at around 3300 RPM and Nadal was at 2900, unless I totally misread that.

I'm afraid beating Nadal is asking too much. I won't forget their last AO semi so easily. Everyone thought Federer had a great chance of winning and he got.. humiliated I must say.

Have you seen nadal lately? Anything is possible outside of clay.

I personally predicted a blow-out by Nadal. Federer was crawling back to his way up the rankings after miserable 2013 and I thought he was in no form to compete against still prime Nadal. This time is a bit different though. Federer is about as good physically as he can be at his age and there's a lot of uncertainty about Nadal. I think that will be a 50/50 match.

Anyone wondering what is wrong with US mens tennis - watch this. Sock, nice guy, but was done in by his junior coaches - just like Roddick, Johnson, Isner, etc - no BH! I'm sure it was great as juniors to hit bombs and FHs and zoom up the rankings. You'd think at some point they'd realize they might have a pro prospect on their hands and teach him to hit a serviceable BH. No way Roddick wouldn't have beaten Fed in a few of their majors encounters if he'd had a decent BH. And don't need clay courts to learn one on.

No way to know how good Fed is playing. This is a training match.

Yeah but that was my point with bringing up the AO match. Nadal was playing horribly up to the Federer match and then he upped his level and made Federer lower his. This happens all the time. Same with AO 2009 when everyone thought Nadal would be too tired to play. The last time Fed beat Rafa was exactly 3 years ago, here. So I wouldn't call him the favorite. Of course it's "possible" but in the same way that it's "possible" Nadal loses to Raonic.

Fed serve brilliantly today. Fed has done well against power players. Sock is vastly overrated.

Roddick's backhand wasn't great, but to compare it to an awful backhand like Sock's is going too far. Roddick's was serviceable at the tour level, at least.

I know right? I have no idea what those American trainers are thinking. Maybe bring some European (Spanish, French) coaches in there, and maybe play more on clay courts. I personally believe growing up on clay courts promotes development of a balanced baseline game, with enough topspin.

Lol no worries :). I'm just surprised that Fed's forehand is 2MP slower, I knew that he didn't have the RPM.

Nadal has been hitting big in both pace and spin since 2010 or so, and Federer's forehand has probably slowed down a bit since 2006. Still, they are very close, the difference is probably negligible.

I have no idea what leads you to believe a Fedal match is ever 50/50. Even if this was in Halle I would call it 55/45 in favor of Nadal.

This is actually a good court for Nadal and when I picture Federer and him playing the only thing I'm seeing in my mind are huge topspin moonballs going towards Federer's backhand corner, leaving the entire court open for Nadal to hit a forehand winner in.

If they play, the match will most likely be played at night, so the bounce will be a bit lower.

Mainly because I think Federer is still in decent form while Nadal seems to be more of an uncertainty. You may be right though. I'm just not sure where Nadal is right at this point.

Federer is not Federer when he plays Nadal.

He's lost the last 5 or 6 matches they played.

I still remember Fed's performance at this tournament in 2012. Wish he played like that all the time.

Anyway, Berdych up next.

It's an average. Fed mixes things up more than Nadal and Sock.

This is true but this is a forehand comparison. Fed mixes it up using his slice backhand. I guess the drop shots and all of the volleys Fed hits skews it a little bit.

I would think his average spin and mph rate would be much much lower than that if they factored in volleys and drop shots. Pretty sure that was just for forehand groundstrokes.

Well I hope we get to see the match and I hope you're right. Just don't want to get let down by a 6-2 6-2 beatdown, that's all..

Sorry, we can agree to disagree. Stefanki helped him a little bit - but for a pro it was still pretty sad. But early in his career I watched a Roddick - Safin match in LA; Roddick did not hit 1 decent BH the whole night.

Why could Agassi develop a great BH without spending time on clay? Why can the ladies? It's about reps. The junior boys are too busy ripping serves and FHs.

PS - Courier kissing Sock rear was painful. Yeah, we get that you're the captain of the DC team and word of what you say will get back to the Sock camp. But he laid it on way too thick.

Fed throws in some low powered junk balls to disrupt rhythm etc. that skews the average speed a bit.

I don't think they've factored drop shots and volleys in.

Well, usually Fed v Nadal is very close even though Nadal wins most of the time. It won't be one-sided, that's for sure.

I think you're all forgetting (kind of at least) that both Federer and Nadal have some serious work to do for the match to even happen personally. I think it will happen this time, but I'm just saying they have formidable opponents coming up. A Raonic-Berdych SF shouldn't completely shock anyone at this point. If it does, that's your fault.

It would be relatively surprising, but not shocking.
