Tbh Chanwan I think there's a slim chance that Djokovic could still win Cinci but he'll have to wait until Federer retires for it to happen.
More than 50 % might be stretching it for Cinci, but he should get more (final) chances nevertheless. He just needs to avoid Fed and Murray there... (just kidding)

Am I the only one that got a weird feeling from Federer's victory speech & celebration? I think it's the 1st time we see him go back to his team right away after a victory to hug and then kiss his wife. Even his speech wasn't the usual stuff, especially the I don't know how many times/years I'll be able to come back here. I don't know, it sounded like he was near retirement or something? I was surprised to read that he considered retiring after the DC cup at the end of 2014. To a lot of us, it's something we're not looking forward to, but perhaps the end is near?

I am pretty positive he'll continue on at least until the end of 2016. He has Olympics in mind and that's why he and Stan are playing DC tie. Unless a really bad injury hits him, I think it's safe to assume he'll be on tour for the whole of 2016. After that, if he still feels he can win, I think he my play on but that's just too far ahead.

It looks like there are some strange 'blemish' on all GOAT's resume and maybe Djokovic's will be missing trophies from RG and Cincy. He still has plenty of chances left, but there is a decent chance these two tournaments end up eluding him forever.

I think and hope you're right.

Thoughts on today's match
- clutch serving throughout, both on first and second serve. He wasn't bombing unreturnables, but he was setting himself up nicely
- the forehand these last two matches and this tournament in general. Wow!
- the backhand, very stable and solid - able to hit it DTL as well as angled CC and in general hang pretty well vs. Novak with it. Again, wow!
- overall baseline game, considering it was Novak, I was very impressed.
- net game, what's there to say? Incredible lunge volleys and overall, super solid. A couple of lucky net cords too, but hey, it happens.
- ROS - some trouble on Novak's first (especially on the BH), but great on the 2nd. And he hit what, 3 clean return winners in the match?
Was surprised and impressed by how often he went for the half volley return vs. as good a 2nd serve as Novak's. And it paid off more often than not too! And probably contributed a bit to the DF's from Novak.
- BP's. Well, it's Fed. Novak played great on most of them, especially in the first. Fed should have gotten a 2nd break in the 2nd, but luckily he didn't need it.
- tactics. Superb mix. You could also see that Novak got confused at times on the 2nd, because Fed made a move towards coming in and then decided to stay back (either because his ROS wasn't good enough or just to confuse Nole - it worked).
- love his game on faster courts, it really allows him to play the way he wants and, quite literally, have the match on his racquet.

On Nole:
- was quite impressed how he stayed with a Fed playing that well in the first. Not sure anyone but a Karlovic on fire would have gotten to that TB.
And until Fed ran away with the TB, I very much feared this would be yet another one of those matches
- had one poor service game to go down a break, but other than that played his best match all week imo.
- like Murray yesterday, he had a much harder time dealing with Fed's 2nd serve than normally. The surface, Fed doing more with it or Novak's return being slightly off? Perhaps a bit of everything.
- as always, extremely hard to put away. He faltered at the start of the 2nd, but was pretty close at storming back.
- he remains the favorite for the US. And what a season he's having!

That's it.

I think and hope you're right.

I am quite certain about it, although it is very much up to Fed to call it a career any time he wants to. You need to play at least on DC tie to represent your country in the Olympics the next year, so both Fed and Stan are playing in the playoffs. That shows they will play in the Olympics, which takes place, what, after Wimbledon, I guess? I don't think Federer will abruptly retire in the middle of a season. We may see Federer in 5 more slams and may never see him there. Hope he gets his no. 18 soon.

I can honestly see him playing a fairly full 2018 if his body is up for it and he's still top-5 or top-10 material. He loves the atmosphere and everything about tennis. And just as he's happy his daughters are seeing him play now and will probably be old enough to remember it, he might wanna do the same for his boys.
We'll see, retirement is hopefully not imminent either way.

"It was right tactics for him. I knew coming into the match he was going to be aggressive. No question about it. So I tried to handle it. I did well until the tie-break in the first set. After that, he was just the better player." - Djokovic

Yeah, props to Nole for a gracious comment. He's very magnanimous in defeat and is by far the best loser of the top guys. He's really matured in how he handles losses, total respect for the attitude he has.

As for people suggesting Fed might retire... no way. Why should he when he can still summon up such magical tennis as today? And it's not unprecedented that he hugs his twins and Mirka in the box after a big win. He did so in Madrid, 2012 after thrashing Berdych. Fed's girls were at all his matches this week and it was the first ever they have attended his matches from the second round to the final (he said that to Gilbert post-match).

Sampras would SLEEPWALK through these grinders on grass, hards and indoors. He would have nothing to worry about.

Sampras' wimbledon titles would be between 8-10 and USO titles between 8-10 in this era with maybe 3 AO titles and a few good runs at the French. Maybe 1 French Open title
As long as Fed doesn't win The OPen, its all good. He can have his Cincy title. Thats the last of the fast courts and the only place he has chances anymore. He can't get cakewalk freebies off his serve any other place except Cincy
So how is Sampras gonna win all that when cincy is the last of the fast courts and the only place where he can get freebies off his serve if he played in this era?

Federer undefeated since 34th birthday! This win confirms #2 seed for USO which could prove crucial. He will be seeded within top two for four straight GS tournaments at the age of 33-34, must be another record.

First, congrats to Federer for this win. As a fan, I'm mighty pleased. I'm glad he stopped the bleeding. Losing all the big finals to Djokovic since 2012.

I hope that will motivate him even more.

I see some posters became unhinged after Federer's win. That's what happens when you're a bandwagoner and support players not because you really like them, but because you hate a certain player.

Anyone else noticed that some of Federer's biggest haters (also Nadal " fans") jumped on the Djokovic train since he started winning more against Federer?

I don't think it's far-fetched to say they became Nadal "fans" because he was beating Federer.

Wonder what will happen when Djokovic can't deliver anymore. Probably burst a vessel!

Trivia- I saw on twitter that Federer has won all four tournaments where he was the favorite.

That would be Brisbane, Istanbul, Halle and Cincy.

I'm still shocked he was the favorite for Cincy. I think they switched from Djokovic to Federer after the semis.

Maybe they should make him the favorite more often. Lol.

They did switch. I bet a few pounds soon after the semi and Novak was still favored then

Haven't seen many posters here saying Federer would own Djokovic at Flushing's now. Not really looking at the bigger picture, tbh. For sure, he is a contender at the USO, but obviously a LOT has to go his way. Best of 5, 7 matches, slower court than Cinci, etc, will all play a factor there. It's just nice to see Fed winning titles whether they be 250's or 1000's.

Yea, Fed's speeches have been like this for a few months now. I'm expecting the retirement announcement in the next year or so really...:(

He keeps mentioning playing for a few more years when he's speaking. I don't think he'll retire before 2017.

He did say he want to come back and play for many more years to come, in the post match presentation. I mean, why would he say that if he saw himself retiring soon

to keep off the hounds (the press). But I do think he loves his current life too much to give it up if he can stay relevant in the game. And if it's okay with his family of course

Federer doesn't know when he will retire. He has said so plenty of times. In one of his interview, he said Mirka has been talking about him playing until the boys can watch him/understand the game.

He said he didn't know if she was serious. I think for him, it depends on how well his body holds up. I also feel like he doesn't know what to do after retiring. I mean this is his life and what he's been doing for ever. It's hard to retire. That's why most people work until their 60s or 70s!

Federer also said he wouldn't announce his retirement before hand. Edberg told him about his own experience when he announced his retirement early.

Roger said he wants to avoid the drama so I think he may just announce his retirement during his last match. I'm one of those people that will probably bawl all night.:D

BTW Djokovic played really poor today. Don't know why people are making out like Djokovic played really well. Pretty much gave that break away with stupid double faults. Federer played well and deserved the first set (and the win) but Djokovic wasn't anywhere close to his best today.
He wasn't allowed to be at his best by Fed. Under constant pressure in his service games and blown out by Fed in the tiebreaker, he cracked in a big way and probably has Fed's ego and confidence in top form for USO. Those DF's were big.

Sorry, but Federer didn't make Djokovic serve those double faults. Djokovic has complete control of his serve and he didn't play his best. To be fair, he wasn't as bad as last week.

Three Djokovic double faults in the tie breaker and two in the break game in second set is pretty unique. Just googled and in the Indian Wells Final this year he had three double faults in the second set tie breaker against Fed. Definitely not his best in those two breakers against Fed. Anyone other than Djokovic and you'd have to call a spade a spade.

It looks like there are some strange 'blemish' on all GOAT's resume and maybe Djokovic's will be missing trophies from RG and Cincy.

As if winning all Masters 1000's and Cincy is all that vital? First of all, you're putting the cart in front of the horse. Djoker is not "GOAT," nor will he ever be. And even if Djoker somehow bags 13-14 slams and legitimately IS an ATG, him missing Cincy is irrelevant. Just as Fed never winning MC or Rome is utterly meaningless. Slams cement the legacy, very little else.

The only reason this year's Cincy tournament is relevant is because a 34 year old GOAT administered a complete beat down on the the #1 player in the world who 6 years younger. 'Nough said,

Djokovic in 2 or 3, He can't win them all. What ever strategy he is using its working, this is his 10th straight final. This is more than anyone else on Tour, wake up and smell the coffee. lol

I'm working tomorrow, so I'll catch the results on AP,UPI, and CNN

Cheers

I did. It still has some flavor :)

You don't think Djokovic is already an ATG BeatlesFan?

that's a rather simplistic view imo. Have a read: http://www.atpworldtour.com/en/news/cincinnati-2015-final-federer-brain-game
"The accumulated pressure of the eight return approaches in the opening set paid huge dividends at the beginning of the second set in the Serb’s opening service game. After serving an ace to lead 15/0, Djokovic had to hit four consecutive second serves - and double faulted on three of them - to hand Federer the only break in the entire match. "
That's properly overstating it, but to say Fed's return tactics had no influence on it, is understating it.
Also, his 3rd DF was essentially an attempt to hit another first serve on his second - i.e. a 40 % chance of a DF regardless of Fed.

When Muzz manhandled Fed in Shanghai a few years back, Fed hit 3 DF's in one game. I remember I'd never seen that before, but it was the pressure of Murray killing his 2nd serve that day, that did him in imo.

There are few more things that contributed as well.
1, Novak's mental strength
2, Cincy conditions
