The first Clay Masters of the year!
Wawrinka is the defending champion after defeating Federer in 3 sets, in last years final.
Will Djokovic continue his run of dominance into the Clay season? Will the KOC win an unprecedented 9th Monte Carlo title? Or maybe a new winner altogether?...

Looks like Murray and Nishikori won't be playing again.

I'm thinking Rafa. His first Masters since Madrid last year.

I think Djokovic will not reach the final (lose in qf or sf)

Nadal or Federer will win

Anyone know if Bernard Tomic is going to play? Read a few articles saying he's likely to skip it after his wisdom teeth surgery. He's on the players list on the site but that's nearly a month old.

I also see that Gasquet, Benneteau and Kyrgios have all withdrawn.

^^Not that I know of. Yeah, it still says he is signed up. I have had wisdom teeth removed before, and it only took a few days to a week for the recovery.

Lucky you! Had mine removed 2 months ago and it took a while til I felt all good. Can't imagine being a tennis player and practicing while in pain. But I still hope he plays.

I really don't want to see Nadal winning any more Masters, clay or otherwise. I want to see Novak hold the record one day.

Were the impacted? I had two grow out, through they were nearly sideways. I had them out and was back at work a few hours later.

The other two would never have grown out. An oral surgeon went in with a pile driver, and I could not get farther than the bathroom to spit up blood for a couple days.

And that was back in around 1968. I've seldom been so sick. I still remember it like it was yesterday.

It's hard to choose. My heart says Fed, but it will probably be Nadal or Djokovic.

Yeah one was impacted and caused a lot of pain. The other 3 were taken out but didn't hurt that bad. And kudos on being able to head straight back to work!

But I read that Tomic's are infected so god knows what that feels like!

I think Djokovic and Nadal will inexplicably go out early, and Federer will beat an injured Almagro 6-0 6-0 in the final.

Wawrinka could be on the verge of falling out of the top 10 after this.

I think he will still stay at least #9 after Monte Carlo. There is around 1000 points between him and Cilic at #10 who never does well enough on Clay, let alone Monte Carlo. Dimi may get back into the top ten.

With Murray not playing, my hopes ride with Raonic! Hoping for at least a QF run from him, would even like to see him play Nadal on clay, would be the best lesson for the events to come too and good practise!

Good shot for Fed, actually. Nadal is in questionable form and Djokovic has been on a tear and might need an involuntary tank.

I don't expect Djokovic to go all out on this. He will defend his points from last year. Therefore I say Nadal with Federer just behind.

This is going to be really interesting. I think this is one of the more anticipated masters series events we've had in a while. The road to FO starts here, but the stories coming into the event have already added an extra layer to this.

I hope Federer wins this finally. Last year he had a golden opportunity and was about 3 points away in the tiebreaker before mucking it up against Stan.

I don't think Djokovic will reach the final as I don't think he will have enough in the tank and he does need a break soon.

We might have a Fedal, you never know. Ferrer might go deep as well.

This is only non mandatory Masters events on tour. Two of the four best players simply skipping it.

We might see Nadal finally regaining some form or Raonic peaking taking advantage of weak field.

I'm very unsure about the outcome of this one.

Djokovic is bound for a letdown. Nadal has been dull for a looong time, but then again he has been so dominant here. Fed has been looking quite good and will be rested, but it's super-slow clay and he is 37 y.o. after all.

Djokovic probably needs some rest, but don't you guys think he should pounce when Nadal is down, say, if they meet in a semi or something?

What if Murray had entered?

Fed is not 37 years old!!! (He's 33)

Djokovic by a country mile! He's cleaned up a lot of his game during the past year and is a real force to dominate the tour right now!

I was more impressed with Djokovic at last year's Indian Wells/Miami......

The problem for Djokovic is that he knows no matter what he does in the clay season, it doesn't help him at Roland Garros.

As much as I hate seeing Djokovic win everything since October 2014 I think he's the favorite here. Nadal will find his form for Madrid and the FO.

I think Novak is going to be too exhausted to take the title and I'm not sure if Rafa's game is going to be up to par just yet. Wouldn't be suprised to see someone else holding the trophy.

It would be kinda funny if Federer wins it, even with both Nadal and Djokovic being in the draw.

Tomic to slice everyone to death.

Serious note: Can conceivably see, Thiem making QF or another young gun making a charge.

Can't believe you haven't voted for Djokovic yet like I did

What does Novak do more to be the favourite in your eyes?
Novak's just won 5 tier 1 events in a row. The streak can't go on forever. Also M-C is not Djoko's best clay event. Rome is. I think that's where his odds are the highest in best of 3 on clay.
Nadal is aiming at his 9th M-C title! To make it a tie with RG.
M-C also has sentimental value for Rafa: it's the first master he's ever played and the first master he's won. His 8 titles in a row are a unique record. Rafa should be quite fresh after his early exit from Miami. I'm betting on him (assuming his draw is decent).
If the final ends up being Rafa vs Nole (I wish!), I'm still betting on Rafa as he will be fresher.

ETA: and that's a bit weird but for whatever reason Djoko has never beaten Fed at M-C, so if they get to meet, edge to Fed from past history I guess...
