Halep should have played out the string. If she wasn't going to even try in the 3rd there was no point fighting so hard to win the 2nd set anyway.

I don't understand why this girl has so many physical problems. She gets exhausted way too easily compared to other top players. Perhaps she should try a gluten free diet. :)

So if Bencic beats Kerber in Cinci, she'll get the winner of Cibulkova/Pennetta next. And that would be the easiest opponent she's faced in a while.

Talk about running the gauntlet

Belinda won that match outright. She was the better player on the court today. We've all seen the MTOs abused not to be skeptical of Halep. These players want to win badly and will do everything in their power to do so.

Really really impressed with BB!

...or perhaps she's not cut out for professional sports. There's always something with her. She's been trained to play as a pro, but that does not eliminate any (hypothetical) physical problems, which might prevent her from taking her career to the highest point.

The new number 12 Belinda, will play the number 11 ranked Kerber in Cincy.

That first round match should be interesting.

The final kind of sucked but Bencic was full value for her run to the title as a whole. She beat all the best opponents possible that were in her path, including the #1, 2, 4 and 5 players in the world. Fantastic run for her!

Now please, Belinda. Please follow this up with more success. Prove you're the REAL DEAL!

Guess she knew she wouldn't get to really celebrate in the final ;)

Maybe Bouchard losing to Bencic in 3 sets in the 1st round is a positive sign for her in hindsight?

Was just going to say...

I even thought that at the time, seeing as how Bencic was ranked higher than her (20 to Bouchard's 25). By no means is it a really big deal for Bouchard, but it was a decent little stepping stone for her.

I would think this would light a fire under Bouchard for a couple of different reasons -- Bencic is younger and more accomplished in terms of titles; she played a close match against her; and Bencic just won Genie's home tournament.

That's got to hurt quite a bit knowing how competitive these pro athletes are.

Maybe some motivation for Genie to get her **** together.

Agreed 100%. Hopefully she takes a good long look at the week Bencic just had.

It was so cute during the trophy ceremony. They announced "and now you'll have the chance to play for a million dollars," and her eyes got big and she said "What???!!!!" The possibility hadn't even been on her radar. :)

I hope that's not a distraction. You can guess her team (specifically agents) discusses financial plans, but still, thinking of money as part of the end-game can lead to mistakes.

it's very impressive that an 18 year old had such a run

when's the last time we've seen a teen play so well? I guess maybe Sloane at 19 at the Australian open, but of course she only won her first tournament this year.

Yeah I hope this serves as motivation and incentive for Genie. A bit of jealousy and rage would even be good in this case.

Halep is the Nishikori of the WTA. Fragile, always something going on.

Absolutely. Every week it seems like there is something else wrong with her. Didn't she just have a month off?
What a disgusting display from her to retire at 0-3 in the third set! Not professional at all.

What are you talking about? Kei tanked that second set. Stevie Wonder could see that.

Still better than not finishing, especialy when even if possibly hurt/struggling with heat you were well enough to fight like a dog to win the 2nd set, and had no new injury/problem since then other than a can of ass whoop being opened on you early in the 3rd.

True. Not finishing when you are so close to the end is worse. Not impressive from her at all. This is one of the many reasons I have trouble warming up to her.

Her general behavior during matches is irritating, especialy when things aren't going her way as today showed.

I don't blame her for retiring. It was pretty obvious in the 2nd set tiebreaker that she was not going to be able play a 3rd set.

Why fight so hard to win the 2nd set then? If you already know you aren't going to finish the 3rd no matter what. I don't know, I just find it all kind of confusing.

I thought this was way better than Sloane's run. Sloane beat a bunch of nobodies along the way to meet Serena, who was hobbled and still took the first set no problem. Serena almost took the second set, too. Even when Serena's back started spasming and she was serving 80 mph first serves, Sloane appeared sullen and unwilling to accept the gift. Finally she pulled it together and won in spite of herself.

In contrast, Bencic was focussed and there to win, great court coverage and court sense, ready to take advantage of a less than stellar Williams. It probably helps to be coached by the Hingis camp, who I would imagine have been crafting a Serena strategy for years. Interestingly, the Stephens and Bencic scorelines were identical 3-6, 7-5, 6-4, but the they were very different matches in my eyes. Good job Belinda!

I don't know. I guess because she's a competitor. I guess she felt she could win the 2nd set, so she was going to give it her all and I'm sure she tried to win in the 3rd too but it was just obvious as an observer that she had absolutely nothing left.

Well, you don't know until you try. Perhaps the break between sets was actually bad for her. Sometimes you can just power through, you go into some primal survival mode, but when you stop and reset you feel it and can't get it restarted.

I agree. She's a mental midget with a bad attitude and temper at times when she is being outplayed.

I blame her for retiring. It is not a cool thing to do at 0-3 in the final set. If she knew she was going to retire why not do it straight away? A professional athlete couldn't play three more games? It wasn't like she sprained her ankle or had some sort of more serious injury. She had some sort of niggle but she could have kept going for three more games. I find it very unprofessional.

Belinda does seem to have the attitude that she believes she should win these matches, and she truly believes she belongs at the top of women's tennis. There's something about that attitude that's different than a lot of the other young ones.

Still her game doesn't look that impressive to me from the 2 matches I saw compared to say a Madison Keys or even Genie when Genie was playing well.

She has made things more interesting and I look forward to watching her compete more in the future. I want to see how she matches up against the power players when they are playing well.

But it seems like it is always something with her.

Yes, that's true. I just try not to judge them (athletes and their MTOs, retirements, potty breaks, etc) because I really don't know what's going on. Maybe, in this case, she thought she was going to faint or puke or something embarrassing and thought the retirement would be less drama queen and keep the focus more on Bencic than herself.
