I thought this was way better than Sloane's run. Sloane beat a bunch of nobodies along the way to meet Serena, who was hobbled and still took the first set no problem. Serena almost took the second set, too. Even when her back started spasming and she was serving 80 mph first serves, Sloane appeared sullen and unwilling to accept the gift. Finally she pulled it together and won in spite of herself.
Agreed; it took injury for Stephens to lurch across the finish line against an injured player.
In contrast, Bencic was focussed and there to win, great court coverage and court sense, ready to take advantage of a less than stellar Williams. It probably helps to be coached by the Hingis camp, who I would imagine have been crafting a Serena strategy for years. Interestingly, the Stephens and Bencic scorelines were identical 3-6, 7-5, 6-4, but the they were very different matches in my eyes. Good job Belinda!
I'm not sure a Hingis strategy would work, considering how Serena was one of the players responsible for driving Hingis out of the sport for several years.
