Stories of Nadal's demise are greatly exaggerated

There has been some sort of recent trend, led by MichaelNadal, to suggest that Nadal is completely done, has declined hugely and has no chance at RG.

Yes there has been a decline. But that doesn't mean the end, certainly not of winning the French. Federer declined years ago and still nearly won Wimbledon aged 33 and 11 months.

Yes he isn't as good and that is why he loses to Wawrinka in a night session in Rome, he would have won that match any year up to 2013. He now needs things, like conditions to be in his favour, previously he didn't. But still, he wins that match if it takes place during the warm day.

But the conditions at RG are perfect for him and if it is sunny Nole will have to play his best to beat him.

Do you really expect anyone else to get 3 sets? They can, but how likely is it really? He is the DESERVED 2ND FAVOURITE, but sill low odds. It would be a pretty weird sport if the 2nd favourite couldn't win...

Yeah, you are right, there are no data after 05-13-2015, so they probably just restored the old version with the DB backup.

I would like to salute your excellent grammar - it's a rare treat to see.

Nole has to be favourite, then Rafa, then the rest.

Great to see the old board back *salutes mods*

This is going to be one of the more exciting Roland Garros in a long time. The field is wide open.

This is not a dig at Nadal, because regardless to happens he's on of the greatest player of all time. It's no longer debatable. But for the first time in a long time is not the automate favorite; and that's a good thing. But that does not mean Nada can't win it.

I forgot about the weather factor :) I hope it's hot as balls.

yeah because that's what this forums all about...

Back on topic - really hope for some sort of crazy upset where both Nadal and Novak go out early ish and we're left with a "could be anyone" type scenario.
This year has Djokovic written all over it and whilst he's in phenomenal form it would be really nice to see someone else lifting a trophy for a change...

coric/kyrgios/thiem - step it up!

I can imagine that, I get the feeling it could happen. All this pressure on Djoko to complete the career slam cause now would be the best chance. Who knows what could happen??

I can predict an upset but I don't expect it.

If Nadal gets to the semis, then I think all bets are off. Even the so called pundits will start backing him.

I remember after he won last year, BG and a few others were saying," I'm surprised we doubted him". They all bought into the Djokovic hype same as this year.

True, but this year Nadal was absolutely horrific during the claycourt season. Last year Nadal was going into the french open after having a pretty well contested final with Djokovic in Rome unlike this year where he got crushed by Wawrinka. Also, I don't think I have seen Nadal play a worse match on clay than the Madrid final this year.

But still, I totally agree with you. All bets are off if Nadal roars into the SF.

Do you get the feeling that if Djokovic doesn't win it this year, he might never win it? I mean how many chances do you have to win it, especially when the stars have seemingly aligned in your favor. Rafa suddenly very beatable on clay, and his ranking has seen him fall out of the top 5, meanwhile Djokovic is sitting pretty at 1. Unless he somehow gets Murray in his half, and Nadal in his quarter, I can't see a better opportunity for him. Though he is 0-6 against Rafa at the French Open.

Same thing with 2011 as well. Everybody backed Novak going into that French Open, especially since he beat Rafa in Madrid and Rome.

I definitely get that feeling. Nadal is only 1 year older then Djoko so one would assume they would retire relatively close together. I don't buy into the hype that Nadal is done forever, I think he's done for this clay season though. So this would be the best chance for someone to win the french. Fed got lucky in 2009, this is Djoko's best chance.
There is a chance I guess in a few years for Djoko when Nadal loses his A game (like Fed has in recent months) but who knows what future stars could dominate clay by then?

It really could be now or never for Djoko and that might put pressure on him.

We talked about now or never back then in 2012.

I think he will have a lot of chances and there a lots of finals incoming.

True. I am sure he will get there avoiding all of Murray/Djoker/Stan/Nishi. Once he gets there, he can take anyone down.

it all depends on nadal, if he were to decline then novak would sooner or later lift the trophy.. Nadal keeps djokovic from winning as he kept federer from winning the french open.

The difference between 2011 and 2015 is not so much with Djoko, it is with Nadal who in 2011 made all clay finals, winning 2 of them. No comparison with what happened in 2015.

OK, so, toughest possible draw for Novak (revised):

1- Almagro
2- Monaco
3- Fognini
R16- Monfils
QF- Nishikori
SF- Murray
F- Nadal

Toughest possible draw for Fed:

any

Any one following the qualies? Matches have been suspended due to rain. Same thing happened yesterday. I don't think they've completed all the men's round 1 matches.

Hope rain doesn't disrupt the main draw matches.

Is Raonic definitely playing?

Not heard anything. The draw isn't out yet and unless someone has spotted him practicing at Roland Garros I guess we won't know for sure until the draw comes out on Friday unless he makes a statement beforehand.

Rublev to defeat a BIG name (Nadal, Ferrer, Federer, Murray or Djokovic)

In a year or 2 maybe. He has the game but not over 5 sets .. yet.

Rublev isnt playing this years French. He had a WC into qualies but he had to pull out bc he also got a WC into Geneva this week where he won his first rd match.

He took Cilic to 3 sets yeaterday, even had a match pt in the tiebreaker. Went down 6-1 in the 3rd, however.
