How good does Mahut have to be to even compete with these players who all play the same because the courts and racquets favor their homogenous style? He plays the most difficult game in the most difficult of conditions and still forces soporific baseliner Simon to play at least four sets on clay. That's talent.

will have to be 5 if Simon wants to actually win the match!
 
Simon what a sportsman, he knew ball was in and missed
Mahut got screwed and fired him up to hit some serious FHs
love that he took the set from the pusher from hell
even if pusher wins in 5 he is as always limiting his chances
for success in further best of 5 matches

I agree. France has some good history in tennis and their players are fundamentally sound in general. I guess Mahut and Benneteau are two classic serve and volleyers with good tennis education.

Because even though he has all the favorable "weapons" to triumph in this single style borefest that tennis has turned into, he's still not talented enough to beat a player whose game is the opposite of what is taught today.
 
I don't think Simon will win this match. His serve isn't reliable and Mahut has the upper hand. He knows he just needs a set for the win.

This would hold true if he hadn't already beaten plenty of players who are at least as talented as Mahut.

Mahut is forcing Simon to play 5 sets playing like McEnroe. None of these other players you claim to be at least as talented as Mahut play a game which is like swimming against the tide. Mahut has to be supremely talented to be able to do this. Even when racquet technology didn't favor baseliners as much as it does today, it was extremely difficult for a serve and volleyer to win a clay tournament (Noah managed to do it but it certainly wasn't the norm, Becker couldn't win a single clay tournament, McEnroe and Edberg were close to winning RG but couldn't; Sampras only managed to win one Super 9 on clay). That just gives you the measure of how much more difficult it would be for a serve and volleyer to even reach a semifinal nowadays.

This match could have just been over in three sets. Mahut was pretty clutch on those set points Simon had.

Inductive reasoning. The fact that other players chose a different game plan does not make them less talented than Mahut.
