Peak version of Stanislas Wawrinka from the 2015 Roland Garros final when he blasted Novak Djokovic off the court against peak version of Rafael Nadal at 2017's Roland Garros final. Who would win if they both played each other at Roland Garros?

I think it's fair / correct to say that Stanislas Wawrinka wasn't at his peak during the 2017 Roland Garros final. He was nowhere near as good as he was 2 years prior. He wasn't in the same form nor was his condition at the same optimum level. In his previous round match, he played Andy Murray in a very long and grueling 5 set match which fatigued him significantly to the point where he wasn't as fresh for the final as he was in 2015.

If Wawrinka's opponent in 2017 final was Djokovic then there is a good chance Wawrinka would up his game once again. He likes Djokovic's low balls to his backhand. But Nadal hits very high balls with a lot of topspin which limits Wawrinka's aggressive game. So the truth is Wawrinka would never get a chance to play on 2015 level against in form Nadal on clay. It is all about matchups. So Nadal in straights.

Stan has a slim chance against say, 2014 Rafa. Generally he's going to lose in straights. Wouldn't be at all surprised if Rafa and Fred maintain their strangleholds on their respective fortresses.

Nadal.

I'm with the Nadal fan above me^. I think he's a favourite for next year's French.
Who knows about 2019. Maybe Thiem will have developed by then.

It would have been a great match, but Nadal would have won in the end. I really hope Nadal wins again next year, if only to stop Thiem from taking it. That kid has talent but he shouldn't get a grand slam until he's got a plan B, it'll teach bad lessons to the up and coming juniors.

Rafa in 3 (closer sets than 2017) or 4. Very bad match-up, especially on clay, even worse than Fedal.

Rafa in closer 3 sets or maybe 4. But would definately be a better and more even match than this year's final.

I don't agree. Nadal in peak form on clay is way better than peak Novak on clay and Wawrinka just couldn't do anything against him.
Maybe the 5 setter with Murray did tire him, that is a possibility--he still would have lost. Stan didn't look tired to me. It didn't seem to matter who Nadal was playing at RG this year, the scoreline was always a variation of 6/1, (or 6/0) 6/2, 6/3. It was his strongest RG ever.

Wonder why you're bringing this up now though?

Nadal in 4.
Nadal knew what to do this year, to stop Stan getting into the match.
Stan in beast mode in 2015 would be tougher though, although Djoker is a different matcup and had no plan to stop him and just hoped he would drop off - he didn't.

Bull in 2 close and one blowout set. Stan would have all kinds of trouble with the backhand because Nadal's spin makes the ball jump high and away. Djokovic's backhand would do the same but it has less spin.

Nadal would have won. Prob in 5. Stan was Brutal in that 2015 final however Nadal would not have played passive low confidence tennis like Djokovic did. Also Nadal would not of had to play himself in QF and a 5 setter with Murray in the SF before the final. Djokovic almost got it into the 5th in 2015 as well.

Nadal wins in 3 again. This is a terrible match up for Wawrinka and Nadal just doesn't allow him to play on that court like Djokovic did. He completely took the match out of Wawrinka's hands. He was able to build and build, feel confident and just let his shots flow in that 2015 match, where I always felt that Djokovic allowed it to happen. Nadal would not allow it.

You are with this excuses again. Beating Nadal in 2015 was probably easier than beating Gasquet. And don't even tell me that 1/4 final took something from Djokovic. The match was NID, Nadal was dominated by FOGNINI on clay that year. His worst tennis ever. And Murray? Lmao, this match was NID too. Djokovic won all his sets easy, just lost a bit of concentration in the middle and that's it. Lol...So I will ask you again-was there (in your opinion) a match where Djokovic played good and lost?

Rafa in straights. An absolute nightmare match up for Stan. There is no way he'd have been able to play the type of tennis that he did against Novak in a different match up, so its a pointless question. In fact, the guy Stan actually beat in that 2015 final would have a much better chance of challenging 2017 Rafa than Stan himself. It is all about match ups. 2011/15/16 Novak against 2017 Rafa would be a more interesting question. Would still have to favour Rafa playing at the level he demonstrated at RG but it would be a good one. I think even the very best version of Stan imaginable gets waxed in straights. He just can't play that style against Rafa on clay. It is an impractical hypothesis IMO (admittedly no different to most other hypothetical threads on this forum).
