Well we are getting pretty close to the last slam of the year.
Will Serena win all 4 slams in one year and complete the Calendar Year Grand Slam for the first time in 27 years?
Will Halep/Wozniacki finally win a slam?
Can Sharapova win the title (and maybe defeat Serena, LOL)?
And then a bunch of other WTA players who have a 1% chance at winning.

Can't wait to see the dominant poll results
Only one big withdrawal so far in Peng Shuai who was a semi-finalist last year.

Who will have a big breakthrough? Bencic, Bacsinszky, Stosur, Keys, Bouchard?

Draw comes out in about a day or so

Really hope that Bencic/Stephens do well.
And Stosur has at least one more hurrah.
And hope Bouchard can at least do something.

Looking fwd to the draw.

Lol, I had a dream this morning that Wozniacki won the USO. I guess it was preparation for this thread.

Would be happy if Belinda could continue good form and match or better her QF run from last year.

Get the feeling Serena is going to have one of those matches where her serve goes walkabout and she gets taken out.

Can't see her being knocked out in 1R or 2R cause it's so rare for her. 4R/QF are my biggest concerns for her.

Semi-Pro
Seeds in Serena's @usopen quarter: (8) Pliskova, (12) Bencic, (15) Radwanska, (19) Keys, (23) Venus, (29) Stephens (31) Pavlyuchenkova

None is a threat for an average day Serena, but any can beat Serena in her day off.
Note she'll potentially meet Sharapova in the SF. That should be fun to watch.

Yes, Serena randomly gets the most difficult draw, and Djokovic randomly gets the easiest draw.

Please spare me. And I didn't ask for your opinion, thanks.
Too bad, you post on a discussion forum, you're going to get a discussion. You are the same type of person that flips a coin ten times heads, then declares that probability is a farce and that Bernouilli didn't know what the hell he was talking about. Professional statistical inference be damned, it seems you have it all figured out don't you? How nice. Take off the tinfoil hat why don't you?

Whatever. I don't have the time to debate with an internet smart aleck. Have a nice day!

Where's TV to tell us about all the potential obstacles she sees standing in Serena's way and that she still doesn't see her winning the title? :D

Vika has a decent enough draw for this. It's not an easy draw with Halep and Kerber in her quarter but she's not in Serena's half for once. Halep should be the biggest obstacle but if she does win that match-up, which I would probably favor her in, I expect her to reach the finals.

I actually don't think Serena has that hard of a draw. Lucic Baroni is a tough R2 and potentially Sephens a tough R3 but after that it really isn't too bad with probably Radwanska, Bencic/Pliskova, Sharapova for R4/QF/SF. If Serena gets to R4 unscathed I don't see that line up troubling her at all.

Coco Vandeweghe will be an interesting/potentially dangerous meeting in the 3R if she can beat Stephens. Coco reached the Wimbledon QF but just missed out on bring seeded at the US Open. If she defeats Sloane I think that Serena v Coco could be a great match

At first I thought you were making a grim joke about staying in somebody's house during the Open, but you mean the 'ole, "NOBODY beats Vitas Gerulaitis 15 times in a row!" deal. Well, she already had a few chances to imitate him, and it didn't end well, lol...

I do believe it could be the first time they would meet in NYC.

Something I've been thinking about is what will be the mentality of a player who'll have a lead against Serena in this tournament. Besides the standard collapsing against a dominant #1 player, will the thought of "I could be the one to stop the Grand Slam!" cause players to freeze up from the get go or unravel in worse ways than usual?

Yeah, probably. But there are a few players who don't give a f**k so hopefully one of them is firing on all cylinders

Anyone but Serena

It seems unlikely Maria will even make it to the SF coming into the US Open with no recent matches under her belt.

Yeah, I forgot to mention that little detail. No match play for months, all that shrieking in humid NYC, probably the first person to take her to three sets will see her wilt.

Jesus Christ, YOU'RE still around?!?! Whatever happened to the pledge to "deprive" us of your presence forever? Still waiting like a dog for scraps at the table for yer shrieking Ice Queen to cash in, huh? Been a long wait, hasn't it?

Serena's draw doesn't look that difficult to me.

2R: Lucic Baroni who knocked Halep out of French Open 2R
3R: Sloane Stephens who knocked Serena out of the Aus Open few years ago and almost took her out of the French.
QF: Bencic who Serena just lost to last week
SF: Ivanovic or Sharapova both in Serena's part of the draw.

I like Lucic. Didn't she do well at the USO last year, beating Halep and going reasonably deep. Too erratic to trouble Williams but won't be frightened of playing her. She's overcome too much to be where she is and seems to genuinely enjoy being able to play- that must ease some of the tension.

Lucic Baroni may be a danger but I doubt it. Serena ain't Halep.
As for Sloane Stephens, Serena has a 5-1 h2h over her and since that one AO where Sloane beat Serena, Serena seems to be on high alert when she plays her.
LOL at Sharapova or Ivanovic
Bencic could be her biggest threat but the last time they played Serena's serve was off. I have a feeling it won't be as off this time.

Could there be an upset and Serena will be knocked out? Of course. But for me, her draw doesn't look bad at all on paper.

I'm not saying that any of them will beat her. Just saying that her draw does look bad on paper
Guess we won't agree though

Yeah, I can't agree with you about that. She has winning h2hs vs Baroni, Vandeweghe, Sloane Stephens, Madison Keys, etc. The two most dangerous players for her, Azarenka and Kvitova, are on the other side of the draw.

Sadly,I think Kvitova is only a danger to herself. I'd love to be wrong though.
