Flavia wins 6-4 6-4. NATO power!

Yes.

So, the players who could cause Serena troubles are falling: Bencic and Cornet in the first week and now Stosur. In the end, it will be probably Azarenka again in the final against Her Majesty and will give the crowd a good entertaining match with the Queen winning 2 sets to 1.

Regardless of the winner, this has been a good tournament for the ladies tour so far. I'm really enjoying it!

Stosur was never going to cause Serena problems here. First off she was never going to make the final, so her chances vs Serena are irrelevant. She hasn't been to the quarters of a slam in 3 whole years now, and this was only her 2nd Round of 16 at a slam in the last 12. So the idea of her beating Pennetta who owns her, Kvitova who owns her, and then probably Azarenka who owns her (people who owned her even in her prime, which is clearly past now) all in a row to even make the final potentially against Serena is pure fantasy.

Venus is a significantly tougher opponent for Serena than Bencic given Venus's form here, regardless of Bencic's win over Serena in Canada. Even if Serena does win relatively comfortably vs Venus, this will still be true. That Bencic got so badly overpowered by elderly Venus (even the Estonian who lost 2 and 0 to Vee was holding her own much better in the rallies and in the power game) indicates she has a ways to go before beating someone like Serena in a slam which is much different than a regular tour event.

As for Cornet, yeah she is a tricky opponent for Serena, wont deny that, but as if she were ever making the FINAL of the U.S Open to even play Serena.

I remember reading about that. I could only lol.Talk about getting ahead of one's self. Am I right? :D

She has self-generated issues about Serena, and allowed that to be her focus, instead of what remains of he game.

Same here.

Wall to wall battles, thrills and heart from the start. So much for other TT members' sweeping criticism of the WTA and this USO draw.

Stosur was never going to cause Serena problems here. First off she was never going to make the final, so her chances vs Serena are irrelevant. When is the last time she was past the round of 16 of any slam? Heck I don't follow her closely but I don't recall her even being past the 3rd round of a slam for quite awhile now until here.

Stosur's USO results every year after that one title:

2012: QF
2013: 1st RD
2014: 2nd RD

She improved a bit this year, but as you point out:

The idea of her beating Pennetta who owns her, Kvitova who owns her, and then probably Azarenka who owns her (people who owned her even in her prime, which is clearly past now) all in a row to even make the final potentially against Serena would be comical.

...yet somehow, she was creating strategies for defeating Serena. That is rather single-minded...obsessive.

Yeah you would think she would focus instead on the more immediate task of creating strategies to try and beat any of the 3 women who have made her their personal asswipe over the years, and were doing so years ago when she was a far better player than today. That would make more sense than thinking about a potential final which for her was a very long way in the distance, and would require some herculean effort to even reach (and which Serena wouldn't even be guaranteed to be on the other side either).

I wouldn't call her Serenas asswipe. 8-3 h2h is better then Stosurs h2h against Flavia. Besides Venus stosur is the only player to defeat Serena twice at slams.

I wasn't referring to Serena. I was referring to the 3 women she would have had to beat to even reach Serena- Penetta, Kvitova (likely), Azarenka (likely). You shouldn't focus on Serena when you have a monumental task of even potentially reaching her that you should first concern yourself with, particularly when you haven't had a good slam result in forever.

I am watching 2 matches at once now and entertaining some friends but Petra doesnt look great. I could see her crashing out to Pennetta next if she survives this, and don't see her beating Vika should they meet in the semis.

Good win from Petra playing to her seed/ranking, she was on her game. Side not she looked a little off, in the game and less endowed too - must be a dress trick lol. ;)

Quarterfinals are set!

Serena Williams[1]
vs.
Venus Williams[23]

Kristina Mladenovic
vs.
Roberta Vinci

Petra Kvitova[5]
vs.
Flavia Pennetta[26]

Victoria Azarenka[20]
vs.
Simona Halep[2]

She is from a former warsaw pac country im not sure if i should support her. I need to get with pirates of the Caribbean for that.

All former eastern European countries joined NATO except Russia, Belarus (Russian wannabes for the time being), Ukraine (soon), Serbia (because we bombed the crap out of them and took Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Slovenia, Macedonia, Montenegro, Kosovo out of Yugo).

Azarenka is the only enemy of NATO left in the women's draw :D

Those who were saying Vinci has no place in a Slam quarterfinal are clueless. She's playing very well indeed. And what a testament to the endurance of these Italian girls that there's two of them still in the tournament.

Weirdest games(wo)manship of all time: Mladenovic juggling (sp?) the ball. Loses the point, though.

In the end, it will be probably Azarenka again in the final against Her Majesty

Don't know why, but this made me LOL. :D

Me too.

Too bad they didn't put Vee on the other side of the draw; we could've had a Williams-Williams final. But I think a lot of people are expecting Halep to win that match against Vika just because she's ranked second; I personally think they're underestimating Vika's ambition.

Not counting Venus out (yet) but I'd like to see a Mladenovic vs. Serena semis. Vinci just doesn't have the firepower needed to abate Serena's game.

But at 4-3 in the second, Krista's isn't looking very good at the moment.

Vika said her arms were bandaged because the shirt she was wearing gave her a rash from rubbing on her skin so she bandaged them.
