If Serena wins tonight, surely even you will think that she's gonna beat Vinci in the semis TV? ;)

Do not be so sure. Remember Jaime Yzaga? I'm sure our dear 90's Clay crashed his skull into a wall to induce amnesia about the guy, but no one on earth thought he was going to defeat full-power, USO defending champion Sampras. But it happened in the 1994 4th round.

The point is as I've said before--anything is possible in sports. No guarantees, and if the Yzaga example was not powerful enough to convince, nothing will.

TV please stop! Vinci's chances of beating Serena are as miniscule as it gets. I said from the second I saw Serena's draw that I didn't see what the fuss was about her quarter/half and the only dangers to Serena lurk in the bottom half with Kvitova or Azarenka. I mean seriously, come on!

Is this a joke ??? why is everybody in the commentary booth talking like this William sister match will be a Great match or something ? in the past, it had always been boring Unforced Error fest and we were all forced to turn off the TV. and Tonight we already know the outcome of the match. Venus will tank this match and let serena win, of course. Venus knows that if she wins tonight, then she would be taking away Serena's place in history of Calendar year Grand Slam. and Serena won't get this chance again. so Venus will do what a good sister does. and we will be forced to endure another Obvious outcome.

I think it is more about Serena doing what a good sister does and not humiliating her sick aging older sister. I agree we will be forced to endure another obvious outcome though.

What will be interesting though is IF the match gets Really really close like 1st set tiebreaker or 2nd set tiebreaker,,,,,What will Venus do ?? lol. how do you throw the match without making it look like she is throwing the match..............?

Who was Yzaga? No one gave him even a particle of a chance--not just against some random Joe, but Sampras who was already the best player in the world, and of his generation that early on. Yet, "Jaime--who??" shocked the tennis world with a 4th round upset.

No impossibilities.

Dang I am working today :( Surprised to hear about Kiki's level of play. I remember her as having a big serve, power game, net skills, but also inconsistent and choking. Sounds like none of her positives on display, only her negatives. Is she trying for controlled aggression or am I thinking of the wrong person?

Gosh I wish Belinda Bencic would've beat Venus. At least we would have excitement for tonights match to see if she could upset Serena tonight again. It would definitely be more anticipating than this match, which anyone living in reality already knows it will be a non-event.

I'm extremely excited for this match and honestly believe it can go either way. Obviously Serena is more likely to win given their current career statuses.

This is interesting. Of the 4 semi-finalists, usually you'd face 3 seeded player to reach the semi's, potentially 4 if unseeded (Vinci).
Yet this is what happened
Serena faced 2 seeds; (19) Keys and (23) Venus
Vinci faced 0 seeds
Pennetta faced 2 seeds; (22) Stosur and (5) Kvitova
Halep faced 2 seeds; (24) Lisicki and (20) Azarenka

I guess that's what happens 6 of the top 10 all fell before the 3rd round.. Pennetta actually had the toughest draw. I take back what I said on her

Dellacqua/Shvedova into the SF at the US Open! Amazing!
Only their 7th tournament together!
They won Premier Mandatory Madrid
2R loss in Rome
French Open Final!
Wimbledon Quarterfinal
Toronto 1R loss
Cincinnati (Premier 5) Final!
And now US Open Semi-final!

Match made in heaven!

(4) Dellacqua/Shvedova will face unseeded Vandeweghe/Gronefeld
Whilst top half SF is (1) Hingis/Mirza against (11) Errani/Pennetta

Singles semifinals are set:

Serena Williams[1]
vs.
Roberta Vinci

Flavia Pennetta[26]
vs.
Simona Halep[2]

As Aussie Darcy pointed out, Pennetta is also in the semifinals in doubles. Great tournament for her!

Vinci truly has faced a bunch of nobodies (Mlandovic may be a somebody someday). The other three have faced slam winners (Penetta faced 2), with each facing a former USO champion or finalist. So....that's something :) Vinci is super lucky. I don't think she "has no business" being a quarterfinalist, but a semi is a fortunate result for her. Still, she does have skills and has won doubles slams, so congrats to her. If she somehow beats Serena I will probably vomit or drown in my own tears. Or vomit after nearly drowning in my tears.

How are your nerves holding up Vanhool? Only two more matches to go! :)

:D I'm holding up. I've been unnecessarily worked up in every match, but it makes it more fun. How are you doing so far? Perhaps we can take some deep calming breaths together :)
I'm doing fine thanks mate but I daresay I'll be feeling differently as it gets closer to the weekend! Here's hoping our favourite players prevail as they have done so many times this year. :)

Don't even suggest such a thing. If someone like Vinci reached a slam final I would cry, not to mention the fact that it would stop Serena from her calendar year grand slam.

Side note, does it annoy anyone when the News/WTA call it a grand slam? They said on the news last night "Serena Williams is in with a chance at winning the grand slam. And i'm like "Do you mean the calendar year grand slam? Because a grand slam can be just one slam like I say Sam Stosur is a grand slam champion as she has won one of the grand slams. I'm probably wrong but I think it'd be easier to say calendar year grand slam!

Actually I was always under the impression that when one refers to a grand slam it mean all four slams. So I would say that Sam Stosur is a slam champion as she has won one of the grand slams. Serena Williams is a grand slam champion and has a chance to win a calendar year grand slam.

Awful scheduling should have played the women's semis early today instead of the pointless matches that nobody cares about.

Geez, when are they going to get into gear? The Australian Open has 3 roofed stadiums and it doesn't even rain there like at the other slams...

Aussie Darcy

Bionic Poster
So both women's matches are on tomorrow so now they don't get a day break. And they don't have one roof? That's pathetic! So much for people thinking it's the best slam! Australia has 3! Hell even Brisbane here has one!

Well obviously all eyes were on the Serena defeat by Vinci.

But Dellacqua/Shvedova defeated Vandeweghe/Gronefeld to reach the final. Their 2nd slam final in only 8 tournaments together I think it is. They'll face number one seeds Hingis/Mirza
