Anyway, Serena is in to the final. One win away from the Serena Slam and one step away from the CYGS!
Watching Serena hit shots toward the middle of the court and seeing Maria not change direction in the slightest (similar to playing virtua tennis) was bewildering. You'd think she'd at least try and switch directions and force Serena to play one more shot. At least it was closer than expected.

Always such a ridiculous match between Serena and Sharapova. Every single meeting looks the same. Shara trying to outhit Serena. It's the only tactic she has tried and it has failed for the last 11 years. But maybe, maybe next time it will work!!

No, she shouldn't have said anything at all then. You can't say someone has a better brand than someone cause they're white instead of black. Maybe more marketable, but I'm still iffy about that word as well. At the end of the day, the reason why Sharapova makes more money off the court is because she is more privileged. If you can't say that, don't say anything.

Yeah, I'm guessing all GS wins of Serena over Maria would've gone to her instead, so that would make it 11...
Kind of how many slams would Federer have (including CYGS!) it Nadal didn't exist, or how many Nadal would have without Djokovic there.

It's a shame that she doesn't have a great rival though. Imagine how great it would be. Like a Chrissie/Martina thing but with Serena and some other player. That's what women's tennis has been lacking since the 80's in my opinion. We can say "Serena is the greatest" or "Graf is the greatest", and that's ok, but it doesn't inspire me as much as a good rivalry. There's a reason why Mac/Borg, Chrissie/Martina and Federer/Nadal are indelibly inscribed in collective memory. I love Sampras but my favorite part of his career was when he faced Agassi at the majors, sometimes winning and sometimes losing.

Not just against Serena, Maria's groundstrokes have looked weaker than they were for quite a while now, honestly this whole year Sharapova has looked worse than before.

I'm actually really looking forward to the final matchup. It helps that Muguruza is a potential rising star in her first Slam final who has also already beaten Serena at a Slam before, and laid a beating on her like we haven't seen happen to Serena in a LONG time at that.
I want Serena to win but it could very well be a passing of the torch moment. Despite some mental hiccups in her match vs. Radwanska, Muguruza looks really good.

Mugu will be nervous since this is her first slam final. She won't sleep well and she'll be sleepy on Saturday and lose. Slam finals are very rarely 3 sets.

First off, She never said Sharapova had a better brand because she is white, that's what you made of it.
Second, the reason Sharapova is making more money off the court is not per se because she is 'priviliged' as you call it.
Yes, she is probably more marketable, but her team has put a lot of effort into Sharapova's brand and frankly, she seems more open to being used for endorsements anyway.
I'm pretty sure that if Serena wants to, she could endorse a lot more products.

It WAS Serena-Henin, in my mind. The problem is that rivalry didn't last nearly long enough. Henin took the break from tennis and then still retired early after her 2nd go around. Women's tennis in general was actually great in the early 2000's when we had the Williams sisters and Belgians (Henin and Clijsters) at the top of the game. For a time there it was those 4 always getting through to major semis.

Muguruza is not a joke or practice session. Serena might be the favorite, but no one should underestimate Muguruza--or risk facing the losing end of a match.

Yeah, well. In my mind, the best rivalry in tennis is without a doubt Evert/Navratilova. No other rivalry even comes close. And it's distressing to see people discarding this era as weak (it may well have been overall, but not for both of them when they played each other) when the same can be said about almost any other era where one or two players dominate the game (which is almost always). Anyway, this is way off topic so I'll just end it here.

Yeah, gotta admit that great rivalries can be more memorable. On the other hand, I find it incredible that Serena managed to win slams while battling successive 'generations' of great opponents: Hingis/Capriati--> Davenport/Venus--> Clijsters/Henin-->Sharapova/Azarenka. Mostly though I find it impressive that she has managed to maintain hungry and improved her game when she got older.

Mugu is one of those hot and cold players. She flopped the grass season early at Birmingham and Eastborne. You never know which Mugu will turn up.

The Pulmonary embolism and the loss to Razzano really woke her up. If you've watch the documentary of venus and serena you'll see where the motivation came from.

Yeah, but most of her wins came early on, when she had peaked and the WS were developing. Once they got more experienced, MH cook turns getting her ass kicked by them and the other two Big Babes at the time-Davenport and Capriati-which explains why she went the last 1.5 years of her "reign" at Number One winning zero slams, and which, IMO, contributed heavily to the long time her "foot injury" took to heal.Meanwhile Hingis has a 6-7 record vs Serena (and 11-10 record vs Venus).

But i'll most likely be a better match than todays snoozefest. Even as a serena fan myself got bored of that match. Been there done that.

Hingis was past her prime and still beat Serena AND Venus at 2001 Australian Open.
That was just before Serena won the Serena Slam.
Hingis was almost retired when Serena equaled/hit the lead in their h2h in Scottsdale and Miami 2002 (and Hingis retired in 2002).

Uh, what? Venus won the 2001 US Open. She beat Serena in the final, who beat Hingis in the semifinals.

The final was venus vs serena where venus won the title withought dropping a set.
Maybe you're thinking about AO. And serena choked that match away after having match points.

Yeah, it's also what impresses me the most about Federer. I don't even like him per se, but after winning that much and breaking all records, to still want to improve your game by hiring Edberg and be hungry to win more slams at 34 with 4 kids is amazing. 99% of players would say:"you know what, I have won everything, have all records and nothing more to prove, I will keep playing for fun for a while and then retire".
Compare that with say, a Monfils who seems happy to just coast along on his talent, satisfied with winning matches here and there and making good money. Not saying that that is wrong (it isn't, especially if he's happiest that way), but it's such a stark contrast.

It sounds cliche but you really have to LOVE the competition. You have to want to win so badly. That's part of what separates good players from great players. There are some really talented people in every sport or walk of life that just don't have that burning desire to win.

Yet still made AO finals from 2000-02. The competition and the physicality caught up to her. Talented player but she had it soft in 97-98 until her fellow peers came of age. And she didn't have the fire and willingness to continue. Even through tough times.
