You don't even have an argument.....
Are you seriously trying to deny the facts?-
Hingis retired in 2002, and was clearly past her prime in 2001.
Hingis beat Serena AND Venus in the 2001 Australian Open.

I'm not really engaging in your argument. I was simply correcting your errors, which you still refuse to acknowledge.

You said Hingis beat Serena and Venus at the 2001 US Open. That's wrong. What point were you trying to make anyway with those inaccurate facts?

EDIT: Well there's the issue. You originally put 2001 US Open and not 2001 Australian Open.

It wasn't an error, I just typed the USO instead of the AO.
Just typed the wrong one (never thought the wrong one).

Hingis was past her prime at 21 years old, sure man, whatever you say....People who actually watched tennis back then know that Hingis losing more in 2000-2002 had not much to do with her own decline, but everything with stronger opposition coming along (mostly players that could overpower her like Venus/Serena/Capriati/Davenport).

Anyway, although the H2H between Hingis and Williams can't be interpreted well (Hingis won early on due to Williams still developing, WIlliams won later on when Hingis was on verge of retiring), Hingis had more to bother her than Sharapova due to her varied and smart play.

Hingis was the greatest prodigy in history in 1997, and she went crazy after the 1999 RG meltdown. And her body broke down too.
A shadow of herself in 2001.
I guess you didn't follow tennis back then.

Yeah I see that now. Never mind.

Either way, I think the argument is pointless because Serena has nothing to prove. She's got 20 Grand Slams and counting. I don't think it matters in the grand scheme of things that she lost to Hingis at the AO in 2001, even if it was right before Hingis retired.

This is the 4th year in a row that a first time Grand Slam finalist has made it to the Wimbledon final:

2012: Agnieszka Radwanska
2013: Sabine Lisicki
2014: Eugenie Bouchard
2015: Garbine Muguruza

Can Muguruza be the first one to win?

Maybe you should rewatch those years yourself. Hingis' injuries were not interfering until 2002. In both 2000 and 2001 she actually had fine results. Apart from Dokic, you know who she lost to in the slams? Exactly, the Williams sisters, Davenport and Capriati (plus a loss against Pierce, gosh, another power player, what a surprise!).

Look, Hingis was/is a great player that could arguably cause more trouble to Serena with her intelligent play than Sharapova, but to argue that she lost to them in 2000-2001 because she was 'past her prime' is simply not true to anyone following tennis back then.

She can, but will she? I don't think so.

I'm amazed at the poll results. People are still only giving Serena 50% chance of winning Slams.

Gee those are some failed names aren't they? No offense to them all but.
Aga had a bit of success after her final but has fallen out of the top 10 this year
Lisicki has been pretty shocking since her final. Only reached one tour final since then... and one slam QF
Bouchard... do I even need to explain her results??

Was this true? I thought that was a rumor like how Nadal is always injured when he loses.

I'm a Serena fan and can't stand Pova, but I don't recall any injury whatsoever. Personally, I think she simply underestimated her, and repeated the mistake later that same year. She hasn't done it since, it ain't just 17 straight, but 34 sets out of 37 played, whew! Almost as enjoyable as seeing her get butchered is seeing the way the results send the Midas/mistiks of the board sullenly scurrying down their rat holes, lol...

Lol, Hingis wasn't past her prime or anything, Hingis was winning in 1997 because there was NO BODY there. Graf was away, there were no Williams' sisters yet, just imagine playing Kournikova at Wimbledon SF
Her first meeting with Serena was in Miami Master 1998, Hingis was #1, defending champion, Serena was some one of nowhere
Serena barely lost 6/7 in the third, I hope that would clarify something

I can't even imagine how 21 years old is "past prime." She is the same age as Venus, one year older than Serena. At least Henin waited until age 25 to "pass her prime" lol. Cornet should retire right now, because I'm guessing her prime is over too.

I felt kind of sorry for Maria today. It must be hard to keep showing up but she does. To me it's obvious her shoulder is bothering her again. I hope it's just temporary and not her undoing. I doubt she would have won today anyway, but it would be sad to see her career prematurely ended. I have a lot of respect for her for coming back after shoulder surgery and facing the competition in spite of being "past her prime."

Serena had an abdominal injury when she lost to Sharapova in 3 sets at the YEC in 2004

I stand corrected. British nonetheless.

Do you have a source on that?

Actually, I stand corrected. I had always assumed it to be a Welsh name because of the large number of people in Wales who bear the name but it does appear to have an English origin after all so I apologise to you both. Teach me to check my assumptions in future!

I was referring to her loss to Pova at Wimbledon when age 17(which Pirates claimed was because of an injury). I saw that match and saw no indication of any injury. Didn't see the year end match, so, I have no idea if she was injured or not.

From what I read Serena was barely able to serve in the 2004 Wimbledon final.

Watch the match and decide for yourself. Notice the lack of grunting on Maria's part. Hmmm....

That is crazy how Sharapova is silent to the point where she is actually watchable. I'm not sure what happened and why she starts screaming now? Maybe she found that tactic helps her game.
