Who will win Wimbledon?

I don't have anything against her but I have always said Halep vultured her way to the top when a void was created by Li Na retiring, Azarenka being injured, etc. I have never looked at the Halep game and said to myself, "boy she is something special and she will go on and win slams." I just don't see it and I have no idea what people are talking about who do see that. She has no answers not only for the bigger power players but for the better counter punchers too. What kind of sensation is that, lol.

Do you think she at least has the game to be a constant threat on clay?

Yeah, I just realized for whatever reason I completely misinterpreted your post. Sorry. I should have stated myself that I know that's not all that's going on with her. I just meant that the abdominal tear is one of the immediate issues at the moment.

For the record, I completely agree that this goes back to her loss to Kvitova last year. She was left absolutely dumbfounded and a year later she still hasn't been able to get her head straight. I think that she does have a bit of an attitude but honestly it's not her biggest issue. People need to remember that we're talking about her tennis, not her personality.

The abdominal tear is another excuse in a long line of excuses lately. There is something going on behind the scenes. It may be one issue or several. We simply don't know and we are not going to get the truth except when he hear tidbits from people like Darren Cahill who is usually a pretty honest and down to earth guy. He said Saviano left Bouchard not the other way around. I doubt he would say that on air unless it were true.

Whatever her issues are, hopefully she can figure things out and get back on the right path. Pam Shriver talked about it recently and said that a sophomore slump year is normal and that she went through it herself many years ago but if it goes much beyond that, something else is going on and that is not normal.

Fair enough ccO but I do hope Simona surprises you soon. ;)

Very fair post. I guess my concluding point would be that, whatever really is going on behind the scenes, we shouldn't just assume what's going on and lazily resort to false, contrived narratives. Then again, I'm on the internet. I should be used to this kind of behaviour by now lol.

Well, a lot of people will do that unfortunately because she is attractive and was very successful quickly at a young age. Nerdy guys who have never been laid or average/unattractive women can be very catty and envious when it comes to an attractive/successful person. It comes with the territory.

Surprises me how? By winning a slam? Come on mate! Let's be realistic and not go all Marius. ;)
I don't see why she can't still win a slam ccO - Serena won't be winning all the majors in the next few years. Let's just wait and see what happens. :)

I do not see her as a slam winner. Not even close unless she completely lucks out and has a situation like Bartoli had at Wimbledon where her draw opened up. But even a player like Bartoli had more weapons than Halep. Ana Ivanovic who probably fluked that one slam at least has one of the deadliest forehands in the women's game. How can Halep who is basically weaponless win a slam? She is a good mover and has a decent bh but lots of players have that. Nope, no slam for Halep IMO. Do I have to pull a MN and say I will stop posting if she wins a slam? :)

She's a growing work in progress, but needs to expand her use of the court.

Le Coach stopped Williams doubles. Good move to focus on singles.

Agreed. They need to focus on what could be a historic Wimbledon.

It's been said a lot but I'm really hoping for a Serena-Kvitova final! I'm rooting for Serena but I don't think I'd be too upset if Kvitova won, other than the fact that there goes the Serena Slam and chances at a Calender Year Grand Slam. So yeah, I guess I'd be a little ticked but Kvitova winning wouldn't be bad at all!

Kvitova on grass is the hardest match in tennis for Williams right now, so if that was the final, yeah, interesting match-up. The bottom half (Kvitova's) certainly took a hit today with Halep and Bouchard going out, and Keys wobbling at 2-2 in the final set at the close of play.

Serena does not have trouble with eastern Europeans. Eastern Europeans play only for money, not for art. Best players are not eastern Europeans.

I don't really consider the bottom half to have changed any. I can't imagine anyone expected Bouchard to be relevant this Wimby. Halep is a good player, but grass isn't her best surface and she'd likely would have had to get through Lisicki.

Keys appears to be very much in that "post-breakthrough letdown" phase that many tennis players have. She's a few more dopey games away from being 0-2 for the season on grass, the surface where she's won her lone title just last year.

Bouchard and Halep have had much higher peaks than Keys (Halep in particular), but they're also declining quite severely. A lot of "young hopefuls" need to regroup at this point in time...

Just made it a ton easier on Petra to get back to the final.

Seeds out in 1st round:
Simona Halep[3]
Carla Suarez Navarro[9]
Eugenie Bouchard[12]
Flavia Pennetta[24]
Barbora Strycova[27]
Caroline Garcia[32]

Not bad from all seeded players considering the WTA is usually so wild. Obviously more are going to go out in the 2nd round but hopefully we see as much of a "best on best" tournament as possible here.

Summary of Vandeweghe vs Pliskova so far: tennis balls receiving a beating.
Ya, it's Isner vs. Karlovic:

And this is kinda cool.

Sister, Sister: For the first time since 2008 Wimbledon, three pairs of sisters are into the second round of a major: Serena and Venus Williams, Agnieszka and Urszula Radwanska, and Karolina and Krystina Pliskova.

Yeah, Karolina was already in pretty shaky form when she played the first round. It seems like her good form from previous weeks has deserted her when it matters the most. Typical.

I know CoCo is good on grass, but this would be a big upset, given Pliskova's form on grass this year. But that's premature; still plenty of tennis to be played.

If Kerber fails to make the QF, and a handful of others fail to make the SF, Karo Pliskova will have achieved a top 10 rank despite never having passed the 3rd round at a Slam (and that only twice). Definitely not a Slam peaker at this point in her career.

No worries, I think Kerber has a good shot at the semis, given the look of her draw right now and her current form.

I like Kerber in the semis also. I went back to my racquet bracket and changed my mind putting her in the QF, and then I realized that she'd probably be meeting Lisicki there. Since Lisicki has never beaten Kerber, had to pencil her into the SF.

All the pigeons lining up nicely for Serena to shoot them down. At the end of the day, when we're talking about all these players not called Serena Williams, it's more about "who can make the quarters/semis/final?" and not about who can lift the title. They're all pondering like Berdych: a quarterfinal is a semifinal, a semifinal is a final, and losing a final is like winning the title.
