I said I was disappointed, not shocked. And I think she does care about these events because she rarely wins a big title anyway. There's a top 10, but only about two or three players win anything worth mentioning. Only Serena and a couple of other players would treat these tournaments merely as warm-up events (and they're not even playing them for the most part). The rest of the tour do battle in these tournaments, as they're the only ones where they can collect silverware and make a name for themselves.

Also: it's logical to withdraw due to injury or threat of injury before a Slam. But that's just because of how important a Slam is and how much they want to be part of it, not because they wouldn't love to win Eastbourne or any other tournament of that kind.

You would think that would be the case with players like Safarova and Makarova but I read recently that both admitted that it is often hard for them to get up for these warm-up events and that they are much more motivated for the slams.

Well, if that's the case I believe you. Hard to believe some players would rather have a cabinet full of nothing or the occasional runner-up plate than a cabinet full of winner's trophies.

Well, Aga looking good the last week but i didn't expect to see that. Now that i jinxed her, i'll leave ;).

I don't see much WTA other than Grand Slams. I just saw the pep talk at change of ends
from Stephens coach.....the coaching makes me cringe.

Did I understand Wozniacki right? Did she actually complain about Bencic electing to switch sides after the cointoss?

Did she ever read the freaking rulebook of her job? Winner of the cointoss chooses who serves first, loser chooses what side they start on.

I thought Caroline didn't like that Bencic was hitting her practice serves into the same side of the court Caroline was practicing hers on.

Watched the replay again. Wozniacki was serving on the Deuce side, Bencic was returning a few of them. Afterwards we see Bencic serving from the Ad side. Off camera Wozniacki must have switched sides at some point because we see Bencic returning a few on the ad side.

So I guess it's a case of "You stop what you're doing because I want to do something now". Probably already knew how the match would go over...

Fell asleep waiting for match to start. Wake up to see Belinda go up 2-0 in the third, now up 5-0 and serving for the match!

Aga about to be bagelled final set. Be chic first title to be at premier levels awesome stuff, young age! Future top player?

Ana Konjuh wins last week and Bencic wins this one.

With Garbine, Pliskova, Keys doing well the WTA youngsters seem a whole lot better than the ATP counterparts

One of the best women's matches I can remember for a long time. Match stats were amazing considering the horrible playing conditions. Bencic could be the player Bouchard should be in 2-3 years time. She has so much to improve on with her footwork & moving around the court-she lets too many balls go without really making an effort to get to them either that if she can add that to her solid style of play & power could be winning majors.

Bencic is a lot of fun to watch with her calm aggression and variety. I'm very happy to see her winning her first WTA title. Hopefully it's the first of many.

I had to laugh at Wozniacki's pathetic attempt to intimidate Bencic in their SF yesterday. It was just a shame that Bencic felt the need to apologise.

Great match. 48 winners for Radwanska is a crazy stat. She was playing well even in that third set. It wasn't until 3-0 or 4-0 that she sort of gave up.

If Bencic is the future of women's tennis, I am ok with that. She is a fun player to watch. Very solid from the ground and seems to have good instincts.

I'm really impressed time after time by how well Bencic handles her temper. She's got one hell of a short fuse, but I rarely ever see her stay negative.

i think her dad sets her straight-when she appeared to be whining about she couldn't do anything at 0-3 down in the second & he eventually raised his tone & rebuked her & then she came out & started playing great.

It goes on in all sports sadly-the funniest one was Ali Carter trying to psych out Ronnie O'Sullivan in the World Snooker Final in 2012 while trailing heavily & being totally outplayed. For the final session he did a long handshake & stare but still got trounced 18-11.

He is a calming influence for sure (I don't really understand a word he's saying except the few German words he throws in and "dobre" or however it's spelled, but his calm tone always makes me smile). They seem to be a good duo, and despite him being a typical tennis dad, he doesn't appear to be a stereotypical tennis dad.

But even without her Dad talking to her, she recovers quickly from setbacks (losing the first break in the first set, losing the second set after having break point in the last game)
