The last Premier Mandatory tournament of the year.
1000 points on offer for the winner of the tournament. Biggest chance of getting points for Singapore year end finals. Only 2 players have qualified for that (Halep and Sharapova with Serena withdrawing).
Numerous withdrawals this week from the China Open. Sharapova, Azarenka, Serena, Safarova, Makarova, Lisicki the list goes on.
So the important question is who will win?
Halep who in her past 2 tournaments has lost to an unseeded player and a qualifier
Kvitova who lost to Vinci as the defending champ in Wuhan
Pennetta who is playing her first tournament since her US Open victory
Radwanska who won the Tokyo Open a few weeks back
Muguruza who is playing the final in Wuhan
Ivanovic who hasn't had a great run at a tournament since reaching the SF of the French Open
Other players to watch out for; Semifinalists in Wuhan which include Venus, Vinci and Kerber. Stosur who was a semifinalist at this tournament last year. Bencic who has proven to be a big threat on tour.

Playing starts today.

Guess what? Giorgi's using a lot of kick serves today, hard heavy kickers. Consequently only 4 doubles leading @ 6-1 4-2 with 68% first serves in and 79% of first serves won.

And Bacsinszky takes the second after playing a much better set.

Usually when people adjust to Giorgi's shots, she has little chance of changing up herself.

Giorgi's shot is getting wild now, as usual in this situation. :smh: Should be an easy third set for Bacsinszky

Is this the only tournament on the tour giving a 1st round bye to the semifinalists of the last tournament?

What's the betting Venus will not play or retire during or before a match?
I hope not, and will be pleasantly surprised if I'm wrong.

Terribly steep fall for Dellacqua. Ranked world number 26 this time last year now in the 110s. Not because of injury just poor playing. Early exits at many tournaments she had good runs at last year, except a withdrawal at Indian Wells where she was a quarter finalist last year. At least she's now back in hrhe top 10 in doubles and playing with Shvedova again this week

OMG, is the reigning USO champion Pennetta trolling us? she is fighting tooth and nail now against 160th ranked WC!

Pennetta through to the next round 7:5 4:6 6:4, this should be a wake up call for her, there is no easy match for slam champions

First big upset. Errani knocks out Kvitova in straight sets! Not a good end to the year for Kvitova.
Other seeded player knocked out is Pliskova who lost to Sloane Stephen in straight sets!

Quite a few retirements today...
Tsurenko
Diyas
Vandeweghe
Halep

This event just lost the top 2 seeds. China can't catch a break. First Wuhan now Beijing. Ouch. Not that it matters as they can't attract the crowds

Let's be real honest, Garbine & Venus are also going to withdraw. Maybe Stacey knew exactly when & why to retire. These tourneys are becoming such a joke.

We all know about Venus' health problems, but I'd say that, generally speaking, the older players don't seem to suffer more from fatigue than the younger ones (almost the contrary, in fact). These last few years - both in the men's and women's game - have to make us rethink the whole relationship between age and physical ability. It's almost like the longer you're on tour, the better you get to know your body, and that's perhaps as important - if not more - than being "young". Everybody was injured/feeling tired in Wuhan, but look who ended up with the title. And if Vinci performs well here, perhaps what I'm saying is not completely far-fetched.

No, the simple fact is none of these players give a f*ck about these Asian tourneys. And why should they? They're forced down their throats, no one wants to be here, & this is what we get.

I don't know actual numbers, but the crowds seem to have grown since the Japan Women's Open to now the China Open. The crowd during Flavia's match against Han Xinyu seemed pretty good - not surprising I guess since it had a Chinese player and a Grand Slam Open champ in the mix.

Halep doesn't have much motivation since she's already the top seed in the season finale.

Coco from some clips I saw seems to be tired and imploding at this point of a long season.

Can't comment on the rest but I'm sure most if not all these gals are ready to take a long break before training for next season and Aussie Open 2016.

Stosur match about to get underway against Niculescu who Stosur leads 6-0 in h2h! Semifinalist last year, hope she does well. She lost to Kvitova in the SF last year and it looked like she would face her in the 3rd round this year but Kvitova lost to Errani. Stosur defeated Errani at the US Open so hopefully Stosur can at least make the QF and regain some points. Tough 2nd round though with the winner facing Bouchard or Petkovic!

Classic fighter Stosur.

1-0 Stosur
Saves 3 straight break points in the first game. Niculescu will be annoyed.
(Not going to post this thing after every game just wanted to show)

yes the crowd was there for the newly crowned USO champion, no one had expected the hometown girl would put on such an exciting play, it's truly a surprise to them.

Stosur wins the first set 6-3 over Niculescu

Sorry to her fans but Niculescu is terribly boring to watch. So many errors, nothing special in her selection. Just never going to get anyway near the top

Lucic-Baroni defeats Begu in 3 sets
Vinci knocks out Van Uytvanc
Bondarenko up a set over Keys!

Petko v Genie up soon

Petko breaks with a Bouchard double fault. Hasn't played in a while, guess it was to be expected

Anyone else find the seats strange? They looked like cinema seats in Wuhan and these seats have enclosed spaces around them!
