2015: Year of Young Guns

chjtennis

G.O.A.T.
I think it's really premature to say we'll see a lot of young players breaking through and win slams in 2015 after only 1 day of ATP Tour. However, I think the signs are clear that we have more young players than ever who can make an impact on tour now than past 10 years or so. Coric, Kokkinakis, Tomic and Ducksworth have all just scored wins over worthy veterans like Hasse, Benneteau, Querrey and Simon. There are others like Thiem and Kyrgios, with more older and already somewhat established group like Nishikori, Dimitrov and Raonic. There are others like Zverev and Jordan Thompson, and I think ATP tour will see some new faces upsetting top 10 players throughout the year in 2015. I think Australian Open will eventually be won by one of the current top 10 players but it would be nice if some new face wins at least 1 slam this year. 2015 should be an exciting transition period.

How hateful of you to even dare to imply that anything other than Djokovic winning the CYGS and every single title might happen.

Unbelievable

No, sorry, you are wrong. Djokovic will win all the slams except for Wimbledon (will lose to Troicki in the final). He will also maybe lose one masters tournament. Also, Nadal will never win a slam again, and Federer won't ever win another a masters, Sorry. Thank you.

But disgusting underrating of Djokovic by OP indeed, Djokovic will not be beat by these young nobodies

He will win everything except AO, Miami, Rome, Slow-ris, WTF.

Djokovic has 25% chance, I think (which is quite high). :)

Nadal looks very rusty at the moment and that alone will open the door big time for the young guns. Murray seemed good v Nadal but we don't fully know how much of form he has regained yet. Djokovic and Federer are the 2 guys who still play their usual level and other guys should believe in their chances.

in all seriousness this could be a huge year for novak. if he stays healthy and motivated, he's certainly playing good enough tennis to make running the table an outside possibility. lots of stuff has to go right to win a major, let alone 4, but the potential is there in a way i don't think it really is for anyone else.

You mean like how he was CRUSHED by Nishikori at the USO?

There is a chance and honestly I'd think it'd be hilarious. For all the fuss about Rafa or Fed being GOAT imagine if Rog's level dipped again and nadal still couldn't shake off his injuries, and Novak can hold down all the young guns and steal a CYGS.... oh my. I can't imagine the type of threads that will pop up on TT.

Federer - Old grandpa
Murray - Not the same since injury
Djokovic - New father, distracted
Ferrer - Declined, usual choker
Wawrinka - Still a headcase
Berdych - Still a mental mug
Nadal - Still in his prime, no family to worry about, should dominate with at least 3 slams, just a minor surgery a while ago

So yes the young guys can step up, but the question, as always, is, will they? The Dimitrov generation seems stuck, Raonic could win a slam if he gets a lucky draw (as always), but really it's the year for the young-young guns to step it up.

Kokkinakis definitely is not ready to cause an upset v top 10s yet. He played well v Tomic in the 1st set, but just fell apart in the 2nd. Still, I would follow his progress with interest.
