Federer, Cilic, Dimitrov, Kei Nishikori, Raonic, Simon, Goffin and Tomic, Thiem, Stepanek Better field than a lot of 500s.

Recent champs include Federer, Hewitt, Murray and Soderling and Roddick. Good players win this event.

Who will win Brisbane 2016?

Fed with Tomic to have a good run.
You beat me to creating a thread for my own hometown tournament! Unfortunately won't be volunteering this year as I'm off overseas.

It should be a great tournament!

Ooh, what did you volunteer as?
Hopefully @Aussie Darcy was a better golf cart limo driver than @sureshs!:p

I was a tournament runner so just all sorts of tasks from helping the players to refilling fridges and setting stuff up. Got to see pretty much all the tennis players that were playing the competition and got a photo with Azarenka. Also I got to carry out Fed's winners trophy and put it on the stand. :D Was amazing!

What a fantastic draw for the Aussies!

Wildcard Ben Mitchell faces a qualifier
Sam Groth faces Chung
JP Smith faces Kudla
Duckworth faces 8th seed Thiem
7th seed Tomic faces Mahut then either Stepanek or Lajovic before possibly a rematch of the 2015 Brisbane international QF against Nishikori.

Some great 1st round matches.

Troicki v Johnson. Troicki was just two ranking spots away from being seeded!
Dimitrov v 5th seed Simon!
Groth v Chung
Duckworth v Thiem.

Tomic has to face Nishikori in the QF just like he did last year. Not really lucky for him. Maybe if Dimitrov didn't play so badly in 2015 he'd be seeded and wouldn't have to face Simon. Too late!
Simon has been poor after Wimbly - easy pickings for the Young Troll

Did you meet Dimitrov last year btw?

Meet is a stretch but walked past them as he and Sharapova were sitting on a couch talking to Rasheed.
It'll be interesting this year s they're both playing but seperated. It's close proximity for all players, often run into eachother and gym together.

He's moved onto greener things already by he looks of things - good for him

Federer made comments last year that maybe he peaked too soon (played great in winning Brisbane followed by Melbourne horror show). I think he is annoyed by 2015 AO performance, the biggest disappointment of his year.

Therefore maybe we will get a scratchy Fed here with an eye on Melbourne. If Dimitrov can see off Simon then I think he has great chance to beat the GOAT.

It won't matter really as he will need a lot of luck to win Australia.

Plotting the year ahead

Federer played some sick tennis last year. I was in Australia last year for the new year and went off to see some tennis in Brisbane. The whole place was insanely pro Fed when I got there, and he put on a clinic in that semi and final match. Didn't get at the chance to head down to Melbourne for AO last year though, but Federer stunk up the place down there, so...

It sure is - the latest stock of trains at least. Clearly off-peak though, hardly anyone in the carriage and he's stretched his leg out over another seat :p

Yep, I'm surprised the guy got two seats, considering how many people are in London.

Yeah - I just about manage to find a seat in the mornings, and I get on at the very first stop on one of the lines. Hong Kong and Tokyo are pretty ridiculous as well, and though I've not been there I imagine NYC can't be too far this either

Managed to catch Grigor's full practice this morning.. Nothing out of the ordinary, pretty straight forward but solid hitting. Simon, Troicki, Bellucci, and Istomin were all practicing during the same hour block so didn't get much of a chance to check them out as I just stuck around Dimitrov's court.

Looking forward to the Simon/Dimitrov match. Dimitrov hasn't defeated Simon before, but they haven't played since 2012. If Dimitrov isn't playing well, I can see Simon frustrating the hell out of him. Errors galore.

Do hope we see Tomic/Nishikori, it'll be interesting to see how the match-up goes this time as last year it was close for a set but Nishi ultimately won comfortably.

If Nishikori plays like he did towards the end of the season then Tomic can win but depends how well both of their pre season training has gone. Wish I could watch Tomic's first match but hope you'll report a minute by minute account of his match ;)

Chung - Groth 1st R a dandy, hopefully streamed

Dimitrov: tough draw. If he has't changed his serving motion and strategy in pre-season, poor traction ...

He needs better than that.

hahaha, if it's in the daytime I'll unfortunately be working :(

Doubles draw is also out. I love Brisbane cause it's a small tournament but gets big names. And cause it's the start of the year players want to play more matches so they play doubles and we see some good doubles pairings.

These include:
Dimitrov/Nishikori
Duckworth/Guccione
Dodig/Groth
Nestor/Stepanek

Will be great to see the new partnershi of Kontinen/Peers and Pouille/Simon.

First practice session for fed in brisbane. Ljubo sneaking around in the background

Some nice stuff, surreal to see Ljubicic there as his coach, after having played against him in so many matches.

Agree it somehow doesn't look correct yet but obviously fed has belief in his abilities so hopefully it'll work out fine. Ljubo always struck me as a very grounded person which I can see working well with someone of fed's standing. Edberg gives of the same kind of vibe - only looking slightly grumpier ;) and that sure worked well

Ljubicic is one of the nicest guys on the tour, and had a good reputation as someone who got along with everyone. Sometimes you need someone like that around, someone who is always giving off positive vibes.

A really awesome thing is happening in Brisbane qualies.

Oliver Anderson who is 17 and ranked 813 in the world was awarded a wildcard into the qualifying draw.

In the first round he defeated Dennis Novikov in 3 sets. Dennis was the 8th qualifying seed ranked 150th.
Anderson is now playing 4th qualifying seed Tim Smyczek who's ranked 109th in the world. He lost the first set in a tiebreaker but won the second in a tiebreaker and is up 5-2 in the 3rd against a guy who is 11 years his senior!!
