Thiem looks like he's channeling Fernando Gonzalez's forehand. Stanimal is devestating, but the Thiem backhand and forehand are a different animal (one with a ton more top spin.) Flat is a better shot on these courts, but Thiem is making up for it with brute force that shames Nadal and Stanimal. That boy is getting stronger by the minute. Look out!

Very nice comeback! He would have gone away meekly at this time last year. There is a substantial tenacity he is developing that can take him into the next level.:)
 
Well it was the first time I watch a full match of Thiem and I must say I am speechless. Beautiful OHBH to look it, varies his game pretty well, nice serve motion really fluid. I hope he goes far in AO because he might well be one of my favourites for this start of the season!

That was some insane ballbashing. Thiem's backhand looked legit in this match. Serve was big too. Forehand is always large.

I would like to see some more variety, since he has such good angles, and volleys.. However a huge win!! I'm so pumped!

Good call, the massive takeback is gonzo esque. Gonzo was nasty with his crosscourt short angle though. A shot I'd like to see Thiem develop more

It was and he got stronger as the match went on which means he's in shape. Thiem did work more variety in as the match went on. The power of Cilic doesn't allow for the normal Thiem fun and games. Thiem had a great dropper and lob and worked in some good slice backhangs. The one handed backhand was really on fire compared to what Thiem's been doing late last year. Underlying all of this is am improved precision and timing with the footwork. That is very special. Australian Open and Brisbane is slow enough for Thiem to free wheel his shots without have footspeed issues shown up. The timing of his footwork is a revelation in the making. Wawrinka when he is really on approaches what I've seen from Thiem recently (last match was even better and this was not as obvious in the just completed ball bash.) Thiem has greatly improved over the off-season.
 
I know the tennis year has started when I fall asleep and miss a huge match-up I was looking forward too. Oh well. I hope Federer 1.0 and 2.0 can make it interesting enough to make up for it.

Ya, you are probably right! If his dad leaves him alone it would probably be great for his game and mental health.
