Thanks a ton ! Kicking myself for skipping this one, it is always a good match when the underdog wins.

How fitting that a German stopped Serena from getting Steffi's record.
I myself wasn't interested in watching the final. This morning, assuming the final was already done, I went to flashscore to see if there was a breadstick or a bagel. When discovering that a 3rd set is being played right in that moment, I had no intention of skipping the rest. :)
Yes it is fitting, but Serena is not finished yet IMO.

Wow, I've just watched the match and all I can say is:eek::eek: Congrats to Kerber on a great tournament, incredible to think she's won her first GS after being match point down in the 1R. I said at the beginning of the tournament I had a feeling Serena wouldn't win but I figured she'd lose in an earlier round, not if she got to the final. Just goes to show what great counter-punching can do to an attacking player. I've also said before that winning Grand Slams always gets tougher as you get older as the nerves and pressure play such a big role. I do still think Serena will get to 22 but it really won't be as easy as many people think, not if what we saw today is anything to go by and especially not if she continues volleying like she did!

As long as i get this straight. If serena wins its a weak era. If she loses its a weak era. And if she doesnt play its a weak era. It will only be a strong era when someone else is winning all the time. Or its competative and not the same person wins all the time but then thats a weak era. Ok nevermind.

While I'm bummed that Serena lost, Kerber didn't crack under the pressure. Congrats to her. She's on a very short list of players to have beaten Serena in a Slam final.

Kerber had her moments of "cracking", but as another poster noted, she was able to regroup and put it behind her. Serena felt more pressure, and it showed in her unforced errors.

It just goes to show the difference one point can make in such a big match. Serena had a game point serving at 4-5 in the 3rd and had she taken it she probably would've been favoured to go on and win but she just couldn't get her 1st serve clicking. The margins in tennis can be really small but Kerber should be given a lot of credit for running everything down, not making any errors and never giving up.

Definitely far from GOAT-like from Serena. Losing to some no namer in a slam final. Lame

Im tired of this arrogant tub of lard being compared to Graf, Martina, Evert, Court etc.

Its insulting

She's only 1 slam away from Graf (at least spell her name right) and #3rd in the all-time list, above the likes of Moody, Evert and Navratilova...how is that insulting? 21 Grand Slam titles not ring a bell for you?

Because she's feasted on crap competition for long. And nows she struggling to beat some of the on the big stage. ROFLMAO!!!

Serena's serve, her greatest asset, just wasn't clicking today. It completely deserted her. She had game point at 4-5 in that third set, after breaking back. All she needed to do was win one point. Just ONE POINT!

Its gonna get tough for serena. She had a similar speed bump trying to catch evert and martina. She goes into her weakest major showing vulnerability. If she pulls off french i will be really impressed

Its not easy to serve awesome all the time in clutch moments. Sometimes the odds catch up with you.

Out of interest, does anyone know the last time this happened?
There is a list of GS champs who won after saving at least one MP en route to the title, they started looking at it in 2000 though. If you are asking only about saving MPs in the 1st round, it never happened before in this 16 years period. But the most recent woman who won GS after MPs down was Li Na at AO 2014.

Well, they certainly caught up with her today. I think nerves played a part too. Think back to the Wimbledon 2015 final vs Muguruza. Serena suddenly got the yips when she was on the verge of victory. She had to rely on breaking Muguruza's own service game when the latter was serving to stay in the match in order to cross the finish line.

Yep. Tons of nerves. A player like kerber can take advantage. She is a great mover makes you go for more. When your nervous going for more is really really hard. Its funny when people talk about mentally strong players. That can change from match to match even point to point.

1R? I think Serena Williams 2007. There may have been someone else since then though. But I recall in 2007, Serena was match point down in 1R. She saved it and went on to win the match and the tournament.
No it didn't happen, don't give false information bro. ;)
Serena won 3 Slams after at least one MP down, but all of those occasions were in semis.

Thank you!! This is great info. I have the same problem for my service provider's HD/DVR option, and TC is only available if I get the highest priced bundle. On a grad student's budget, I can't afford it. :( I wish we could create our own packages, on-demand style. That seems to be where things are headed but not yet.
You can blow $100 a month or more on cable and everything. I am blowing $45 per month on 18 mbit internet, but my phone bill with Republic wireless is less than $20 depending on how much data I use (sometimes less than $15). No landline and equipment. No cable and cheap smart phone with which I can talk and text all I want. $100 per month on high priced services adds up over time to a tremendous amount of money. Once you try ESPN3/sling for French Open you can explore finding a provider with ESPN3 just with the internet or keep shuffling the cheap intro deals and pay for Sling. Glad you have tennis tv. So many on this site have cable and don't know what they are missing.

Yeah since Graf, Martina, Evert, and Court would never lose to such players in slams at age 34, LOL! Graf wasnt even playing tennis anymore weeks past turning 30, tired of regularly losing to the likes of Coetzer since she turned 27. Martina at this age was losing to greats like the Maleeva sisters and Oremons in slams. I cant really speak to who they were losing to in slam finals at that age as they were so rarely making them (for the record someone like Conchita Martinez on grass for Navratilova the rare times any did make one).

Watching replay of women's final and as usual Chris Fowler is driving me nuts with his tennis match psychobabble, which just seems to be based on things that he has heard from his tennis expert compatriots and expanded on with his own special brand of b s. Blan blah blah.

An-gie, An-gie!!!! Congratulations Ms. Kerber on your first Grand Slam title. I've been reading that Serena was actually a gracious loser (or pretending to be one) at the end? If so, good for her.:) P.S. I love Angelique's outfit.

And not even he likes her anymore lol. ;)

It's her blatant attempts to put off opponents with her shrieking. When you scream half a second after every single shot, even on the easy shots, it just becomes too obvious. Especially when she doesn't do it during practice sessions.

The most hideous outfit in tennis history lost, so this is a big win for fashion.

And mad props to Kerber for keeping her nerves and not crumbling after losing the 2nd set.
