Lol, remember when Lendl was about to become Berdych's coach, then Berdych got smashed by Djokovic in Beijing? (I think, nearly double bagel) and all of a sudden Lendl was too busy :):):D
Did Lendl ever comment positively on it? As far as I understood, it was always just a wish from Berdych rather than something close to reality

What you say is true, but I'd rather stake money on Delpo in a match against any of those four than I would on Berdych in a match against any of those four. Delpo is - or was - that player that you could actually see beating them in a match. Berdych, on the other hand...
Yes, I would as well. I sometimes wonder how good Delpo could have become, if he didn't miss most of 2010, with his injury problems.
I think without a doubt, we would be talking about the Big 5, if Delpo's wrist hadn't been so troublesome. Clearly, he's got both the game and the mentality to compete with them. He reached his first top 10 approx. 2 months later than Djoko/Murray (just after turning 20 as opposed to just before).
He was the first non-Nadal player to beat Fed in a slam final. And the first to take down Fedal at a slam and that at the age of 20.

To be a bit critical as well. How is it that Delpo's serve hasn't improved in the past 2 years. He's 198, he's always had a good serve, but it def. could be better given his height. His right wrist has been just fine and suppose he's left has been able to toss the ball for most of the time? Why not get his service closer to that of Raonic (not anyone can be Raonic, but still).

Anyone has insight as to how much time he's spent practicing forehands, serves and slices the past 2 years?

You mean "Delpo", right? You wrote "Djoko's wrist".

Not sure, but there was a stat I think in his match with Smyczek, that said his average first and second serve had dropped off by around 8 mph.

Expected result. DelPo still got a lot of work to in his come back. Tough ask to get Berdych in 2nd match, however, this is bound to happen a few more times given his (currently) low rank. As he gets better he could be a dangerous early match up for a seed.

How far up does his ranking go from his 1R victory?

Will we see him in Miami? They love him there; I can't imagine they wouldn't grant him a WC if the reason he was struggling here was mental and not wrist pain.

del potro played really well for an hour until the intensity went down in set 2, match intensity will come back as he plays more.

kind question: are there any berdych fans? like, anywhere? in the world?

Probably in the Czech Republic! :D

One of my friends is a fan.

Also, here? Part of it is about who he was up against -- an underdog returning from injury layoff whom nearly everybody likes.

Hah yeah..not trying to be rude, he's just like..the skim milk of tennis players.

Two sets with different faces.
Has Delpo himself said anything about being in pain vs it (the wrist) causing a mental problem?

exactly. it should be the other way around given how much time he's had on his hands. presuming he was fit to serve the majority of the time.
