Another week, another Premier Mandatory tournament. What a week we just had at Indian Wells! Here's hoping for another good week in Miami!

The seedings were based on March 7th ranking so there's quite a difference between rank and seeding. (Vika 13th seed instead of 8th).

All the usual suspects (minus a suspended Sharapova).
Serena is the 3 time defending champ. Will she pull it off? Yet to win a title in 2016
Kerber. Since her Aus Open title she's lost 3 matches and won 1 and that was only on Fed Cup level
Radwanska. Can she build on her SF in IW? She won the title in 2012
Muguruza. Hasn't had a great year so far
Halep. Bad start to the year but reached the QF in Indian Wells. Was a semifinalist here last year
Suarez Navarro. Reached the final here last year. At a career high and won a Premier 5 last month!
Bencic. Decent form, 4R AO and Sydney SF but a few early losses lately
Kvitova. Bad year but reached the QF in Indian Wells but beat low ranked players

Other names:
Petkovic reached the SF last year. Had an on/off few months. Lost 2R in IW.
Pliskova reached the QF last year, reached the SF of Indian Wells last week.
Lisicki, Sloane and Venus also reached the QF last year so quite a few points to defend.
Azarenka. 2009 and 2011 champion. 3R exit last year but was unseeded due to injury.

Some potentially interesting match ups.
Gavrilova vs Serena 3R. Dasha has defeated top 10 players Ivanovic, Safarova and Sharapova, now her turn to play Serena.
Kasatkina vs Halep 2R. Kasatkina reached the QF of IW and SF at St Petersburg. Newcomer
Konta vs Venus 3R.

So who do you think will win?

I voted Azarenka (yes, I go for the low-hanging fruit usually because of my bad back) but I don't see her in your analysis... how's her history there?

Great comeback for Katie Swan in her match against Davis- thought she was goiing to get smoked - breadstick in the first and down a break in the 2nd when I checked, but now serving for 2nd set at 5-4. Go Katie!

ETA - She won! :)

I'll be there on Friday and Saturday, so from now I'll watch all matches with the fear of losing some of my faves before then. :) Today on the chopping block: Giorgi, who might oust herself in her match against Brengle, and Pironkova who's playing Vesnina.

Edit: Giorgi lost the first set, so I might not get to see the ultimate 'BBB' in real life.
Edit 2: well darn it, Pirrhu 'Dark Horse' is also out! Who's next, Sharapova? Oh wait.

I feel sorry for Azarenka. Has landed a shocking draw.....

Serena will take revenge for Bencic's win last year in Toronto and beat her in the final
  1. Serena - Winner (would love to see Lucic Baroni play well against her in 4th round)
  2. Kerber - Has a good draw. Will lose in 4th round
  3. Radwanska - Has an amazing draw of players who she can frustrate. Semifinalist
  4. Muguruza - will make 4th round
  5. Halep - Quarterfinalist
  6. CSN - Fourth Round
  7. Bencic - Great Draw. Finalist (L to Serena)
  8. Kvitova - 3rd Round loss
  9. Azarenka - Terrible draw. Will lose to V in the Quarters
  10. Venus - Semifinalist
  11. Stosur - Will lose first round. She is playing Goerges and always loses against "glamourous" conventionally beautiful players
  12. Svitolina - Quarterfinalist

I haven't looked at the draw but I doubt Azarenka will lose to Venus if Venus makes it that far. Azarenka beat her the last two times they played.

Hopefully it will be a Serena-Azarenka or Serena-Kerber final because most of the other mugs are unwatchable.

Wouldn't have a clue tbh. I was more looking at the bad draw she got and also could be slightly gassed out after IW.

Azarenka. She's playing well and riding the momentum over last week's big win over Serena at I.W. Serena has been having trouble winning big matches lately. If Azarenka can beat Williams in this tournament, with Serena wanting blood revenge, then the era of Serenas dominance will be over!!!! #PTL

Ordinarily I'd want Serena to win(and Lord knows it's been long enough since she last won a title) but her comments about Djokovic yesterday have left a bitter taste in my mouth so I'm hoping to see a new champion this year.

I looked quickly and it looks like Azarenka has never won IW and Miami back to back although she's won both IW and Miami a couple of times. It's tough to win IW and Miami back to back so we'll see if she can do it. Obviously Miami is Serena's to lose with all of the success she's had there.

What did she say?

She said:

If I have a daughter who plays tennis and also have a son that plays tennis, I wouldn't say that my son deserves more because he is a man. If they both started at three years old I would say they both deserve the same amount of money,"

"I have been playing since the age of two and it would be shocking to say my son would deserve more than my daughter. It is irrelevant."

"Novak is entitled to his opinion but if he has a daughter – I think he has a son right now – he should talk to her and tell her how his son deserves more money because he is a boy," she said

As opposed to what Murray said:

Britain's Andy Murray, a long-time rival of Djokovic, had said the Serbian player's comments were strange and disappointing.

Murray said over the last decade men's tennis had benefited from some high-profile rivalries, but women players were also able to draw strong crowds.

Speaking at the start of the Miami Open, Murray said women deserved the same prize money as men at all combined events.

"At a tournament like this, for example, if Serena is playing on centre court and you have a men's match with [Sergiy] Stakhovsky playing, people are coming to watch Serena," he said. The crowds are coming to watch the women as well. The whole thing just doesn't stack up – it changes on a day-to‑day basis depending on the matches you get."

I'm not a huge Serena fan but in this case she's right on the money regarding the moronic Djokovic comments. As world #1, he should have had more tact but he often doesn't know what that word means I'm afraid. Go Serena!

That's not true. Serena's dominance is over if she fails to win "slams" this year. It's all about the slams. I like Azarenka but Azarenka will need to beat her at a slam.

Yea and az does not have a history of playing really well for long periods of time. She goes on walkabouts and gets hurt

Yes, Azarenka needs more consistency across surfaces too. Let's hope she can keep up her good form because her rivalry with Serena at the top of the game is much needed.

Maybe this current team of hers can keep her on that path. I wont beleive it till is see it. She could be in india hanging out with a guru next month for all we know. I have said it before she is the john lennon of the wta.

Well, a bit of hyperbole with that post, but Serena has been feeling the pressure MORE at slams. Will be harder to beat Serena at master events, which Azarenka just did. If Azarenka can continue to work her way up the rankings, by consistently being a semi- final/finist, BEAT Serena at a slam, then I'd say it's the beginning of the end, which means a new #1. But, no, don't really expect Serena to go from the cusp of a grand slam to zero slams in one year.

Serena has been feeling more pressure at slams but it can also be said she isn't as motivated to win at events which aren't slams so we still need to see if Azarenka can beat her where it matters most, i.e. a slam. Azarenka is on the right path though and is really one of the only bright spots of the current WTA(look at the WTA top ten, it's a mess) so I hope she doesn't get injured any time soon.
