What's wrong with you? If its always been a part of the sport in one way or another, then there is no contradiction.

It is not a problem. The problem is a small group of people with misguided ideas on what tennis is, since there's no evidence from attendance, or from the sport's biggest audience--the TV audience--that says noise is a problem hurting the sport.

I would be most interested in seeing any concrete evidence saying the sport is being harmed by noise.

Sigh. The country club mentality is a sub-cultural aberration--not the mainstream. They are--in effect--the isolationist tennis version of Tea Party--who have always resented the greater body they (much to their resentment) are a part of, and they ranted about any number of things that were not then--or now a detriment to the sport.

Again, this insignificant group of ranters need to do one--and only one thing: produce any concrete evidence saying the sport is being harmed by noise.

...and I will ignore the rest of you pal's posts, since he's deliberately ignoring historical references that show a pattern of action in order to play his typical flaming games--as seen with his posts against another member on this page.
Easier to ignore than admit you were factually incorrect.
concrete evidence - Courier, Pierce, Seles did NOT play professional tennis in the late 70s/early 80s.
You are WRONG WRONG WRONG.
Your definition of flaming is any one proving you WRONG which of course you will ignore.
A bigger woman would admit to it. You are not that woman.

Does there need to be concrete evidence that something unpleasant is unpleasant? Who prefers hearing Sharapova and Azarenka yelling to not hearing them? I don't think it requires much discussion.

Again, this insignificant group of ranters need to do one--and only one thing: produce any concrete evidence saying the sport is being harmed by noise. If no such evidence exists (and has not through the careers of noisy players throughout decades), then one cannot try to inflate the alleged unpleasant quality of noise, and its equally alleged effect on...exactly how many tennis fans?

To be fair, wasn't Aga's upper arm/shoulder taped during Miami? I seem to recall seeing it. But I do agree it sounds fishy. You'd think she'd be a bit more interested in defending her Katowice points at least, given her battle for number 2 with Kerber.

LOL. She just won the IW-Miami double, a feat only accomplished by two other women and she should be concerned about some nothing tournament in Poland? Her ranking will take care of itself soon enough. She has no points to defend and she's the best player in the world at the moment. She should concentrate on trying to play better on clay and try and win the FO with the momentum she has going.

Well, it's a universal truth that listening to someone yelling is more unpleasant than not listening to the same person yelling. Regardless if you're a prince or a pauper. It's such a self-evident truth that nobody has even thought about producing a statistical analysis of it.

What? I'm talking about Aga, not Azra. Read more carefully before rushing to LOL next time.

While nobody really 'likes' the hooting and howling of tennis players I also do not believe it is significantly detrimental to the sport as to drive away potential viewers; at least there is no evidence to support this. Some of the most popular players on tour, Nadal, Sharapova, Serena all have loud grunts, and that doesn't seem to matter one bit.

Do I wish tennis players in general would stop shrieking? Yeah, probably, I find it irritating at times and I see absolutely no value to the player outside of intimidation of the opponent. But I don't think it really harms tennis' success and popularity in the grand scheme of things.

Mattek-Sands/Safarova win the doubles. They also completed the Indian Wells/Miami back to back.
In fact everyone did. Djokovic, Mahut/Herbert, Azarenka, Mattek-Sands/Safarova.

BMS won IW with CoCo, not Lucie. Insider or one of the accounts tweeted how long it's been since someone pulled the double with different partners.

Can Vika win the French open ??? she is the Hottest player right now. but is she comfortable on Clay ???

She actually played pretty well on clay last year but ran into Serena in Madrid and Rolland Garros. I give Vika a good shot at the French this year and at a good clay season in general.

It'll be interesting. If she does do well in Madrid and Rome, I'm going to abandon my skepticism in re: her winning FO. Of course, I'm keeping my fingers crossed that my girl Serena comes back better than ever. :)

True--there is no evidence that noise drives away viewers, or harms the sport. The complaint is more bitter ranting than anything else.

Agreed.

Agreed.
Where is the evidence that the ridiculous shrieking attracts new viewers?
Outside of the major tournaments how many tournaments sell out or at least 70% ticket sales?
Yes, marquee names like Sharapova, or past beauties like Kournikova, put bums on seats. That I grant you, but Sharapova has been booed at for her excessive noise.
And if it were not a problem why have the WTA said they are trying to combat the shrieking?
Where's the evidence that tennis is a growth sport?

Many T.T members say they don't watch when Sharapova, Azarenka or some others are playing, due the the high decibel levels. It is fairly obvious that many fans of tennis do not watch these matches. It's a definite earsore and turnoff to some.

That said, the banshee like shrieking of Sugarpova and Azarstinka is like music to my ears.

I think a worse eyesore is having children follow players around with towels and umbrellas as if they were their servants. Sure makes tennis look like an elitist sport for the rich.

And to think the players didn't have chairs until 1975 at Wimbledon. :)

Just wondering what's happened to Hingis/Mirza recently. I thought they were the dominant team in women's doubles?

It was becoming a bit much. I'm glad there's more competition again. Tee hee.
I wonder if getting so close to the record for most consecutive matches won knocked them back?
Hopefully they will come back stronger and not break up. I love seeing Hingis play doubles. And it's refreshing to see what a brain and guile can do on a tennis court.

^hingis/Mirza got close to the record of consecutive wins? I thought they only won 40 matches in a row? Martina and Shriver had 109!
You're right, I'm wrong. They were chasing ......

Mirza and Hingis had started their win streak in September at the US Open, the first of nine straight titles. If they had won the Qatar event they would have tied Natasha Zvereva of Belarus and Czech Jana Novotna's 1990 mark of 44 consecutive wins.

The longest women's doubles win streak is 109 matches, set by American pair Martina Navratilova and Pam Shriver between 1983 and 1985.
