That serve needs serious work, and we both know why.

Yes, but its not going to get better unless Rafa is truelly pressured. Monfils returned it well towards end of 2nd catching Nadal by surprise. He won't hit the serve harder unless he has to. He'd rather have a little longer rallies and wear opponent down. He upped the ante enough with Murray to get the job done. I don't like it, but if he is having physical issues hitting that big serve best to just get first percentage up high.

Fair enough. That could be said of any of his matches though. I've probably overreacted here given that I know that this forum will go bonkers after Nadal wins when it's actually quite obvious that he's not "back."

Well, this match he was able to flash a bit more it seemed. But of course, the rest of the clay season will be very telling and I agree that Rafa is still not fully back, and he may never be. But at least he's improving and going in the right direction. Best result for him for almost 2 years now. That's still something.

I think this was easily one of the best matches of the year, at least so far. Terrific stuff from both players. Really glad to see Rafa win another MS-1000, could signal a turn around for him. I thought he played well, even though they're was a few hiccups. Monfils is a tricky opponent for most, so I'm glad to see Rafa prevail.
