it was humid there today and has only been in the 60's this week, definitely was playing slow....seems like the whole clay season in recent years has been cool...can't remember many hot days even when they get to Paris
I just have a hard time watching this stuff. I watched today really probably the first clay match I have watched 75% of in two years. I didnt even watch hardly anything last year. But different strokes for different folks. Its not for me to decide. I just get bugged when people come on and claim that all surfaces are like clay. They dont watch tennis when they say that.

couldn't get that big one in, did kind of give up on it...but I don't know that it was the wrong move..maybe the double fault on set point in the first scared him off...still hit some 130+ attempts late...but it's very flat and inconsistent, hit and miss...he's no Isner or Karlovic with it
You can always rely on Gail to go full ****** in a match.

I found that match hard to analyse - I feel Rafa should have won more easily and played it quite safe at times. Or maybe I'm not giving enough credit to Gael?

It's kind of funny in a way how Djokovic has worked so hard these past two years to get the Masters record only for Nadal to equal it just two weeks later. Still, I can't really begrudge him the title seeing as Novak had won 10 of them since 2014 Madrid!

But I'm hoping Nole comes back refreshed next month and saves the sport once again.

You are becoming quite the comedian my friend :)
Novak saving the sport? hehehehe course :D

Hehe, Yup, according to a lot of people thats the new thing. Wont never see a slam-winner u25 ever again, the level of the ones past 30 is way to high:p

Its because all surfaces are slow now, there is no bonus points in the ranking system, tournaments are tightly seeded with 2 times more seeds compared to 90s. Top players are more protected and average age as old as those of 60s and 70s.

What I liked about Nadal both today and yesterday (didn't watch the earlier matches) is that he hit deep with more consistency. He won a lot of points by pushing Murray and Monfils deep in the court. If he can continue to do that, he will have a fine clay court season.

Yep, but he needs to win The important points too.

I dont agree that all surfaces are slow. But I do agree with you on why the average age keeps going up. Top players are protected with the seeding system and byes, also they are in better shape.

The ITF wants to the same people to go the semi finals. Brings in more money in the short run.

I think the main take-away has to be that Nadal has won a Masters 1000 again and looks very hungry for success. Yes, his tennis CAN improve but it's been a while since he won something big so it's to be expected that he isn't totally bossing it yet, but a win like this sets a platform for him where I think it'd be reasonable to assume that he can continue to improve and grow in confidence from here. I think only positives should be taken out of his week here in Monte Carlo, overall.

Look forward with increased optimism.

No, he made the sport boring. Because he has no weaknesses unless he's injured. Fed & Monfis saved the sport because they are fun to watch. Popularity among the masses saves a sport. Nadal, Fed, & Monfis and you can probably even throw in Nishikori as fan favorites.

Very happy to see Rafa win something of value in almost two years. Hope he builds on the momentum. Had a great week. Defeating Thiem, Stan, Murray and Monflis in 4 consecutive days would boost his confidence great deal.

What happened? I didn't watch much, and none of third set. So disappointed with Monfils, just how bad did he play in the third? And here I thought he was finally going to win something.

Fast surfaces were real fast. Too fast for older guys and anyone over 6'4".

Totally agree - I just feel he let Gael into that match a lot and should have had it wrapped up much earlier - however I may not be giving Gael enough credit. I was impressed with the way he took out Andy yesterday.

Anyway it's great as a fan - suddenly really looking forward to Barca with real optimism.

Is Nadal still going to play Barcelona ???? or will he take some rest since he is getting kind of old

I doubt he can skip Barcelona since that and Madrid are his home country tournament! I sure he want to rest but he may say he is tired and Barcelona will understand! After all you can continue playing tennis without a rest. after winning a tournament and go in three days again! Too much to soon!

Eh its more what you said the second time. If slow courts always catered to old guys alot of old guys would have been winning french in their 30s. It has more to do with the seeding system and byes. Less chance of an old guy catching a hot young guy coming up early. This is why I made a post about it. People claim its a weak era cause young guys are doing nothing. The system is not set up for young guys to do anything anymore. Its not ever going back to young guys under 25 winning big tournaments.

Rafa gave Lemonf his first bagel in almost 2 years.

Rafa and his team should celebrate the victory with a meal at Djokovic's restaurant, and while he's there he should borrow his cvac so he can recover before Barca.
