2016 Olympic Tennis Tournament - Doubles

So Mirza is playing with Bopanna? Suprising since she was practically forced to partner Paes 4 years ago. I hope she does well.

Bethanie/sock, both french pairs also dangerous

The suprises of mixed

Romania gets 2 teams?? And didn't Niculescu pull out of singles citing a back injury? I don't get that at all

No Canadian team? They could have had Nestor/Bouchard...

Murray / Watson are second alternates, so if 2 teams withdraw before end of first round...
Ivanovic / Zimonijc are first.
Seriously, how did they determine this ****. How do you make it up. I assumed Andy were focussing on singles, because you can't make this up. Did they just add up the rankings or what?

Yes I read they just add individual rankings together (singles or doubles, whichever is better) to get the team ranking.

Pretty sure that's exactly what they do. It's not like anyone has an independent mixed ranking.

To Rick.

That seems just so wrong. That's why you have teams like over the hill doubles player + over the hill singles player (Ivanovic, Zimonjic) and over the hill top 10 player + random top 100 player ahead of #2 in the world/Reigning Wimbly and Olympic champ + Reigning MIXED DOUBLES Wimbledon champ

They're not continuous variables. Difference between 1 and 10 isn't the difference between 50 and 60. Makes no sense. At all. But then people just absolutely hate thinking

Women's QFs:

Safarova / Strycova (CZE)
Errani / Vinci (ITA) [8]

Muguruza / Suarez Navarro (ESP) [4]
Makarova / Vesnina (RUS) [7]

Bacsinszky / Hingis (SUI) [5]
Chan / Chan (TPE) [3]

Hlavackova / Hradecka (CZE) [6]
Kasatkina / Kuznetsova (RUS)

This tournament is just amazing for doubles. The mixed doubles is just off the chart cool. So many great matches just in the first round.

Venus and Rampras advance with super breaker triumph.
I'm still so mad about that. Rojer/Bertens were MP up, Rojer mad a good poach and Rampras totally framed that ball with the side of his racket past Rojer. So ****ing lucky it's unbelievable

Rafa very brave to attempt triple whammy and owning the job so far!

Nadal has a golden opportunity to cement his legacy as the best Olympics tennis player in world history. No other man in tennis history has EVER won three gold medals in three different disciplines, and if he does it all in the same year, then he'll be the greatest tennis Olympian for generations to come (it would be as good as Usain Bolt winning three gold medals in 100m, 200m and 4x100m). He'll win a gold medal in his 30s, which Federer wasn't able to do, AND it'd show the world just how good Nadal is in doubles (I think if Nadal played the doubles grand slams, he'd pile them up, just like he did with Roland Garros in the singles). And then Nadal would have 4 gold medals- and he'd be heading into Tokyo 2020 with the option of adding even more to his career gold medal haul.

I think it would be greatest Olympic achievement in any sport ever. That's also why I think it's just not happening

Nadal thrives on defying the odds, so I wouldn't be surprised. And I agree it would be more impressive than anything Bolt/Phelps/anyone else ever did at the Olympics, because Nadal's feat requires playing 3 tennis matches a day, every day.

Comparison with Usain Bolt? :o Bolt competes in a sport where Olympics is the highest achievement. Tennis is far from it. Furthermore the total domination by Phelps and Bolt are on a totally different level altogehter. But I agree it will make Rafa the best Olympian from tennis world.

Rafa Nadal is thrice the sportsman that Usain Bolt is. That guy can do one thing and he only has to be good for like one event per year max.

Nadal is a great (underrated?) doubles player. Would be fair for him to get a medal in that category. What's also nice is that all his Olympic medals will happen on hard court. Nice achievement for someone primarily known as a clay mogul ...

Yeah, I think he's the best player on the court. He's just a nightmare because he's holding his own pretty well at net and is just so much better at anything you have to do from the baseline.

Agreed, Nadal is an amazing doubles player. He's by far the most successful doubles player out of the big 4, winning multiple Masters 1000 titles. I think Nadal is the only player in the big 4 capable of winning a doubles grand slam. And if Federer has a gold medal in doubles, then Nadal definitely should have one. However, I think it would be nicer if Rio 2016 were played on clay-courts and Nadal wasn't injured for London 2012. Then Nadal could have become the only player ever to medal on clay, grass and hard-courts and in consecutive years, which would probably never be matched. Though medalling all on hard-courts is neat too.

Yep. Nadal is an exceptional volleyer. Not sure why so many were skeptical when McEnroe praised Nadal for his hands at the net, because he's proven that with his success in doubles.

Pospisil has just lost four consecutive points on four touches....... not good enough. Nestor is keeping the Canadians in there.
