2016 Olympic Tennis Tournament - Doubles

Wow this Romanian pair is good. Finally some heavyweight doubles action for Rafa pair!! Not very sure if they can come through. This match is tough.

Hingis/Bac should thank their lucky stars if they win. The Czechs were up 75 30 and had match point at 75 54 40-30....I sense a choke from the 2012 silver medalists

Hingis and Bac are clawing their way through seemingly on hunger, and it's getting to the Czechs...if they don't win this tiebreak I this the swiss will probably win the match. Hingis wants this bad.

And the real bad thing is Hradecka is scheduled to play mixed doubles after this match with stepanek....although maybe they'll postpone that given what's happening now because no way is she gonna get suitable rest tonight

They just won in straights, after 1 am there.

Now to try and find somewhere to watch the end of the match, as I got halfway through the third and couldn't keep my eyes open any longer!

For those that didn't...

Changed the whole match. Swiss won next two points, then next two games, & rolled in third set.

I didn't see that...I was following the match on the rio website...that's horrible. I hope that was accidental and not on purpose. If it was on purpose..I hope Vesnina and Makarova flatten Hingis in the final. Hingis certainly didn't appear all to concerned about Andrea after it happened

That reminds me of that match in the doubles semifinals of I think the Aussie open when either Liezel Huber or her partner took a ball to the throat.

Team USA is gauranteed at least 1 medal in mixed now as both Venus/Ram and Bethanie/Sock won their mixed dubs QF matches. I'm not sure who I want to see win. Nothing against Lucie and Radek but I hope the Americans and Sania win medals. If Venus medals she'll end up with more overall medals than her sister.

Marc Lopez' ranking is definitely high enough. He's 21st in doubles, combined ranking would be like 24th or something. Thing is that they put up Nadal instead of Lopez, and you can't just substitute a player
I realize you can't just "sub out" one player for another, but once Nadal dropped out that team of Rafa/Garbine was gone.
At that point any team could have stepped in, but apparently no one was on site. Except obviously Garbine and Lopez were both there, so not sure why they coudn't enter.

You're right..horrible doubles tennis to set your partner up to get spiked on.
She should have kept her cool and finished the game/match instead of fake sobbing for 20 seconds and taking an injury time out...yeeeesh

Lopez or even Bautista Agut could have stepped in as both were clearly on site and competing. It's not like they couldn't have redone they draw before play officially started they already had redone the draw once I think because at one point there were 2 Romanian teams. Probably no one else wanted to play the mixed..which just stinks for Muguruza.

Yeah it does, just weird Lopez especially wasn't interested, if that was the case

Muguruza had teamed up with Nadal already. With Nadal withdrawing, so had Muguruza. Teams had to apply beforehand. Murray/Watson were 2nd alternates for example. Had Lopez wanted to play mixed, he'd have had to team up with a 3rd Spanish lady beforehand

Hingis has always been a classless player. No wonder why she plays so often with Paes.

I really think JohnSock is gonna win 62 62 by breaking Pospisil 4 times

Listened to an interview with Pospisil/Nestor on the bronze medal loss. Pospisil was talking of how 'we' could have played better, and Nestor kept apologizing for not serving better..... it was clearly Pospisil who didn't hold up his end. Nestor kept them in it. At almost 44 he is still a top 10 doubles player. If he stay's healthy, will we see him in 2020 at almost 48?

From what I saw of the match Nestor is still in amazing competitive shape. He still looks phenomenal and was holding his own with 2 young guns who were still tots when he was starting out in tennis. Pospisil played horribly however...I dunno if it was nerves, off day, what but he clearly was the weak link of the 2 on the day.

Could Nestor tough out another 4 years? Why not. He could stay in shape and it would just be a matter of keeping his rank high enough and proving he is still the go to doubles guy.

O yeah! Team USA soldiering on. Guaranteed a medal in the mixed doubles. Come on Sock and BMS. USA with a chance for 3 medals after all.

The 2 American mixed dubs teams will battle it out for gold. I honestly don't care who wins as I like all 4 of them and they are all amazing doubles players. Hoping Mirza and Bopanna with the Bronze.

Ekaterina Makarova (RUS) / Elena Vesnina (RUS) GOLD
Timea Bacsinszky (SUI) / Martina Hingis (SUI) SILVER
Lucie Šafářová (CZE) / Barbora Strýcová (CZE) BRONZE

Bethanie Mattek-Sands / Jack Sock (USA) GOLD
Venus Williams / Rajeev Ram (USA) SILVER
Lucie Hradecká / Radek Štepánek (CZE) BRONZE

Bethanie finally wins a medal! Much deserved for her, and congrats to sock on his 2nd.

Also, much love to Venus for her 5th medal. Team USA finished strong and goes home with 3 medals.

I do feel bad for Mirza though, although congrats to the Czechs on their 3rd tennis medal of these games.
