The greatest show on earth is nearly upon us! Five gold medals to go for in tennis!

Full entry lists here for all events

The Olympics has the opportunity to create some great stories. Nicolas Massu getting double gold in Athens for example. Nice to see Victor Estrella Burgos become an Olympian aged 35!

List of tennis medalist's competing in Rio. Would be nice if these guys didn't take the medals this time and others got that special glory.

Serena and Venus (4 gold medals each)
Murray (1 Gold 1 Silver)
Nadal (1 Gold)
Max Mirnyi (1 Gold)
Daniel Nestor (1 Gold)
Tsonga (1 Silver)

Bryan brothers out.

Baghdatis is out..no reason

Pospisil/Nester in...doubles

Ukrainian Alexandr Dolgopolov was the first tennis player to withdrawal from the Olympics citing the Zika virus. He made the decision because he already suffers from Gilbert’s syndrome, a disorder that impacts his blood and liver. So it’s likely that his recovery from Zika would be more complicated as as result.

“Still, it was a tough decision,” he said.

Ok. Which singles players are confirmed for doubles or mixed doubles? I'm talking 'bout Djoker, Muzziah, Wawa, Serena, all of them. Just want to know. Any place where to find it comprehensively.

Seems to fall under ITF jurisdiction. Believe this is the latest list, and it's from their site.

http://www.itftennis.com/news/232270.aspx

1. Thanks very much
2. WHO THE **** THOUGHT IT WAS A GOOD IDEA TO PUT GAEL GURU MONFILS IN DOUBLES. It takes only .2 seconds of watching his singles play to realise I can **** on the ground and that **** will play better doubles than Gael Monfils. And I really think that Guru is better off giving private lessons
3. Also, Bautista and Ferrer for Spain?? I'd bring Verdasco no question, or can you only bring so many unique players?
4. No mixed doubles list. I want to know if Muzziah, Wawa, Rafa and the likes play mixed.
5. Right now I'm really starting miss Rog already. Him playing dubs and mixed dubs would be awesome

what a terrible schedule. So if u play day2 of R32 you could be forced to play 4 straight days? Do they really need to cram it in like that? Isn't it a 2 week event? Seems dumb.

The Olympics is two weeks, but the tennis itself is one week, similiar to a standard ATP event, just with a BO5 final.

All the withdrawals have led to some randoms getting in. World #278 Darain King from Barbados was in anyway due to regional representation. But guys like Moldovan Radu Albot (113) have got in at the last minute due to the WDs. Great honour for these players!

While the Ratiwatana brothers have got the call in the doubles and Rajeev Ram becomes an Olympian by replacing the Bryans.

We won't find out the mixed doubles list till the like a few days into the games. Rafa is playing Muguruza, Stan is not playing mixed.

Verdasco didn't qualify for the Olympics. There was at least 4 Spanish singles players ahead of him. and he has no doubles ranking of note either.

Gasquet withdrew due to injury. So it was either Monfils or Paire to play doubles with Jo.

I am siding with Novak for singles and Tecau&Mergea for doubles.
Someone new for women singles and Williams sisters for doubles.
Should be a good event,a little bit more "spice" if Nadal plays singles too :)

Big shame Wawrinka isn't playing mixed. Why isn't he? Really sad for Hingis that she's by far the best doubles player, there's top 10 males and females and she doesn't get to play Olympics it seems.
Also thought Bertens and Rojer would play mixed.
Who's playing mixed for 'Murica?

Totally shipping Spain for mixed gold. Will be fascinating.

I believe this refers to events, he will play the Olympics, just not sure what.

--
Rafael Nadal has conceded he is not yet sure that he will be able to represent Spain at the Rio Olympics as his fitness concerns linger.

The 2008 gold medalist withdrew from the French Open with a wrist injury and missed Wimbledon.

"I will not be at the best level in any of the categories," Nadal told journalists after arriving in Brazil on Sunday. "I have not competed for two months and I have not trained a lot."

"I will train a few days here to see what I can do and then decide what is best, to be more positive for me and the team," he said.

Nadal's Spanish team mate David Ferrer acknowledged last week that the 14-time grand slam champion's fitness situation was "delicate".

World number five Nadal, who is due to be Spain's flag bearer, was absent from the 2012 Olympics due to injury and should he withdraw, it would come as a significant blow for tennis at the Games with several other high-profile player also missing.

Roger Federer sits out due to a knee problem and Wimbledon finalist Milos Raonic withdrew citing fears over the Zika virus.

------
Then again Nadal always does this. If he is not fit I would hope he isn't selfish enough to compete. However lets be honest he is gold medal favourite in the mixed after Fed Hingis WD. That 16 team draw makes for an exho of a comp with medals being handed out at the end.

Are you a socialist?

In sports yes but only when I am neutral . If I support a particular player I am happy for them to get the glory. But if there is a Bronze medal match between Murray and Goffin, I am rooting for Goffin big time, I want him to have that special moment, whereas what does a bronze do for Murray,

But I of course apprecita domination and greatness, I grew up a Federer fan.

In real life, yes I am left wing. What about you?

As I said above, the mixed teams aren't published yet lol. Stan said he won't play and Rafa said they are. Hingis will played the Womens doubles with Bacsinszky but yes will now not play Mixed due to Fed's injury and Stan focusing on sigles. Stan and Hingis would have been medal favourites.

Now the Bryans have WD that rules out another good potential pair. A Bryan with Mattek-Sands

This makes me love the Olympics in tennis. Not only the singles per se, but where do you get such doubles and mixed doubles line ups?

Yeah, I remember how jam packed it was 4 years ago in London, and that quick turnaround time from Wimbledon to SW19 again.

Love the Olympics. Think we might get some funny results to be honest, at least hopefully not the Serena-Djoker procession that a lot will expect. Like someone said earlier, watching doubles/mixed is never more fun than it is in the Olympics imo.

Funny considering he played the ATP500 Rio Open in February in Rio... And the Olympics would be far safer as they've taken far more precautions for Zika. Probably more concerned about no points and no money but oh well, it's not like he would've won a medal.

How has the Olympics taken more precautions vs. Zika? Have they made a scientific discovery in the last week?

Got to say, I'm disappointed that I will not be able to watch Federer/Hingis play mixed doubles. I would think they would make a hell of a team.

Why aren't any points being awarded for the Olympics this time? Didn't Murray get 600+ points when he won in 2012?

Curious about this too. Kinda makes sense if you consider that other appearances on behalf of one's country (Davis Cup, Fed Cup, etc.) don't result in points awards either, but still, would've been nice if they'd done it.

Also, I simply can't wait for Rio. So beyond excited.

Apparently , conditions in Olympic village are horrid. I hope all tennis players brave enough to go will stay safe.

See my answer to Skyline. Murray got 750 ranking points in 2012.

The thing is that ranking points used to be awarded for DC too but that has also stopped. Seems there is no longer any agreement between the ATP and the ITF to award ranking points for any non-ATP event other than the Slams.
