Just watched replay of Nishikori match and both players looked so good even though Ninja went up 3-0, but then an unexpected MTO. Out of the MTO Nishikori's low back/hip looked to be an issue and it got really bad. Actually held serve to get it to 4-0. Then it was 4-3 and Ninja through in the towel on his own serve after winning a point to get to 15-30.

Not aware of Ninja having back/hip issues before so this may be his worst injury yet.:(

Up next is the worm, if Nicky starts making sly comments about the worms women it could take a while to get through them.
Doubt the worm will be an issue. Kyrgios actually wants the worm as his coach, but the worm intends to break Connors record as oldest player on tour to win match. This match is a chance for Kyrgios to prove himself a worthy charge and a nice drubbing might actually change Stepanek's thoughts about playing and coaching.

Meanwhile Kyrgios is suddenly alive for WTF. He and Pouille are effectively 12th and 13th in the race. The draw really opening up in Japan with Berdy and Ninja out, and Berdy has failed to make a move. Kyrgios can take matters into his own hands by stopping Monfils in a potential SF. Both Pouille and Kyrgios need to win an ATP 1000 to get into contention and wins for both would be a great start (Pouille at China Open.)

With Berdy out Thiem can breathe easier too. Thiem, Nadal, and Monfils are very close in the race at 6, 7, and 8 and need to do well to keep Berdy, Cilic, and the two young GOATs at bay. Thiem is out at Shanghai, but should gain 160 points for the week as his Chengdu final can now be put in place of Shanghai by the ranking rules.

Goffin too is in with a shot and with Nishikori out he's got a good chance to pick up a lot of points this week.

Sigh....how often can Nishikori go without sustaining an injury of some kind? Seems his lack of fitness is always going to be a serious drawback for him!

Watching Goffin vs. Vesely replay and Jiri actually broke and consolidated for a 4-2 lead and had Goffin at 0-30, and then 15-40, but did not break (Goffin moved him and got some UEs). Vesely then was 4-3, 30-0 on his own serve and then some nice pressure by Goffin and 2 DFs and it was 4 all. Vesely made a go at breaking, but after some deuces Goffin held. Vesely held easy and then had BP at 5 all, but hit a short lob off of a good approach. Jiri saved 4 match points on his own serve, but Goffin felled him in the end. 6-3, 7-5

Goffin is in the driver's seat in the top half of the draw. He's beaten Cilic twice this year already.

Looks like Ninja's got back problems now like Andy did. Looks much more serious than his other niggling injuries.

...Thiem is out at Shanghai, but should gain 160 points for the week as his Chengdu final can now be put in place of Shanghai by the ranking rules...

I don't think Thiem is eligible for a reduction of his Masters 1000 commitment tournaments.
The ATP Rulebook:
¤¤ 1.08 Reduction of ATP World Tour Masters 1000 Commitment
A. A player’s number of ATP World Tour Masters 1000 commitment tournaments shall be reduced by one (1) tournament for reaching each of the following milestones:
1) 600 matches (as of 1 January of the commitment year);
2) 12 years of service;
3) 30 years of age (as of 1 January of the commitment year).¤¤

So if eligible, but injured they must play or lose points? If player is not eligible, the points are substituted.

...You are correct. Those are exceptions to this general rule:
"Once a player is accepted in the main draw of one of these twelve (12) tournaments, as a direct acceptance, a qualifier, a special exempt or a lucky loser, or having accepted a wild card, his result in this tournament shall count for his ranking, whether or not he participates."

So Thiem will now be the one everyone is chasing with Nadal and Monfils likely to distance themselves from Thiem.

Berdy was a bit hampered today with some kind of hip issue. Noticed it a bit in previous matches, but during the breadstick Berdy had MTO. Berdy's bid to make WTF looking shakey, but this doesn't look bad enough to stop Berdy from playing Shanghai.

I know. I'm losing my hope in him. What a faqing disappointment

If a payer is eligible for a reduction of his Masters 1000 commitment tournaments, the points are substituted. [Instead of getting 'zero' points.]
The ATP Rulebook, page 196:
¤¤ NOTE: A player who is eligible for a reduction of his ATP World Tour Masters 1000 commitment tournaments per Section 1.08 who withdraws prior to the withdrawal deadline and uses his exemption may have the number of his results from all other eligible tournaments in the ranking period, that count for his ranking, increased by one (1) for each milestone reached with a maximum of three (3).¤¤

Thiem should get 'zero' points for the Shanghai Masters.

Thiem? He's OK. The injuries aren't allowing him to get into top form. Zverev is playing extremely well and Thiem took a set, so hopefully Thiem somehow limps into WTF and recovers enough form to be worthy of the honor. Having Zverev, Pouille, and Kyrgios tearing it up is going to help Thiem make it in as players like Cilic, Goffin, Berydych, and Monfils get to deal with the NextGen spearhead into the top ten. (Khachanov just made it into qualifying for Shanghai too.)

The word on Thiem and Shanghai is he is out for the Flu, so things may not be as bad as they look.

Baggy holds for 1-1. His 1st serve % for the year is 51. Muller looked to attack the 2nd serve in his 1st return game, and transition to the net.

LOL, Muller's racquet slips out of his hands whilst serving.

30-30, a couple of DFs included. Muller holds on. 2-1. Wicked swerve on some of these serves....

Baghdatis and Muller coming onto court now.
Mildly interesting match given that Muller has never beaten Baghdatis. Muller has won 52.0% of his hard court points coming into the US Open. Baghy is at 50.4% so without the head to head, this would favor Muller strongly. Muller may squeek out his first win over Baghy today; very hard match to call.

I think Muller comes through this one.

I"m not very confident. Muller has one of the worst return games on the good side of a Servebot. If Baghs breaks him in a set he's probably toast. Baghs is so smart.
If he keeps up his return game as of now, he has more than decent chance. Getting a hold on quite a few. Not to mention the amount of 2nd serves Muller is getting.

Muller has 2 BPs here...
And Muller breaks. Quite a poor game from Baggy there.

Muller might have the best slice serve on tour. Being a lefty obviously helps, but he gets a lot of pace on them also. Brilliant hold for 5-2. Amazing pick up with the half volley.

Yeah and that was a 2nd serve; rather disgusting.

So do I try to fall asleep and wake up for Pouille vs Dimi or do I hope Muller makes mince meat of Baghy and watch Simon school the Guru?

Baggy changing tactics here. Serve and volley 3 points in a row. Could mean a number of things. Not feeling 100%, semi tank, give Muller different looks, etc...

Wake up for Pouille vs Dimi. I can't concentrate that well on a match whilst sleep deprived, as with most people.

Love 30 here on Muller's serve, after a couple of errors.

30-30, with two unplayable 1st serves. What a shot from Muller! Backhand right dtl in the left baseline corner. SP. Ace, and he has the 1st set.

Dominant on 1st serve, with 100% won. Good numbers at the net.

If Muller plows through I'll watch Simon with you. I can watch a replay of Pouille and just stay off TTW. Simon won't be around forever.

Baghs has a horror of a first return game on hard courts this year. Don't believe he won one first return point in the opening set.

Forehand from Muller has been excellent this match. Somewhat thanks to the serve of Muller, getting quite a few short balls. But he's dictating pretty much every point, and is spreading the court nicely.
