Goffin holds in a fairly intense game with one great point where Cilic short crosscourt slice catches net and Goffin can't do enough with the shot. 5 all
 
Goffin lights up another 2nd serve and hits backhand winner off Cilic's first shot. Goffin serving for set.:D
 
Goffin is such and champ and can be very clutch. What a great comeback to take the set after the umpire BP fiasco and drug cheat acceptance of replay of point.
 
Goffin needs to keep this play up and has a fine chance to win this event. He's got Delpo first round in Shanghai so straight sets would be nice.

Great match. Its clear why Goffin leads the head to head 2-0; he just hits the Cilic ball well and his movement balances out the Cilic power. Goffin catching the ball early and taking enough time from Cilic that he can't pull off winners at will. Goffin can get Cilic on the defensive quickly if Cilic does not slam the balls back.
 
Goffin is short and feeds of the low bouncing flat Cilic shots
DelPo is a similar player just more patient than Cilic
Goffins game is Ferrer like but much better Backhand and variety

Ferrer has been the better player, but Goffin is much better to watch when he is in form. This match is a real pleasure. Delpo would sure be serving a lot more first serves in than Cilic.

Congrats to Nick on winning his 3rd title and 1st at 500 level. As inconsistent and erratic as he is, it's easy to see what potential he has if only he can knuckle down to it more often!

Congrats also to Goffin on making the final much closer than I anticipated. He was just 2 points away from taking the title in that decider!

A few people in the match thread, but really most TTWers tend to be big 4 watchers and really big 3.

Not me. I pay as much attention to any of the younger guys who may eventually move up. But the guys in their mid 20s for the most part just tire me out watching. For instance, the moment Dimitrov dropped the first game to Murray today I figured it was over. For just a moment there was hope when he broke back in the 2nd set, but the TB was one-way traffic.

Some of these guys may end up as place-holders when they Big Four finally fade all the way, but it will be hard to get excited about players closer to 30 than 20 who finally win things because the former greats are gone. And most of these guys look like clones. Goffin was fun to watch, but what is so different about his game from Murray and Djokovic? Whereas watching Kyrgios was fun. He looks different. And I think we will see more players like him in the future.

Part of it may be that the really young players grew up with the new strings, and they exploit them differently.I don't think what Kyrgios does is remotely possible with older technology. His strokes just look different. Young players are using way more wrist, which may turn out to be a dead-end - or not. We don't know yet.

Other young guns don't look at all different to me. Coric, for instance, just looks like other, older 2HBH grinders. Thiem less so. But I probably pay more attention to the youngest players, not the oldest ones.

Much more interesting picking and watching the up and comers develop. Goffin was a great foil to Kyrgios in this match and his tennis against Cilic and Kyrgios was sublime. Goffin, Dimitrov, and Raonic are still 25. (Monfils has been cool to watch in his peak year, 2016) I'd much rather watch them develop into their roles on tour then watch most of the much older players who are starting to come out of their prime period and decline. The lost generation is a great test for the newbies.

You are right about Kyrgios and Poly. I'd say Kyrgios and Thiem are game born and bred on Poly. Kyrgios is pure box office and has big 4 appeal in his game. Federer might be the only big 4 player I like to watch that is close to Kyrgios. Murray, Djokovic, and Nadal's now anemic game are not as fun to watch. Kyrgios and his whippy Poly shots when he's clicking are a thing to be seen and great for the sport.

Kyrgios and Thiem may end up as dead ends, but lets hope not.
 
If you can't figure out the difference between how Murray plays and how Goffin plays you don't watch enough tennis

There was a post complaining about Murray playing the same as Goffin. But now that's two weeks ago and I'm not sure I had multiple tabs open and made it in the wrong thread

Murray comments in this one. They are different enough and Goffin in his recent form at least makes for an entertaining match with Murray even if the match is a foregone conclusion. Many complain about baseliners, but I like matches like Djkovic vs RBA.:D
