2016 RG SF: Hypothetical Change

Murray won and then lost to Djokovic in 4 sets in the Finals. This sealed the Nole Slam. Had Wawrinka won the SF, would the outcome in the Finals have been different? Would Djokovic had been denied his 4th consecutive slam and 1st career slam?

It's possible. When there is smoke their is fire. The 2015 final was convincing defeat.

Would it have been better in the long run had he lost the 2016 RG? Seemed he lost motivation afterwards and was in a wilderness before 2018 Wimbledon.

Nole had physical troubles as well. He lost in mc. He lost to Andy Murray in Rome. By this time his body was still holding on but clearly downhill

Wawrinka poses a very different challenge to Murray, particularly in BO5 on clay. His weight of shot and ability to maintain intensity for multiple quality sets in a row is generally quite a bit better than Murray's against Djokovic. It's a hard match to call. I feel like 2016 was just Novak's time and he would have found a way against the 2016 version of Wawrinka.

I certainly would've liked his chances better than Murray.

But Stan was such a fluky player that you never know what you're going to get from him. Maybe the juice of being in a final would've brought out the best in him against Novak, but probably not.

Wawrinka is not the most consistent guy around, he would have a hard time repeating the 2015 performance.
