Four top seeded players went out today in the 3rd round: Federer, Wawrinka, Berdych and Ferrer. But what the heck happened to Berdych: a double bagel???

How the heck did Berdych get double-bagelled? Was Goffin really THAT good or was something the matter with Tomas? Surely the latter.

Anyone see the match to offer any explanations?

Berdy was a mess in terms of movement, but Goffin was also GOATing off the ground, hitting winners for fun.

Based on the 15 minutes I tuned in Goffin was very good while Berdych just couldn't make any damage to his game. Berdych's level has finally been exposed.

So do you think Goffin was playing well enough to trouble Murray, if he can maintain this sort of form? Murray will obviously move and defend better than did Berdych.

I think Goffin got pushed to be more agressive than usual playing a big hitter like Berdych. When playing Murray who is less consistently agressive he will probably end up pulling back which would be a mistake.

I think Goffin could push Murray hard in one set, but Murray has a gear that eludes Berd-Brain and is in very good form himself.

Personally, I doubt it. However, if Goffin is ever gonna trouble Murray, it's tomorrow.

I'm not so sure that it's a choice, so much as a necessary response to what his opponent gives him. Goffin isn't very tall or strong, so he can't generate much power. But he's got good timing, so he can use the power of a big hitter like Berdych. If Murray doesn't give him that kind of pace, I'm not sure he can generate it himself.

Good opportunity for him, though. Murray isn't Djokovic/Nadal on clay, and the semi-final opponent is as easy as he's ever likely to get in a masters semi.

You are right which is probably why Goffin struggles against Nishikori too (Kei does hit quite hard at times but mostly only when pulling the trigger on the point, he doesnt give that pace consistently or predictably).

I think if they play Murray will pull out a tough 3 set win somehow.

Is that the same Djokovic who almost got his arse handed to him today?

Bellucci has a more consistent forehand then Murray on slow clay, more weapons in general.

Credit to Murray, who is serving out of his mind, but Rome is probably his worst surface to play on the tour.

Its hard to say right now, but clay is not Goffin's strongest surface. The head to head with Berdych was very lopsided too, and of course factor in some decline, but still Goffin may be more dangerous in this kind of form even with the previous Murray matches against him. Coming into Rome Murray has won 52.4% of his points on clay and Goffin 51.0%. I'd think Murray will win this in 2 sets despite the Goffin momentum.

Bellucci has more consistent NADA than Murray. Bellucci and consistency just doesn't go together.

Back Berdych to edge out Goffin in three in Rome
Eighth seed Tomas Berdych faces twelfth seed David Goffin in the third round of the Rome Open priced as bet365’s 1/2 favourite to progress.

In many respects these odds look short.

After all, Goffin’s second round defeat of Jack Sock marked the occasion of his 23rdvictory in 32 matches in 2016; the Belgian is W5-L3 on clay and followed up a last 16 berth at the Australian Open in January with consecutive Masters semi-finalappearances at Indian Wells and Miami across March and April.

Indeed, Goffin has been on consistently strong form for two seasons now. The Belgian won 38 of the 63 matches that he played in 2015 and 69 of the 90 matches that he played in 2014 and this form has catapulted the Belgian from world No.111 on 1 January, 2014, to the top-15 by the end of last season.

It also has to be acknowledged that Goffin has featured in five ATP Tour level finalsover the past two years, winning twice at Kitzbuhel and Metz in 2014.

Still, he did lose his second match in succession against Berdych in the quarter-final of the Marseille Open in February, affording the Czech at 2-0 head to head advantage, and Berdych comes into this match on strong form.

The 30-year-old is 19-9 for the season; he has reached two quarter-finals and two semi-finals in his last five starts in Rome and has reached two semi-finals and four quarter-finals in seven ATP Tour starts in 2016.

    Tip

Berdych possess a clear edge on Goffin on clay and I see the Czech progressing; however, the fact that four of Goffin’s last five matches have gone the distance makes backing Berdych to win in three appeal as a 3/1 shot. A tie-break trades 6/5.

I was watching the lives scores on the internet while at work. I saw both Djokovic and Berdych getting bageled and figured that there must be some flu going thru the locker room and they were both hit by it.

LOL Berdych. Retire and go make babies with the supermodel. For the love of the sport DO NOT teach any kids that goofy Eastern Euro serve toss to the stars...

He has his own Ester, remember?
The only thing that can distract Suresh from giving Berdych another bagel is a spectator eating a sandwich behind Tomas.
