Nishikori may well continue to beat Cilic 7-8/10 times...but, it's where you win those matches that counts. In that sense it makes for interesting matchup between these two, although very frustrating for Kei.

Haha that is the only reason i remember it as well as i do. I still think Cilic would of won that match despite what happened. The incident happened literally on break point and thats WHY he kicked the umpire. I mean obviously you never know but i choose to believe Cilic would of won that second set and gone on to win the whole thing either way.

Cilic won Queens in 2012 when it was still a 250 level event* (albeit far more prestigious than any other at that level). He won by default because his opponent Nalbandian got defaulted in the 2nd set after kicking the wooden hoarding around a seated linesman which then shattered and cut the linesman's leg causing it to bleed. Cilic had been a set down but got to break point on Nalbandian's serve at 4-3 in the 2nd which provoked the kicking incident.

* Queens was raised to a 500 level event in 2015 along with Halle.

He has now won a title at all levels (1 Slam, 1 Masters, 1 at 500, 13 at 250). Basel is his 16th title overall.

2016 has proved to be his highest achieving season (1 Masters, 1 ATP500) since 2014 when he won his Slam title at the US Open beating Nishikori in the final there too.

Not really. He is missing a WTF title.
 
Did not see the match. Quite disappointed with the result though. Cilic seems to be finding the touch lately beating Murray,
now Nishi and almost beating Fedr at Wimby. He's also in contention to save the people from Berdych.

Hmmm...don't you think the fact that Cilic also has a Slam and a Masters title to Fognini's zilch kind of over compensates for losing the 500 race to him? :cool:;)
 
Unfortunately, it seems we have seen the best of Nishikori. Which is a shame really.

What's with Cilic winning all Federer's pet tournaments? First, the real slam, now Basel.:eek:

Yet some posters on this forum think Nishikori will be a #1 player! He can't even win a 500 event where there are no Big Four players but he's going to be a future #1? :rolleyes: Plus he can't stay injury free.

Now he needs to break that mental block and figure out how to be Djokovic. Nishikori is Djokovic light (although obviously nowhere near as good as Djokovic) and Cilic handles Nishikori pretty well. There is really no reason a guy like Cilic with his big game can't also beat Djokovic. He's got a complete mental block vs Djokovic and loses the match in his head before he steps on court to some degree.
