Very impressed with Kei this entire week, not just this match alone. Can't say the same for Thiem
If Kei avoids injuries he has an actual chance to fight for number 1 in 2017 ... IMO. He is really incredible when on fire and a Slam win should give him the needed confidence to reach his potential.
If you said 2018 I might agree
Would be so incredible for a player without a true weapon of a serve to reach the pinnacle in today's game.Consider it, this year(outside the 250) Kei lost only twise to players outside top 10 - Gasquet at the French(Richard was pretty much top 10) and Tomic at Cincinnati which was after the Olympics. His other losses came to Djokovic(5), Nadal(2), Murray 2, Wawrinka 1. He has the consistency just needs that extra bit of gear to make the next step(outside of injuries offcource) and IMO the margins are incredibly small at the very top. Just look at Kerber, before 2016 the difference between her and the top 3 was bigger than the one between Nishikori and the mens top 3.
Wawrinka had a similar building season in 2013 before reaching his highs from 2014 onwards !

Del Potro is not at that stage where he can just pick his battles. He needs to do well at every event, regardless how small it is, in order to improve his ranking.
Basel is faster due to altitude. I think this is why Wawa never does much at Basel and why Zverev's new found net game payed dividents (he did well on Shanghai which is the fastest surface too.) Wawrinka wanted to win Basel very badly. Received a point penalty in the match after incinerating a racket. You can't be serious? He's injured almost every other week. How's he going to be #1? You're going off his performance in his match vs Del Potro in freaking Basel? As I said above, I would be unsure if Del Potro would give his absolute all to try and win Basel and it appears from his match vs Nishikori that he didn't. Unless you're a player like Federer or Nadal who seem to give 100% in all tournaments, most other top players pick and choose their battles and there's no way Basel is at the top of that battle list. No way. Ask Wawrinka who just lost to M. Zverev for Pete's sake!![]()

Are you serious? Effort? Everything you have said is speculation. Are you Delpo? Only Del Potro himself knows how much effort he gives in every tournament. You act as if Delpo decided to tank the match even before he got on court. They are professionals, the best in the business. Are you suggesting that every tournament players enter they consciously tell themselves : alright we will put in a 50% effort and see how everything goes. Maybe Krygios, but 99% of the tour dosen't do that. Don't use a hypothesis like players effort to make an argument when you aren't the player yourself, heck you don't even personally know the player how can you suggest something that is so innate about a player? Effort? Seriously?
I suppose everytime an upset happens we can just chalk that up to effort then? Wouldn't that make things easier.![]()

If you saw the Nishikori match you'd see the reason for excitement. Del Potro may well have been tired after winning Stockholm last week, but he did pretty well at the Olympics. He might have been off, but Nishikori took him off his game. The look on Delpo's face, midway in the first set when he failed to break Ninja with one of his trademark forehands; Ninja somehow redirected the mighty blow and the spinny shot improbably caught the sideline very short into the court with some angle. He was tougher than Delpo and that's impressive.
You are right. It would take a miracle for Nishikori to make number one, but he's cemented himself as one of the top players with a fine year in 2016.
But Del Potro also didn't look to me like he was at 100%.
How exactly you decide if someone is fit or not? Del Potro straight setted all of his opponents in Stockholm-Basel till Nishikori. His schedule was far more action packed at the Olympics/US Open and yet he managed to give his best but somehow now he is unfit when playing indoors against easier opponents for lesser time?!
Djokovic is the main reason that Nishikori doesn't fight for the number 1 spot as for now. Outside the serb his record against the rest of top 16 for 2016 is 10-4. Look at Wawrinka before his 28th birthday, had only 1 master final+ 2 Slam QF. Nishikori right now is 26 with 5x the achievements that Stan had and with aging Nole/Murray around and with only Thiem/Zverev being somehow expected to challenge the top spot in the coming years. Unless Djokovic-Murray keep their domination till they are 33-34 Nishikori is the most likely to take the top spot from them.
Give him timeDel potro only cares about 'M'250s![]()
Agreed and glad you got to see the Delpo match. At least you see the basis for the enthusiasm though your skepticism is 200% justified. Ninja is at Bercy with a quite manageable draw. Prospect Murray SF. We don't need to wait for WTF.Wawrinka never does much anywhere unless it's a slam final especially if he's playing Djokovic.
I did see some of the Del Potro-Nishikori match and I agree that Nishikori played very well. But Del Potro also didn't look to me like he was at 100%.
Let's see how Nishikori does vs Murray and Djokovic at the WTF! People talk a lot about Nishikori and I think he's got a great game to watch when he is "on" and isn't injured or looking dejected. My problem with him is that he is injured much too much and that he has trouble beating players like Djokovic and Murray on the biggest stages. Basel is one thing, Masters 1000s and especially the WTF and slams are another. I just can't see Nishikori at #1 given his past injury pattern.
