Lukas is tired emotionally and physically, and it's leading him to be a bit impatient. He's really making a whole lot of the same kind of errors as Grigolo did yesterday — although the kind Guru isn't punishing him quite as hard for it.

Gurufils in control — of the match, tournament and the tennis landscape as such.

Big serve and big return. SuperMonfils in da house. P being gently reminded he's # 25. Just hope serious M mode lasts.

Pouille takes the returned ball on service lets and uses it again for his serve. Djokovic does the same. A very sympathetic thing to do, in my opinion :)

Biggest difference by far between the Guru and current Nadal is depth. Guru not allowing Lukas to find the angles and be aggressive quite as often. Makes Pouille rush a bit more.

But also the fact Pouille has an extra 5-setter on his legs. If he was facing a fresh Nadal now he would probably have a hard time too.

LOL,,,superior version of monfils ?? monfils would have beaten rafa in 3 easy sets with that wrist injury. Poille got lucky and played injured RAFA

LOL yeah right poor rusty Bull with bad knees apendicitis and bad wrist :-o

wonder how he can hit tweeners and play gruelling 4h 5 setter with such a bad wrist "injury"

Monfils also has a big serve. P cannot stomp all over it with his cute net play. That's what did Nadal in too. Lack of a big serve. Makes a big difference on fast hard. Regardless, no excuse for getting THAT crushed in 1st set by a journeyman type needing 5 vs (who?) Chiudinelli

Yes, surely that has an effect as well — q.v. poast #113

Absolutely. Gael's bigger delivery on both serves is also giving him another advantage.

I realize they are closing the roof now, but what is the point of even discussing? It closes in 5 minutes. When the rain comes, close it.

They give it their all and win against Nadal, show up flat for their next round match... it's the same story for all of them with but a few exceptions. Typical

Pouille played three 5 setters in a row. Monfils lost zero sets.

Doesn't the fact that Monfils didn't drop a set, whereas Pouille dropped seven, suggest that Monfils is indeed the better player, at the moment at least? It's not that he just happens to be the lucky beneficiary of tiredness. It's that he's breezed through, whereas his opponent has struggled.

(Sure, Pouille played Nadal. But he also dropped the opening two sets against Chiudinelli and was pretty much outplayed for most of the first three and a half sets against Bautista Agut).

his appendix has been taken out and poses no more trouble but that wrist is only 80% right now, and that is enough to hamper anyone,,,,RAFA's topspin was only measure at about 2800 RPM at the US open this year, it is normally 3500-3800 RPM's. If that isn't a proof enough ,,,,,,don't know what is..........No wonder Pouille won

again, ZERO drama so far in this match. The Nadal/Pouille match seems to have drained everyone. I'm hoping Lucas can at least win a set.

Can hardly blame the kid for being a bit flat after 19 sets in four rounds.

Still, some of it is that Gaël isn't allowing Lukas to hit as many amazing shots: not handing out many spinny balls inside the service box, and not giving up as much open court for Lukas to hit into. I think Monfils is perhaps playing better tennis than anyone not named Murray or Djovak right now.

I will never be comfortable watching young boys holding umbrellas over grown up men.
Some of that indentured servant stuff is cringeworthy. I know some people claim it's a dream for them to be near the players, yadda yadda... But they are treated like dogs. Murray accidentally dropped his water bottle yesterday, and it rolled about two feet away from him... which elicited angry gestures to a cabana boy to go fetch.

Don’t forget how irrelevant Nadal is these days. They don’t play against the man who won 14 Slams anymore. In the past Nadal made his opponents look bad, but now it’s the opposite. It’s very well possible that today’s performance would also be enough for Pouille to beat this declined Nadal on hardcourt.

ahhh . . . the louis armstrong RIP.

has anyone seen the new louis armstrong stadium? it looks ugly as *^!@*%$%&.
